Obituaries - Paul Allen Wright, James Barton Hull

Paul Allen Wright, age 74, of Clewiston, Florida formally of Rockmart, Georgia was welcomed home to his heavenly home on June 16, 2024, in Delray Beach, Florida. 

 Paul was born on September 18, 1949, in Barnesville, Ohio to the late Harry and the late Melvina Snyder Wright. He married Vickie Steen, and she survives him. He was Ohio State Bass Federation Champion in 1983. He enjoyed being on his boat and fishing, also riding his bike. Paul was a loving and caring husband to Vickie, a loving and understanding father to his children and a loving grandfather to his grandchildren and great grandchild.

Paul leaves fond memories with his loving wife; Vickie of Clewiston, Florida, his daughter; Tami Otoupal and her husband Scott, Bobbi Kenney and her husband John, six grandchildren and one great grandchild. 

 Paul was also preceded in death by his two brothers; Michael and Fred Wright. 

 Paul’s life will be celebrated with a service on July 6, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Clewiston where visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Paul will be cremated after the celebration and he will be laid to rest in Sweetwater Memorial Park in Hiram, Georgia at a later date.

Paul’s service was entrusted to Akin-Davis Funeral Home – Clewiston.

James Barton Hull, affectionately known as Jimmy Hull, passed away peacefully on June 17th at the age of 87. Born on May 20, 1937, in Felda, Florida, Jimmy lived a life rich in adventure with those close to him.

Growing up in Felda, he developed a love for the woods, often spending his days cowboying, hog hunting, and chasing an adventure.

In 1976, Jimmy married the love of his life, Jeannette, and together they built a beautiful life. A proud husband and father, Jimmy is survived by his wife, Jeannette Hull; his children, Jerry, Steve, Sherry, Terry, and Jenise & Stacey deceased: his grandchildren, JB, Brian, Joey, Amanda, Sarah, Steven, Amber, Annie, and Joel, and Rachel deceased: and his great-grandchildren Desiree, Jasmine, Maria, Sylvia, Canaan, Gideon, Vera, Thea, Jackson, Bennett, and Aurora: and great great grand child Zion. 

He is survived by his sister, Kay Willis and preceded in death by his siblings: Etta Jane, Judy, Patricia, Grace, John, Jerry and Eddie.

In his leisure time, Jimmy enjoyed hunting, fishing, and exploring the big cypress, often sharing these passions with his loved ones. Whether it was riding his buggy or simply spending time with his family, he found joy in the little moments that life had to offer.

A celebration of Jimmy's life will be held at 9:00am on June 24th at Felda Cemetery. A luncheon will be at the Primitive Baptist Church where family and friends will gather to honor his memory and share in the many stories and cherished moments he leaves behind.

Rest in peace, Jimmy. Your love and light will forever shine in our hearts.

Fisheating Creek Wildlife Management Area 10-Year Plan Hearing

Help plan the future of the Fisheating Creek Wildlife Management Area

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) invites you to attend the Fisheating Creek Wildlife Management Area 10-year Land Management Plan public hearing on Tuesday, July 23. The public hearing will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the Glades County Commission Chambers, Room 201, 500 Ave J SW, Moore Haven, Fla., 33471.

The Fisheating Creek WMA encompasses approximately 18,514 acres in Glades County and is a crucial link in the wildlife corridor between several other public conservation lands. Framed by bald cypress swamps and hardwood hammocks, Fisheating Creek stretches 40 miles as it travels along its path through the Fisheating Creek WMA. Conservation of Fisheating Creek’s floodplain and upland communities provides critical watershed and water quality protection for the creek. The area’s wetlands also filter and aid in the protection of water flowing into Lake Okeechobee. Functioning as the second largest tributary of Lake Okeechobee, the creek remains a vital waterway of the lake. The Fisheating Creek WMA also offers many opportunities for public recreation, including hunting, fishing, wildlife watching, nature study, hiking, boating, camping and horseback riding.

“The Fisheating Creek WMA was purchased to ensure the preservation of fish, wildlife, and other natural and cultural resources for future generations, and to provide fish and wildlife-focused outdoor recreation opportunities to the public,” said Elizabeth Norregaard, FWC Land Conservation Planner. “This Management Plan will specify how we intend to accomplish that goal.”

