Museum Program October 4 Celebrates Hispanic Heritage

LaBelle Heritage Museum’s Wednesday October 4th Program Meeting at the Dallas B. Townsend Agricultural Center at 1085 Pratt Boulevard will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with a local flavor. Ramon Sanalfonso Rodriguez, a member of the 2018 Swamp Cabbage Pioneer Family headed by his parents the late Ramon S. Rodriguez and his 100 year old surviving wife Bersabe, will recollect his youthful experiences with Rudy Juarez in O.M.I.C.A. – Organized Migrants In Community Action – and later with Cesar Chavez as a farm labor union organizer with UFW, United Farm Workers, and his hand in negotiating union contracts with some the largest Citrus operations in Florida.
Rodriguez later worked with the local telephone company and is now retired from CenturyLink where his son Ramon Rodriquez III works today in basically the same position his father did.
Since Hendry County ranks second only to Miami-Dade County in the percentage of those identifying themselves as Hispanic, this program should be of more than passing interest to the majority, Chicano or Anglo. The Townsend Agricultural Center’s doors will open at 6:30 p.m. for the program which begins at 7 o’clock. The public is welcome and there is no charge.

What High Speed Internet Is Available At Your Home?

The FCC has published maps showing how many internet providers are available at your home or business address and just what download and upload speeds are available.

Although the data may be a year or so old, it gives consumers a good guide to see what's available that they might not have known from company advertising or word of mouth.

At my particular location there are not only CenturyLink DSL and Comcast Cable but two satellite services available. The cable service is by far the fastest internet, with DSL falling significantly below in speeds available with 25 Mbps download, and 2 Mbps upload.

You can go to the map for your address at https://broadbandmap.fcc.gov/#/

Port LaBelle Sewer Cleaning Ongoing

LABELLE, FL. -- Under a recent grant, the Port LaBelle Utility System is inspecting and cleaning all sewer lines in Port LaBelle in Hendry county including Unit 4 (Eucalyptus Village), Unit 5 (Laurel Oak Village), Country Walk, and the Port Labelle Villas in Glades county. All other Port LaBelle communities have septic tanks and do not have sewer lines.

National Water Main Cleaning Co. from New Jersey won the lowest bid to suck out sand and debris from the sewer mains which are about 10 feet underground, and make a video inspection of all the pipes to see if there is damage along the main line or ground water intrusion.

The company forces water into the 8 inch sewer lines between manholes at about 500 psi to scour the pipes and sucks the muck out into a giant tank on their truck, then sends a video camera through the pipes to see where ground water is leaking into the pipes.

Watching the operator today, it was noticed in the Laurel Oaks subdivision many breaks in the pipe where ground water was leaking in, as well as "watermarks" showing where sand and silt had been laying on about 25% of the bottom of the sewer pipes. (Right: photo of live video monitor)

Port LaBelle Utilities says several people have called complaining of water in their bathroom after the inspections. Supposedly the 500 psi water scouring the pipe built up pressure in the lateral lines serving the residences and shot water out of the toilet, in one case, hitting the bathroom ceiling.

Lockdown At Clewiston Elementary Schools

Nathaniel Lee Arrested After School Incident

Clewiston Elementary Schools were on a brief lockdown today until Hendry County Deputies apprehended the man that entered Central Elementary School.

Deputy Julio Perez was on duty today at Central Elementary when he witnessed a man enter the front door of the school.  He then heard Principal, Melissa Carter say that the man was not permitted to be on their school campus.

The man, later identified as 27 year old, Nathaniel Lee, walked back out the front door of the school and off school property.

Court records indicate Lee is homeless and has been arrested three times for non-support of children or spouse, the last arrest on August 29.

Deputy Perez contacted road units to assist in locating Lee because they had lost sight of him.  Perez then contacted Eastside/Westside Elementary School (ESE/WSE) Resource Officer (SRO), Shanita Campbell to make her aware that he could now see Lee walking toward her school.

Perez and Principal watched the man walk across the PE field of ESE schools.

Central Elementary and Eastside/Westside Elementary Schools were placed on a brief lockdown until Lee was taken into custody by deputies.

“This was a classic example of a working relationship between school staff and Deputies”, said Hendry County Sheriff Steve Whidden.  “The job of the SRO is so vital and important.  Every day that SRO puts on his or her uniform, they know there are thousands of parents relying on them to protect their children and keep the community and school campus safe.  Today, that is exactly what they did.”

Deputies transported Lee to the Sheriff’s Office sub-station.  After Lee struggled with deputies, he was placed under arrest for Trespass and Resisting Arrest without violence.
