For example, at the LaBelle United Way House important services are available such as food stamp applications and other food assistance, free tax preparation services, affordable healthcare applications, employment opportunities and emergency financial assistance. The house even acts as the local cold weather shelter.
There are currently 26 agencies registered to provide services at the LaBelle United Way House. The LaBelle United Way House also has United Way 211 24-hour helpline for referral to non-emergency health and human services providing food, housing, employment, child care and veterans’ services.
In recent months, the LaBelle United Way House has assisted many displaced families from Hurricane Irma. It has been a resource by providing a place for them to seek new employment opportunities, help with debris clean-up, as well as emergency financial assistance. All were available at one facility so that families and individuals didn’t have to travel far for assistance.
The agencies that provide services through the United Way House work together to see that both the immediate need that brings the person or family to the house, and longer term needs that can prevent future crises are available. The immediate need for food may allow the house staff to assist the family in finding employment, or other services that will help the family become more stable and self-sufficient.
In addition to the LaBelle United Way House, there are United Way Houses in Clewiston and Moore Haven. The Clewiston House is located in the Goodwill Thrift Store on Sugarland Hwy. It houses about 10-12 agencies each month, including Goodwill Joblink, The Salvation Army, and Early Learning Coalition. The Moore Haven United Way House, recently opening in June 2017, houses Hope Connections, Goodwill Joblink, and Catholic Charities, with many other agencies slated to begin providing services there in the future. Both of these houses are centrally located in the communities to provide easy access for residents seeking services.