Work To Begin On Country Village Drainage

(June 21, 2024) – Please be advised that beginning on Monday, June 24, 2024, Hendry County’s contractor, M&M Asphalt Maintenance, Inc., will be commencing roadwork and drainage infrastructure improvements within the Country Village Municipal Services Benefit Unit (MSBU) in LaBelle, FL.

The project is expected to be complete within 60 days.

Flagmen will be present to direct traffic. The speed limit will be reduced through the project area.

Motorists should expect lane closures and possible delays throughout the duration of the project and allow extra time for their commute.

Motorists and pedestrians should use extra caution when traveling through the work zone.

Please note that this schedule is tentative and subject to change. The Hendry County Engineering Department will notify of any changes.

Active Investigation Continues At 310 N. Industrial Loop

INVESTIGATION CONTINUES AT 310 NORTH INDUSTRIAL LOOP

Testing continues today at 310 North Industrial Loop. Detectives with the Hendry County Sheriff’s Office are continuing to check the air quality and properties to determine what has caused deputies to become suddenly ill on Tuesday, June 18, 2024.

Friday morning, June 21, 2024, HCSO Sheriff Steve Whidden along with members of the Hendry County Sheriff’s and representatives from local, state and military met to review what they has been disclosed at this area.

Sheriff Steve Whidden said, “At this point, I am concerned with the safety of our personnel who will be entering this scene. We have requested the assistance of the below agencies for their TECHNICAL SUPPORT.” Sheriff Whidden continued, “we do not believe the public is in danger. Members outside the premises are NOT experiencing symptoms of any kind.; we believe that whatever has created this illness is contained within the property.”

Sheriff Whidden further stated his concern level is low at this time due to the fact that our federal partners, with the best lab equipment available, has conducted a complete and thorough testing of the air quality for chemicals and hazardous liquids which at this point have come back negative in all areas. We are continuing to cover every square foot of this ground to ensure the public and my deputies are not at risk”.

Lee County Unified Haz-Mat Team After extensive testing and investigation by both local and federal authorities, HCSO receives an “all clear” for 310 N. Industrial Loop.

Law enforcement authorities are still unclear what caused deputies to become ill; however, detectives will begin processing the property for stolen property.

Until the completion of their investigation, the property at 310 N. Industrial Loop will remain an active crime scene.

Robert’s Best, (Part 11, Excerpt 96)

This is a new story. Robert’s Best is a sail boat. Grandfather Roberts is going to sail it on the Intercostal waterway from Texas to Key West, Florida. That will be an adventure. Then his grandchildren and their parents will come to Key West on a visit. There will be a lot of funny happenings until the criminals from a previous story get into action. A side note is that a 1935 antique Chris-Craft Model 557 Cabin Cruiser is going to play an important part in the rest of the story. Grandfather Roberts has arrived in Key West. He has meet Honest Dave and had a tour of his Chris-Craft. Both He and Dave are looking around Key West for a house for Grandfather Roberts. They have just hired a carriage and driver to both look around, and see the sights.

“You’re doing great, Franklin, keep it up,” Dave encouraged.

“Well, Sirs, here’s our turn. It’s on the left in the middle of the block.”

“Feel that breeze, Tom,” Dave said.

We pulled up in the front of a beautiful old Key West Bahamian style house.

“Look, Tom, it’s got your porches, I mean verandas.” Dave noted.

“It’s too good to be true! Thank you, Dave and Franklin. Let’s see if anyone’s home. Franklin, rest awhile and stay with us till we find out anything. I’ll pay you for your time.”

“Yes, sir. I’ll be right here.”

Dave and I stepped down from the carriage.

Dave said, “Tom, I don’t know if you know anything about this architecture, but these Key West old homes are all unique. In fact unique to Key West. This here beautiful little two-story baby is a three-bay Classic Revival. But they have added porches. See the separate roofs over the porches”

We walked up to and opened the picket fence gate, then went up the walk and the three stairs to the porch. The house was a light airy yellow trimmed in white, with some gingerbread.* There was a bell button next to the door. I pushed it.

Ding...Dong!

We could hear someone coming. The main door opened.

“Oh, hi! May I help you?”

“Yes Ma’m, we saw the For Sale sign, and I’m interested.”

“Well, sirs, if you would have a seat on the porch there, I’ll call the realtor. Be right back.”

She came back out with a tray, glasses, a pitcher of lemonade, and some homemade cookies. “She’ll be here shortly. They're only a few blocks away. I see your driver out there, would you like to take him some lemonade and cookies?”

