Volunteers Screen Students For Hearing Loss

LABELLE, FL. -- Kevin Long, RN-Senior Public Health Nurse-LaBelle Schools Liaison from the Florida Department of Health in Hendry County coordinated the annual audiology screenings for all Kindergarten, 1st, 3rd, and 6th grade students in LaBelle Schools recently.

Coordinating with LaBelle School Health Licensed Practitioner Nurses, the LaBelle High School Allied Health Academy also participated in completing the screenings and Nikki Yeager Retired RN also volunteered to assist.

Since there is a lack of audiology services in Hendry County Nurse Long contacted his daughter Angela Long who is a practicing audiologist. She works with the schools in Iowa. Her program is based in Clearlake and she works in the surrounding school districts. Angela remembered a fellow audiology classmate who works in Naples Florida. A contact was made and Dr. Doidge volunteered her services.

Students who had failed the initial screens were examined and evaluated by Dr. Doidge at the LaBelle schools.

Dr. Doidge is currently working with Nurse Long to provide free hearing aid fittings and head aids for those students who need them.
