The Cayman Turtle Schooner - Florida Keys Watercolor Kapers

Florida Keys’ Watercolor Kapers by Bob Kranich

The Cayman Turtle Schooner, (Part 9, Excerpt 74)

This is a story, titled The Cayman Turtle Schooner. This story will tell about the forming and history of the Cayman Islands, the green sea turtle’s habits and life style, the building of a dugout canoe, and then a schooner, and lastly about the historic two-masted turtle schooner, A. M. Adams. A storm is just about to hit their island.

The Cayman Turtle Schooner

The wind was blowing in strong gusts. It felt like it would start raining. Then they saw a lightning flash far off over the island to the southeast. It was getting dark. Grandpa was fighting to keep the canoe on course. The sail was bellowing out. It was a good thing they had an outrigger to keep them from tipping.

“We’ll go right past our place and run into the lagoon!”

They turned and headed for the lagoon. The waves and water were up so high that they didn’t even have to worry about finding the channel. They literally flew right in with the waves and tide.

“Drop sail, Parker, and grab your paddle. We'll go to the back on our side of the lagoon. Head for that near tree. We’ll go up into the mangroves and tie up to them.”

They jumped out.

“Let’s go to the house!” Grandpa said, clutching the coffee and the sugar. “Run, Parker!”

As they ran towards the house the rain let loose with pelting torrents. They could hear the waves crashing on the beach.

Grandma was at the door. “I’ve put some things in the main stone part of the house, Hon. I’ve got a bag of food, a pot, and a jug of water ready, also a sack with some blankets.”

“Good. Thank you! Here’s some coffee and sugar. Secure and water-tight it. Wait for a minute, while Parker and I tie things down in the shed.”
Grandpa and Parker ran out to the shop. They threw the loose tools in a heavy metal chest. Back they ran to the house. The palm trees on the beach were bending and swaying with the wind gusts. Rain was pelting the metal roof of the house.
They ate some food Grandma had prepared. “I think it’s a small cyclone. If we survive to the lull we need to get to high ground. Parker and I have a cave about fifty feet above sea level half way up the bluff. When this wind changes and blows from the sea towards us, we’ll have a surge!”

Suddenly it became quiet. The rain stopped. “Now let’s go! We'll take the kerosene lantern. No running. Grandma behind me, and Parker stay close. Each of us gets a bag.”

Out the back of the house they went. It was pitch black, except for the yellow of the lantern. Down the trail, past the marsh, past the place where Parker met the crocodile, and then up the trail.

“Here it is. Parker, help me move these branches, rocks, and dirt.”

Just then the wind and rain started back up. Then all three crawled in.

Grandma said, “You always said you were going to take me to a fancy lodging some day. You sure know all the real fine places, Grandpa.”

They put their things out, spread the blankets, and turned out the lantern. Inside it was a little cool but dry.

Sebastian noticed there was a lot of movement of the water. When he came up to breathe the waves would throw him around the crawl. Sometimes they would throw him into the beach posts of the crawl. He also noticed it was raining. Shucks, rain didn't bother him, but he didn't like the up and down and being knocked about.

He held his breath and swam down to the bottom. It was only four feet deep, but with the tide and wind he now had water at times almost over the crawl posts. One of the times he was on top he saw a dark shape with a white flapping object shoot by. He had never seen it before but in the front was that human who had brought him sea grass. He couldn’t see it any more because it had gone to the rear of the lagoon.

He noticed the waves were becoming more violent and bigger as the time wore on. He came up for air and a tremendous wave raised him high up. It then came crashing down on the mangroves and trees at the edge of the lagoon. As fast as the first wave started to return to the lagoon a much bigger wave sent Sebastian high up and then sucked him up over the crawl posts and into the center of the lagoon. Sebastian immediately exhaled and did a rapid inhalation. He dived down, and down, paddling hard with all four of his flippers.

He then shot back up, blew out and in, and again down he went. Then he realized, “I’m free!”

He headed straight out to sea. He would dive, stay under as he paddled and come up one to three seconds and dive again. He kept this up. This is exactly what he would have done a couple of years before when he was just a hatchling and running to the sea but now he was two feet long and about seventy pounds.

He was swimming at his maximum, about one and one half to two miles per hour. He didn’t know exactly where he was going, but he knew where he was. Turtles navigate by wave direction, sunlight, and temperature. They have an internal magnetic compass. They have a magnetic crystal in their brain which can sense the earth’s magnetic field. Sebastian kept paddling and paddling.

They awoke to a bit of light shining in through the small entrance they had crawled in. Grandpa sat up, reached over, and used a valuable match to light the lantern. A black sooty flame cast shadows inside the cave. Grandpa adjusted the wick, and the flame cleaned itself.

