Scam Alert - Insurance Benefit Information

"State Regulated Program To Pay Your Final Expenses" - Not What It Seems

LABELLE, FL. -- Florida residents are now receiving letters from Durant, OK advising "2013 New Special Benefits Update." What looks like a notice to advertise some type of special state benefit program is only a disguise to get your personal information in order to sell you burial insurance.

Inside the white envelope is a green card saying the recipient "may qualify for a state regulated program to pay for your final expenses..."  The card continues saying if you qualify for this benefit it will pay up to 100% of all funeral expenses.

But be aware the mailing from Benefits Processing Center in Durant, OK is actually a way to get your personal information, including your signature and age of yourself and your spouse along with your phone number.

If you send the info, be prepared to receive phone calls from sales people trying to sell you death insurance, sometimes called funeral insurance. One of the most expensive types of insurance, this outfit does not indicate on the mailing that it's actually trying to get your information in order to sell you an insurance policy.

They can mention "a state regulated program" on the mailing because all insurance companies selling policies in Florida are regulated by the Florida Insurance Commissioner's office.

But consumers should know this company is not offering any kind of program operated by the state, contrary to what they may lead you to believe.

The real clue is the disclaimer at the bottom of the mailing in small print "Not Affiliated With Any Government Agency."

Advice: If you want to purchase burial insurance contact your regular local insurance agent. Always compare costs and benefits with several companies before purchasing. Don't give out personal information blindly by mail or phone.

My Mom received a notice from Benefits Information Processing, Marietta, GA and the note enclosed indicated "2015 Benefit Information for West Virginia Citizens Only". Therefore, based on all other complaints, this company is being fraudulent by saying "for WV Citizens Only". My Mom asked me to google this company and I'm glad people have recognized this company as fraudulent, therefore, you saved my Mom from revealing her personal information. thanks you all very much

Hi, (We're in New Jersey.)A man came to my front door asking to speak to my 84 year old mother. I told him it wouldn't be necessary; I handle everything. He had her name, birthdate and address, but not her social security number. Also mentioned a Walmart gift. I believe this originates from one of their connections working in the credit card division of Walmart. Anyway who does door to door anymore for insurance. Also since when is a gift card offered for a store for insurance. These caused my atneas to go up.

I just got one from Senior Benefits Dept. out of Marietta, GA, for "Connecticut Citizens Only". Nice of you to warn us of the scam, but what do we do about it? Forward the cards to the post office? The FBI? Is anyone actually doing anything to catch and punish these criminals? I know the government is spending a ton of our tax dollars on the useless war on drugs as well as the futile attempt to stop kids from sharing mp3s, so who's working on shutting down these idjits? My elderly mom would have been exactly the type to fall for this hook, line & sinker, god rest her soul. She was getting 2 large bags full of junk mail a day just like this before she passed.

Thank God my instincts were still working and something was posted warning seniors to beware. My Senior Benefits Dept. from Marietta, GA is going in the trash where it belongs. I just recieved a VERY official looking letter from Senior Benefits Dept. (they had to abbreviate) Stamped on the front is "SECOND NOTICE/TIME SENSITIVE" from PO Box 4057 Marietta GA. And it also says "Important document enclosed" on the outside. Immediately, before even opening the thing I knew that it was some kind of scam.

But just to backup here, they do a chameleon act and make out like they are from some sort of account that you already have such as a government account. This angers me to no end.

Upon opening this letter I find very similar information about what you are entitled to and the information they requested was shocking. They wanted:
    MY SIGNATURE.
    MY DATE OF BIRTH.
    MY HOME ADDRESS (????)
MY SPOUSES NAME, DATE OF BIRTH.
    MY PHONE NUMBER.
    AND MY EMAIL ADDRESS.

Please tell anyone and everyone you know about this. And report them to whomever might be an official. This should be illegal. It is just official enough that a lot of people might fill it out worrying that they are missing something . . .

Ok, calm down people, this isn't a scam, it's just a marketing campaign. They are just trying to sell you the same life insurance that your local agent would try to sell you. If you're not interested, just don't send it in, if you mail it in your saying "yes, I'd like you to talk to me about some life insurance". It's not a crime, it's just marketing.

Any time you rationalize your behavior by saying something akin to "It's only business" – you're doing something wrong.

If you can't talk to your "consumers" as people – as you would speak to your mother, your father, sister, brother, friend, or acquaintance – then you've failed as a human being.

And, sorry – as long as there is intentional misdirection – it's a scam. There can be real clients. There can be real products. It doesn't matter. When you employ intentionally misleading tactics – you are trying to pull the wool over people's eyes. Scam.

  51. Hailing from East TN, just received "time sensitive" and "second request" or some such nonsense. It's a notice from "Senior Benefits Dept." with very vague claims about Medicare benefits, trying to look and sound like something officially from the government. First glaring, screaming clue that it's a scam is that there is no website. Second glaring clue is that, oh by the way, we do life insurance, too. Third clue is that nowhere do they say who they are or even what kind of company they are. I've never seen a company with the official name of "Blah Blah Dept." Fourth clue is the careful language that makes no offer or inducement of any kind, which technically keeps them out of trouble. So, anyway, I wrote on the notice/form the expanded version of FOAD and a threat to contact the attorneys general and insurance commissioners of both TN and GA if they ever send so much as a carrier pigeon in my direction.