Dave interjected, “Let me do it, Tom. That way you two can talk about the house.”

He went out to Franklin carrying a glass of lemonade and a couple of cookies in a napkin.

The lady said, “Oh goodness me! I’m sorry I didn’t introduce myself. I’m Kelly Albright. My husband is Naval Air and he’s being reassigned.”

“So nice to meet you, Ma'am. I’m Tom Roberts. Just got in from thirty-eight days sailing the Gulf Intercostal Waterway, from Galveston, Texas.”

“My, so adventurous. Oh, here comes the realtor now.”

A new ‘62 Caddy pulled up, and a young lady got out. She and Dave were talking as they came up.

Dave said, “Tom, I’d like for you to meet Ms. Betty Thomas. She is probably the most knowledgeable and pretty realtor on this here island!”

He looked at Mrs. Albright. “Ma'am I loved your cookies and lemonade, but I didn’t get your name. I’m Dave Crench. Purveyor of fine antiques, out of Homestead, Florida. This good man and I have our boats docked down at the Key West Bight.”

“Oh, I’m sorry, Mister, Crench, I’m Kelly Albright.”

The realtor, Betty Thomas, said, “Gentlemen, would you like to go in and look around?”

On the second floor, Betty Thomas said, “This house is unusual because of the porches all the way around. You will get both the view and the breeze off the Atlantic from this back porch. Not to mention, you don’t have beach access, but nothing will be built between you and the Atlantic. When the Navy donates it to the National Park Service, it should be a public park along with Fort Jefferson.”

“Ma'am, if it is reasonable enough, I’m interested,” I said.

“That check is a draw on the Bank of Houston, Texas. It will be as good as gold!”

Betty Thomas replied, “Tom, give me two days to verify it, get all the paperwork ready, and we should be able to close in a week.” She then looked at the owner, “Is that suitable, Kelly?”

“Why yes, Betty. I’m almost finished packing and will notify the movers just as soon as you let me know.”

“Ms. Albright, any furnishings you wish to part with, just let me know, and I’ll purchase them,” I informed her.

The realtor, Betty Albright said, “We’ll be in touch, gentlemen. It’s been very nice.”

Dave and I walked back out to Franklin, Bessie, and the carriage.

“Well, Franklin, you're taking your sweetie out to eat,” I said, as I handed Franklin a very sizable tip.

“Thank you very kindly, Sir, Mister Tom.”

“Really, I’m so thankful to you, Franklin. Well, Dave, what’s next?”

“Do you have more time, Franklin?” Dave asked.

“Yes, Sir!”

“We need the full Old Town tour,” Dave said with a flourish.
“Yes, Sirs! Hang on. Here we go.”

“Franklin, we need some lunch,” Dave said. “It made me real hungry watching Tom spend his money.”

“There is a restaurant only a couple of blocks from here. Real good Italian food.”

“Good. Let’s take out, and then you can carry on with the tour. By the way, we’re buying, Franklin.”

“Thank you, Sirs.”

We did the historic high spots, just stopping briefly at each one: Southernmost Point, lighthouse, Hemingway House, Oldest House, Aquarium, The Maine Memorial, and finishing up at the Turtle Crawls in the Key West Bight, right next to their boats.

“Franklin, it’s been a busy, pleasurable, and successful day. We want to thank you.”

“Sirs, I want to thank you! If you ever need me, you will see me and old Bessie here riding around the city. Also here’s my card with my phone.”

LaBelle Warehouse Under Investigation - Arrest Made

310 NORTH INDUSTRIAL LOOP

LABELLE, FL -- Entry to North Industrial Loop is currently closed to incoming/thru traffic; South Industrial Loop is open to local traffic only and is not for thru traffic.

Hendry County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division along with HCSO Road Patrol Unit, Fire and EMS, Ft. Myers Fire Department Hazardous Materials Unit, Department of Environmental Protection and Homeland Security have resumed the search of 310 N. Industrial Loop, in LaBelle, Florida.

Earlier this morning HCSO Detectives obtained a search warrant for all properties at 310 N. Industrial Loop. At this time a search for stolen vehicles, weapons, tools, narcotics and chemicals will begin.

At approximately 1:30pm, the Haz-Mat Team members entered the suspect mobile home and while beginning to process the scene became ill.

