DEPUTIES ARREST MAN WITH NEARLY A POUND OF MARIJUANA IN HIS POSSESSION
On Friday, May 26, 2023, Hendry County Deputy Matthew Kinney was on routine patrol when he noticed a cracked taillight on the rear of a vehicle. Deputy Kinney was notified by Dispatch that the vehicle registration was expired.
Deputy Kinney identified the driver of the vehicle and spoke with her about the reason for the stop. As the deputy was speaking with the driver, he could smell a strong odor of marijuana emitting from the car.
Deputy Kinney then spoke with the passenger of the vehicle identified as 23-year-old Dylan Scott Vangraafeiland, of Cape Coral, and requested his identification. Both individuals were asked to step out of the vehicle to which they did. It was at this time Vangraafeiland was noticed to be standing with a backpack on his shoulder. He was then ordered by law enforcement to place the backpack inside the vehicle.
Vangraafeiland became uncooperative and as the deputy attempted to place him under arrest, Vangraafeiland began to resist the deputy. The subject was able to break free from the deputies and fled on foot. Matthew was able to apprehend Vangraafeiland and during the struggle, the suspect continued to reach toward his right pants pocket. As the Deputy assisted the handcuffed suspect to his feet, Vangraafeiland attempted to reach into his pants pocket again.
A search of Vangraafeiland revealed a loaded black semi-automatic handgun. Deputies also searched the backpack and found inside nearly a pound of marijuana along with a scale, a thirty round extended magazine loaded with 40 caliber bullets and a bag of .223 caliber rifle rounds.
Vangraafeiland was placed under arrest and transported to the Hendry County Sheriff’s Office and charged with Possession of Marijuana over 20 grams, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia to Transport Drugs, Carrying Concealed Firearm without a Permit and Resisting Officer. On Saturday, May 27, 2023, Vangraafeiland was released on $8,000.00 bond.