  61. I have my postage paid return envelope attached to a very securely taped box. In the box they will find a weeks worth of german shepherd poop. And while I forgot to include the information required, the "glitter fairy" added a little surprise. Hope it brightens their day!

Now (8/11/2017) the scumbags are hitting us here in California- Got an envelope and card from Marietta GA but with no other information. That raised a red flag - so I googled & used their envelope to "recycle" my junk mail - nothing that had my identification on it - just random pages from a catalog, some cardboard, and a cut out picture & address/phone of a particularly odorous Senator. LOL

Just received one of many of these notices. I have received at least 3 or 4 of them. It reads New 2018 Benefit Notice For Pa Citizens Only. Since I have worked in a District Office for a Pa. State Representative for 17 years I went online to check this out. As a, now, retired senior it sounded good to be true. Thank goodness I did. Is there any way too put a stop to this? Hopefully, people will not be hurt by this.

My neighbour and I just received "2018 Benefit Information for Oregon Citizens Only" asking for name, address, phone, age, spouse's name and age. Very fine print at bottom "Not affiliated with or endorsed by any government authority". Code in bottom right corner: DE-76-OR. Return postage-free business envelope: Direct Processing Center, POB 4453, Boise, ID 83711-9977. Postmark on envelope: zip 83709 [Boise ID], code 0801 1053365 "Standard Auto Data-Pac". Markings on envelope: "Second Notice - Time Sensitive - Important Document Enclosed" "2018 Benefit Information For State Residents Only" "Personal and Confidential - to be opened by addressee only". No return address, no institutional identification of any kind, no phone number, email address, or website.

As others have noted, this is at best data mining, at worst a way to target those who return the card with advertising for funeral/death insurance and who can say what else.

Just seal the empty return envelope and mail back to them. No need to enclose the notice with your name on it. At least they will have to pay the pennies for postage.

It is sad that people trying to help are doing harm. The individuals who receive the filled out card are licensed professionals. The average cost of a funeral is $8000 to $12000. If you wanted to go the cremation way it is $700 - $3000. Purchasing a policy that relieves your loved ones, normally children that are grieving with the death of their parents sends a strong message. It says from birth until death I took care of everything. Don't worry, you don't have to find the funds or ask the church because I purchased a policy that left $xXxX so you don't have to worry. Definitley not a scam. All individuals that sell Life Insurance adhere to strict state guidelines.

  81. Just received a similar card in today's mail. This one goes back to a Response Processing Center, PO Box in Indianapolis, IN. I am resident of KY.

Thanks for the heads-up about this scam.

  82. It's not a scam. If you're interested in burial insurance, then it's exactly what it is. They are licensed brokers and field underwriters in the state you're in. Nothing illegal about it. Broker (not a scary word) means they represent all of the insurance carriers you would be searching for anyways. They're actually doing you a favor by shopping quotes for you. If you go through one carrier, they are captive and can only offer you their product.

These cards are more beneficial to you. Sure, the excess amount of calls sucks, but that's the only downside to it.

The people contacting you have all of their credentials and can easily show you their completed, and continuing education. They are also LOCAL. They will be there if you need them for anything else.

Remember why you would have filled it out in the first place. To not burden your family with $5000 to $25,000 in funeral expenses.

Version received in Virginia, the mailing address for the return envelope is in Kennesaw GA and addressed to "Direct Mail Processing, LLC". All the other cues about this really being and attempt to grab your information for marketing are still there but instead of a phone number to opt out of future mailings a web site is now provided and a 9 digit code. If you call a number to have you removed from future mailings then the company might honor that request (they might not, how would you know?) but that only applies to that company. If they sell or share your information the receiving company isn't obligated by that opt-out request. Also, the nine digit code to enter on a web site would work the same way. By simply responding (whether via phone or web) you are verifying that a person opened the junk mail and read it and the name and/or address is correct. This will enable the marketer to flag this as a good prospect and be worth more when selling the information.

I also subscribe with the envelope stuffing tactic, business reply mail has weight limits and an envelope weighing more than one ounce will cost more in postage. The barcode along the bottom of the envelope on the front also earns the marketer a discount so if the machines at the post office cannot read it it will cost more. However, I don't know if the post office will charge more if the barcode is scribbled out so I think subtle alterations to make it invalid are a better idea.

Mine came to Alabama today from Processing Center, POB 2968, Thomasville, GA. Thanks to the person who said to look at the last line which says: "NOT AFFILIATED WITH OR ENDORSED BY THE U.S. GOVERNMENT, FEDERAL MEDICARE PROGRAM, NOR ANY STATE AGENCY. LIFE INSURANCE UNDERWRITTEN BY SENIOR LIFE INSURANCE COMPANY, THOMASVILLE GEORGIA.
This tells you everything you need to know about who this is any why.Frankly, I am tired of the TV adds ad nauseaum for SENIOR LIFE INSURANCE COMPANY.