All first responders with Hendry County have been medically cleared.

The suspect, now identified as 45-year-old, Juan Gonzalez Diaz, of Miami, was cleared by physicians and is being held in the Hendry County Jail. Gonzalez Diaz is currently being held without bond on an Outstanding Federal Warrant for Probation Violation.

The property is owned by 6901 NW LLC of 7998 W 6TH AVE, HIALEAH, FL 33014  owned by Norberto Alfonso of the Hialeah address. He runs numerous companies according the the Secretary of State records. 

On Wednesday morning at approximately 9:21am, Hendry County Deputies responded to the area of 310 N. Industrial Loop to follow up on a stolen vehicle. Once on scene, deputies remained for the better part of the day.

At approximately 3:50pm, deputies noticed a body in a motorhome. Deputies discovered the man to be unresponsive and made entry to provide medical care. Upon making entry, they began to feel ill and were later transported to a local medical facility. It is uncertain at this time the cause.

All personnel were treated and released. The suspect was also treated and released to the custody of Hendry County Sheriff's Office. He is currently being held with No Bond on an Outstanding Federal Warrant.

Responded to secure and process the scene. This is an on-going investigation, and updates will be provided as they are made available.

Pool Company Owner Gets 18-year Prison Sentence

Attorney General Ashley Moody’s Office of Statewide Prosecution today secured an 18-year prison sentence for the owner of a pool company defrauding nearly 100 Florida homeowners. 

Ricardo Villarroel Duerto, owner of Villa Pavers and Pools, along with salespersons and a licensed general contractor, defrauded homeowners in excess of $1 million. The Honorable Judge William S. Orth sentenced Villarroel on charges of racketeering and conspiracy to commit racketeering.

Attorney General Ashley Moody said, “This shady contractor took advantage of nearly 100 Florida homeowners, including seniors, trying to buy a pool—causing more than $1 million in losses.”

Villarroel targeted victims in Broward, Collier, Hendry, Hillsborough, Lake, Miami-Dade, Orange, Osceola, Palm Beach, Pasco, Pinellas and Seminole counties. Villarroel promoted low overall prices on pools, compared to market value, as a hook to gain business from eventual victims yet pocketed significant deposits without following through on installation.

According to the investigation, state law enforcement officials received complaints claiming Villa Pavers and Pools collected around 40% of the contracted price for the installation of pools to some of the victims yet did not complete the job. Some of the installations resulted in giant holes in the victims’ backyards, while other projects never started after Villarroel took the deposit by simply cutting off communication with a victim.

Additionally, the investigation uncovered that Villarroel teamed with licensed general contractor Luis Alvarez of Conquer Builders, who aided and abetted Villa Pavers and Pools to defraud homeowners throughout the state. Alvarez sold the use of his general contractor license to Villa Pavers and Pools, an unlicensed contractor company, to present a contractor license to homeowners and obtain building permits.

Villarroel used the license repeatedly and hired two salespeople, Michael Borrego Fernandez and Laura Ballester Alpizar, gaining contract after contract to supercharge the scheme and acquire more business, leading to the excess in cash.

Alvarez, Borrego and Ballester are all in custody facing the same charges as Villarroel. Alvarez pled guilty to both charges with a sentence pending. Borrego and Ballester are out on bond.

Assistant Statewide Prosecutor Rebecca Smith-Hameroff prosecuted the case.

Pioneer Plantation Mosquito Treatment This Week

PUBLIC NOTICE OF AERIAL ADULT MOSQUITO TREATMENTS

Hendry County will be conducting aerial adult mosquito control operations over the Pioneer Plantation and LaDeca Communities Thursday, June 20th, 2024, weather permitting, through Sunday, June 23rd, 2024. These operations will continue throughout the remainder of the year as mosquito levels warrant. The insecticide to treat for adult mosquitoes is approved for application by the Environmental Protection Agency and the State of Florida.

This operation will be conducted by Clarke.

K9 MERLIN AND HANDLER CPL. M. AFONSO CERTIFIED IN PATROL AND TRACKING

Earlier this month, K-9 Merlin and Deputy Afonso completed their Patrol Certification at Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Academy. This training took approximately six months to complete, and consisted of hours of training in tracking, article searches, building searches, area searches, obedience, and criminal apprehension.

