IMMOKALEE, FL. -- A multi-vehicle crash at 11:41 AM on SR 82 east of Naples Avenue West near the southwestern Hendry county line and Collier county caused two to be critically injured and seven children passengers taken to area hospitals with minor injuries.
A 2008 Mitsubishi Endeavor driven by Tikeisha Hawkins, 29 of Immokalee, Florida was traveling west on SR 82, east of Naples Avenue West as a 2002 Saturn LS1 driven by Jessica Jackson, 28 of Immokalee was traveling east on SR 82 east of Naples Ave.
A third vehicle, a 2000 Mercury Cougar, driven by Demmona Short, 37 of Lehigh Acres was traveling east on SR 82, two vehicles back from the second vehicle. The first and second vehicles were approaching each other as Hawkins lost control and her vehicle began rotating counterclockwise while traveling in a southwest direction.
Her car traveled into Jackson's path. Subsequently, the front right portion of the Endeavor collided with the front left portion of the Saturn which post collision rotated counterclockwise as it traveled slightly southeast.
It came to final rest facing northeast, while occupying the eastbound lane of SR 82 and the paved apron. Post collision, the Endeavor continued to rotate counterclockwise as it traveled in a west direction. The vehicle that was in between the second and third vehicle was able to avoid collision by maneuvering onto the south shoulder.
Short observed the collision and maneuvered the Mercury to the right in an attempt to avoid collision. Subsequently, her left rear portion of the Mercury collided with the rear left portion of the Endeavor and her vehicle came to rest facing northeast on the south grassy shoulder of SR 82.
The Endeavor came to rest facing north, while occupying the eastbound lane of SR 82 and the paved apron. During this crash, it was raining. This crash occurred 467 feet west of the Collier County line.
The driver of the Saturn and passenger Tabricka Jackson, age 12 were both taken to Lee Memorial Hospital with critical injuries. The driver and child passenger in the Cougar were not injured.
The FHP Trooper Danny Diaz and Investigator Corporal Michael Michaud indicate on the crash report it is unknown if alcohol was a factor for the driver of the second vehicle. Charges are pending investigation.

LABELLE, FL. -- If you want to learn the answers to questions about invasive exotic reptiles and other animals in south Florida you are invited to attend a free program presented by reptile expert, Cheryl Millett.
Hendry-Glades Audubon will host this event on Monday September 9 at 7 p. m. at the Cooperative Extension, Dallas Townsend Building 1085 Pratt Blvd. in LaBelle.
Cheryl Millett is a Biologist at The Nature Conservancy and leads Python Patrol, the Central Florida Lygodium Strategy, and the Heartland CISMA. Python Patrol is a program to provide containment and early detection and rapid response of invasive exotic Burmese pythons, and other invasive species in south and central Florida, by training detectors to accurately identify and report them, training responders to safely capture them, and providing a hotline to link the two.
The Central Florida Lygodium Strategy is a partnership to apply a regional approach to stopping the northern spread of Old World climbing fern on public and private lands. The Heartland CISMA is a partnership to regionally focus efforts to deal with invasive species. Cheryl also coordinated Jay Watch, a citizen science program monitoring the federally threatened Florida scrub-jay, which is now a project of Florida Audubon.

Francis Howard Speaking At Museum Program
LABELLE, FL. -- LaBelle native Francis Howard, a member of the area's pioneer James Seth Howard Family, will open LaBelle Heritage Museum's 2013/2014 Program Year at LaBelle City Hall on Thursday, September 5, at 7 o'clock.
The meeting is open to the public and members and guests are asked to be seated by 7 o'clock. A short business meeting will follow the pause for refreshments following the program and question and answer session following Mr. Howard's talk.
Regular monthly program meetings are scheduled for LaBelle City Hall on the first Thursdayof the month from September through April at 7 o'clock.

Case Under Investigation - Suspect Under Arrest
OKEECHOBEE, FL. -- Okeechobee County Sheriff’s officials report that on Saturday, August 31, 2013 at approximately 4:34 a.m. Deputies responded to the 3400 block of N.W. 16 Ave. Upon arrival deputies found the body of a 29-year old Hispanic male that had been stabbed in the chest.
The victim died at the scene.
The name has not been released as family has not yet been notified.
The suspect Manuel Navarro age 50, was found walking from the scene and was taken into custody. Investigators and crime scene responded and are continuing the investigation to determine motive.
Additional details will be released when they are received.

Arrest Made - 17 Pounds Of Marijuana Confiscated
LABELLE, FL. -- On Friday, August 30, 2013 at approximately 3:25 pm, members of the Hendry County Narcotics Unit conducted a controlled delivery of a package suspected of containing marijuana at a North LaBelle home, which resulted in the arrest of a 24 year old man.
A narcotics investigator, posing as a parcel serviceman, delivered the suspicious package to 610 Caloosa Estates Drive., in North Labelle, which appears to be a rented home occupied by the subject.
After a short period of time, Narcotics Investigators witnessed a white Jeep driven by the suspect, 24 year old David Ramirez Jr. pull into the driveway of the home.
Investigators witnessed Ramirez pick the package up and take it inside the home. Approximately 15 minutes later Ramirez stepped outside the residence to speak with a guest who had arrived. Investigators then approached the house and detained Ramirez in the home.
At that time Sheriff's Investigators conducted a search of the home and located approximately 17 pounds of marijuana, with a street value of $17,000.00, inside a red duffle bag.
Ramirez was taken into custody and transported to the Hendry County Jail. Ramirez is charged with Possession of Marijuana with Intent to Sell and Possession of Marijuana over 20 Grams. He is currently being held without bond.