The flickering light shined on a sitting-up Parker rubbing the sleep out of his eyes, yawning, and stretching.

Grandpa started to rise, “Hold it right there, Grandpa! Eat a little bite first,” as she reached in her bag, I know if you two get started, you’ll never stop to eat some energy! Here, it’s cold but it will help.”

“Thank you dear. Here, Parker. You heard your Grandma.”

“Yes, Ma’m, Yes, Sir. Thank you.”

“I’m going to take a look outside to see if it’s safe. Parker, stay with Grandma a minute till I’m back.”
“Oh...Grandpa,” Parker complained.

Grandpa crawled out. There were sudden gusts of occasional wind carrying some pelting rain. It was light but many dark clouds were moving about. He could see some downed trees, but no water-surge damage. Basically they had been high and dry.

He put his head back up to the cave entrance, “Hand me out the bags as you get them packed.”

Grandma and Parker came out. They loaded up and started down the trail back towards the house. Along the way they had to climb over some downed trees that had fallen across the trail.

“Well we’re blessed, thank the Good Lord,” Grandpa said as their home came into view, “We’re all three in good shape. But the shed is damaged, and the front room of the house has some problems. It looks like it is from wind and rain. See where the water came up over the dune down by the beach. It knocked over these trees and came up to our front but not inside.”

“Grandma said, “ You’ll be able to fix it?”

“Yes, Dear, I made it, and I can do it again! Parker, help me clear this mess so Grandma can get in her kitchen. I see the front room has missing siding and roof panels and water damage. But look, the kitchen and the rest of the house is ok! We’re going out to the shed and get some tools. Come on, Parker”

A lot of the shed roof panels had been blown off, and it was leaning precariously. Grandpa looked in, “It looks bad but it won’t fall. I’m going in and drag out the metal box of tools. Stay here, Parker.”

“There, that wasn’t too bad.” He opened the box and took out hammers, nails, a crow bar, and a saw. “We’ll use the shed roof tin to repair the house roof, and the shed boards to fix the sides of the house.”

“Parker, now that we’ve got the house in shape and our shed is half what it was, it’s time to go looking for our dugout canoe.”

Florida Keys' Watercolor Kapers - Turtle Schooner

Florida Keys’ Watercolor Kapers by Bob Kranich

The Cayman Turtle Schooner, (Part 8, Excerpt 73)

This is a story, titled The Cayman Turtle Schooner. This story will tell about the forming and history of the Cayman Islands, the green sea turtle’s habits and life style, the building of a dugout canoe, and then a schooner, and lastly about the historic two-masted turtle schooner, A. M. Adams. Our two main characters Grandpa and Parker are now sailing their dugout canoe.

The Cayman Turtle Schooner

Grandpa, look, he sure has gotten big! He is about the size of grandma’s frying pan,” Parker exclaimed.

“It looks like we made that turtle crawl none-too-soon. Let me grab him by the sides of his shell and we’ll take him to
his new home.”

“Grandpa, look at Sebastian’s shell. I just noticed that it’s kind of heart shaped.”

“That’s right, Sonny.”

“Grandpa, look at the many colors. They are brown, dark green, some grey and black. But look there in the middle there is also some yellow. It looks like a cross!”

“So it is, Parker. We may have a holy turtle!

“Oh, Grandpa, I don’t know about that, but he sure is special.”

“Here we are, Sebastian. Let’s see if you like the turtle crawl,” Grandpa said as Parker opened the shore gate.

They waded in and Grandpa set Sebastian in the water. There was a sudden splash as the turtle’s flippers grabbed the water and he dived. Grandpa and Parker went out, closed the gate and sat down on an old knurled driftwood log. They watched Sebastian. He would come back up to the top and with a single explosive breath expel all the old air. He would then do a rapid inhalation which replaced the air in his lungs and then dive down again.
“I never heard him do that before, Grandpa.”

“He couldn’t dive very far in that tub he was in, so he didn’t have to take a fast breath, hold it, and come back up for air. Now that we’ve got Sebastian taken care of, tomorrow we’re going turtle hunting.”

Parker said, “I’m ready.”

They were a little over a quarter mile out from their house, which was about an eighth of a mile past the coral reefs. They had been turtling and fishing whenever time had allowed them this last year. Every now and then they would find a turtle but the fishing was good! The water out here was deep blue, and deep it was! The Cayman islands lay adjacent to the Cayman Trench. The Cayman Trench was very deep water, over four miles deep, and for that reason Grandpa did not venture too far out.

“There’s one, Grandpa! Over to the right.”

“I see it,” Grandpa said, as he dipped his paddle and headed towards it. Drop the sail and grab your paddle. Just like before, we’ll ease up to him, drop the weighted rope over his head, catch his flippers, and pull him in.”

The turtle dived.

“We'll have to guess where he’ll come up.”

They paddled along on their present trajectory. The turtle came up, blew out, breathed in, and started to dive. Parker looped the rope over the turtle, and it sank over in front of its head.

“I’ve got him!” Parker yelled.

Grandpa and Parker both pulled hard on the rope. It was hooked around both flippers. The turtle rolled up and over the sides of the dugout canoe and bounced upside down in the bottom, all four flippers moving wildly in the air.

“Leave him on his back. It’s the best way to transfer him,” Grandpa said. “Let’s head in, Parker. Up sail! It looks like Sebastian will have another friend to keep him company. That will make two extra turtles in the crawl.”

“Grandma, tomorrow Parker and I will sail down to Channel Bay to sell those two turtles. We should be back by evening. Can you please pack us a lunch?”

“Sure can. Anything for my two best men.”

They had about eight miles to sail to the west. They were paralleling the shore. The wind was at their back, blowing east to west. They would have to tack* going back. They reached the end of the island and had to swing to the south. When they got to the lee side, they headed in towards the bluff. There were a few houses, a pier, and a few sails in the mere hint of a harbor. They approached the pier, and right next to some local dugout canoes, there was a sloop. As they got close, someone hailed them.

“Ahoy, I’m Captain James Green of the sloop Mable Jane. Who be you?”

They came along side. “I’m Grandpa and this is Parker, my grandson.”

“Tie up and come aboard. Are those turtles for sale?”

Grandpa threw James the line. “Yes,” he said.

“I’ll give ye wholesale for them,” the captain offered.

“Wholesale and ten percent,” Grandpa answered.

“Deal it is then!” Captain James replied, “My first mate will bring them aboard. Come with me.”

“This is Richard, my first mate. Richard, we’ve got a couple of turtles. Have the hands stow them.”

They all shook hands.

James took them down inside the boat to a room with a table, “I’ll be right back. Smith, get these men, a drink, and a biscuit.”
A fellow, more-than-likely the Captain’s steward, appeared wearing a coarse sailcloth apron and bearing some punch and some pastries.

Thank ye kindly, Sir,” Grandpa said.

“You’re more-n welcome. Made them fresh this mar’n.”

“Here’s your pay, Grandpa.” Captain James came back into the cabin.

“Parker said, “Mr. James, Captain, Sir, can we look around at your ship?”

“Why yes, you can. Come along. She is a sloop. Single-masted. We can put up four sails if need be. We usually use the two you see. She is sixty-two feet and the fastest sloop, I’ll bet, in the Caribbean. We just stopped here to take on some water. We were told that the base of that limestone bluff has a sweet spring, and it sure has.”

“We’re headed to Cuba, to’ther side, to Havana harbor. Going to pick up some pineapples and then make a run to Key West.”

“Wow!” Parker exclaimed.

“As you can see, this here is where we steer our sloop,” Captain James continued. “That there, in the middle, is our long boat. It has long oars for six men. It’s pretty heavy, but we can launch it with that davit tackle right here.”

“Look, Grandpa. This boat is not made of a log, it’s all boards.”

“They're called planks, young fella, lot easier to build with ‘em,” Captain James said.

Parker looked all over the long boat. It intrigued him.

“That youngster is inquisitive,” Captain James said to Grandpa.

“Yes, Sir he is a bright boy. He helped me build that dugout canoe.”

“And a fine boat it is, Sir. I watched you two come around the tip there. A fine bit of seamanship.”

“Thank you, Captain James,” Grandpa said. “Come on, Parker, we’d best be on our way.”

Back in their dugout, Captain James threw them their line and waved as they paddled away from the sloop.

“We already sold our turtles. We go’n home, Grandpa?”

“Not so fast, Sonny. We’ve got some money. Let’s go to the little store on shore there. We’ll get some coffee, some sugar for Grandma, and they might even have a treat for you!”

“Let’s go. Thanks, Gramps.”

After some shopping they paddled away from the small dock, put up their sail, and left Channel Bay fast disappearing in the distance behind them. As soon as they rounded the end of Cayman Brac, the wind hit them.

“Now, Parker, you’re going to learn how to tack,” Grandpa hollered. “We’ll have to stay little farther offshore because we have to go side-ways left and then side-ways right against the wind. That way the sail will catch the wind, and we’ll be able to move forward against it.”

They were tacking back and forth and about half of the way home when the wind suddenly shifted from the northeast blowing towards the southwest to the southeast blowing strong gusts towards the northwest.

The winds have shifted, Parker. We won’t have to tack, but I don’t like it. Look over our island towards the south,” Grandpa pointed.

The sky was dark with a green tint.

“I thought it looked a little bit strange this morning,” Grandpa said. “It’s also real humid.”

“What is it, Grandpa?”

“It’s a bad storm a’comin. We got to get home!”

June COVID Newsletter From SW Florida Health Council

The head of the UN World Health Organization (WHO) has declared an end to COVID-19 as a global public health emergency (PHE). Now that we have safe and effective vaccines, ample testing infrastructure, and most people have some level of immunity due to vaccinations, COVID-19 is no longer considered an emergency.

"WHO has not explicitly declared the end of the pandemic, but only the end of the health emergency due to specific criteria being met," - Dr. Jayadevan

Even though the PHE is ending, COVID-19 remains a public health priority. There are many ways your actions can help protect you, your household, and your community from severe illness. In addition to basic hygiene practices, additional prevention actions include staying up to date with vaccines, improving ventilation, getting tested when needed, wearing masks or respirators, and seeking treatment.

The end of the PHE declaration also means some of the mandated data will no longer be reported to the Department of Health (DPH) or nationally. The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) will stop reporting community levels of Covid-19 and will no longer require certain case information from hospitals or testing data from laboratories. With other virus-tracking efforts winding down, wastewater data will likely become increasingly important in the months ahead. Grandparents Charged With Child Neglect

GRANDPARENTS ARRESTED ON CHILD NEGLECT CHARGES

During the evening hours of Friday, May 26, 2023, Hendry County Deputies arrested grandparents on charges of Child Neglect.

Hendry County Deputies responded to a third-party call reporting a man that needed medical attention. Hendry County Dispatchers noted that the reporter sounded incoherent. When deputies arrived on scene, they made initial contact with 55-year-old Raquel Divina Pena. Deputies reported that when speaking with Pena she was unable to form a sentence and when asked if she was in need of medical attention, she was unable to answer deputies and EMS personnel and only pointed to the living room area of the home.

Both Deputies and EMS looked inside the home and could see an infant child crying profusely, and in need of care. Deputies and EMS personnel immediately took custody of the child and notified the parent.

It was learned by Deputies that the child’s mother had trusted the care of her infant to Pena and upon being made aware of the current circumstances, she became emotionally distraught of the lack of care that Pena was providing for her baby. Deputies reassured the mother the child was now safe. With permission from the mother, the infant was later turned over to the custody of a trusted family member.

Deputies determined by the admission of both grandparents that they had been drinking heavily. It was obvious from the condition of both adults that they were unable to communicate effectively and were physically unable to move around safely; and neither were able to provide the proper care, supervision and services needed to maintain the infant child’s physical and emotional needs.

Both grandparents, identified as Raquel Divina Pena and Johnny Apparicio Moreno, 53, were both arrested on charges of Child Neglect. Both Pena and Moreno were released on May 27, 2023, on $2,000.00 bond.

Armed Man Arrested Carrying Pound Of Marijuana In Backpack

DEPUTIES ARREST MAN WITH NEARLY A POUND OF MARIJUANA IN HIS POSSESSION

On Friday, May 26, 2023, Hendry County Deputy Matthew Kinney was on routine patrol when he noticed a cracked taillight on the rear of a vehicle. Deputy Kinney was notified by Dispatch that the vehicle registration was expired.

Deputy Kinney identified the driver of the vehicle and spoke with her about the reason for the stop. As the deputy was speaking with the driver, he could smell a strong odor of marijuana emitting from the car.

Deputy Kinney then spoke with the passenger of the vehicle identified as 23-year-old Dylan Scott Vangraafeiland, of Cape Coral, and requested his identification. Both individuals were asked to step out of the vehicle to which they did. It was at this time Vangraafeiland was noticed to be standing with a backpack on his shoulder. He was then ordered by law enforcement to place the backpack inside the vehicle.

Vangraafeiland became uncooperative and as the deputy attempted to place him under arrest, Vangraafeiland began to resist the deputy. The subject was able to break free from the deputies and fled on foot. Matthew was able to apprehend Vangraafeiland and during the struggle, the suspect continued to reach toward his right pants pocket. As the Deputy assisted the handcuffed suspect to his feet, Vangraafeiland attempted to reach into his pants pocket again.

A search of Vangraafeiland revealed a loaded black semi-automatic handgun. Deputies also searched the backpack and found inside nearly a pound of marijuana along with a scale, a thirty round extended magazine loaded with 40 caliber bullets and a bag of .223 caliber rifle rounds.

Vangraafeiland was placed under arrest and transported to the Hendry County Sheriff’s Office and charged with Possession of Marijuana over 20 grams, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia to Transport Drugs, Carrying Concealed Firearm without a Permit and Resisting Officer. On Saturday, May 27, 2023, Vangraafeiland was released on $8,000.00 bond.