K-9 Merlin and Cpl. M. Afonso represented the Hendry County Sheriff's Office with pride and put in many hours of hard work to complete the academy and successfully pass the Florida Law Enforcement Canine Association Certification Exams in Tracking and Patrol.

Since graduating, the team has already been responsible for multiple felony narcotic arrests as well as a successful K-9 track with an apprehension of a suspect who was fleeing from a violent crime.

Deputy Gonzalez And K-9 Receive Narcotic Certifications

K-9 LIBERTY AND HANDLER DEPUTY O. GONZALEZ RECEIVE DUAL CERTIFICATION IN TRACKING AND NARCOTIC DETECTIONS

On Wednesday, June 13, 2024, Deputy Gonzalez and his Bloodhound partner Liberty participated in a Florida Law Enforcement Canine Association (FLECA) Tracking and Narcotics Detection Certification Exam in Cape Coral. The team has worked hard over the last several months and put in hundreds of hours of training to prepare for this exam. Liberty performed very well, and successfully completed the exam.

A special thanks to the Cape Coral Police Department K-9 Unit and the Florida Law Enforcement Canine Association for facilitating the exam.

Deputy Gonzalez and Bloodhound Liberty are currently one of the few Bloodhound teams in Florida certified in both tracking and narcotics detection.

8 Arrests In Harlem Shootings

EIGHT ARRESTED ON WEAPONS AND FIGHT CHARGES

On Wednesday, June 5, 2024, Detectives simultaneously executed three search warrants at three different locations in the Harlem community in response to an ongoing investigation into shootings. HCSO had received several calls sparking the investigation; the last on Wednesday May 29th, 2024, which led to the request for both search and arrest warrants of eight (8) individuals.

This incident occurred at approximately 4:47pm in the area of M&M Convenience Store, located at 944 Kentucky Ave., in Clewiston. It was reported that there were several juveniles fighting in the parking lot and gunshots being fired.

As deputies arrived on scene the juveniles were observed running in several directions. Detectives along with road patrol deputies recovered several shell casings near the entrance of the store and later deputies received reports of bullets lodged in vehicles and residences. Witnesses Interviewed in the area were able to identify some of the individuals and to provide deputies with an account of what had occurred.

Hendry County Detectives requested 8 arrest warrants on these individuals along with Search Warrants.

On June 5, 2024, Deputies did take into custody the following suspects.

41-year-old Roosevelt Adderly, Jr. of Clewiston was arrested on charges of Possession of Cocaine. Adderly was released on June 5, 2024, on $2,500 bond.

19-year-old Larry Willingham of Clewiston was arrested on charges of Affray and was released June 5, 2024, on $2,500.00 bond.

18-year-old Jerzavian Pope of Clewiston was arrested on charges of Affray and was released June 5, 2024, on $2,500.00 bond.

20-year-old Michael Holmes of Clewiston was arrested and charged with Carrying a Concealed Firearm, Possession of Marijuana and Violation of Probation. Holmes is currently being held in the Hendry County Jail with no bond.

17-year-old male of Clewiston was arrested and charged with Child Abuse without Great Bodily Harm, Affray, Discharging a Firearm in Pubic and Possession of Firearm by a Minor. Juvenile is currently being held at the Department of Juvenile Justice

Hendry County Burn Ban Lifted - Tire Disposal Fee Increasing

(June 17, 2024) – LaBelle, Fla. –The burn ban on unregulated outdoor fires in Hendry County has been lifted effective June 17, 2024.

Residents are asked to always exercise caution when burning outside.

Lee County has increased the fee to dispose tires at all Lee County Solid Waste facilities, which include the Transfer Stations in Clewiston and LaBelle, effective July 1, 2024.

For tires originating in Hendry County, effective 07/01/2024, the rates will be as follows:

XL Tires** Off Road Tires $290.00 per ton

This notice also serves as a reminder that all tires brought to any Lee County Solid Waste facility must originate in either Lee or Hendry County.

Hendry County Trash Transfer Stations Opening

LaBelle, Fla. – The Clewiston Transfer Station is now open and the LaBelle Transfer Station will reopen to Hendry County residents beginning Wednesday, June 12th. These facilities required reconstruction following Hurricane Ian.

Transfer Stations are located at 1350 Olympia Avenue in Clewiston and 1280 Forestry Division Road in LaBelle. Hours of operation are 7 a.m. – 4 p.m. Monday – Friday and 7 a.m. – 12 p.m. on Saturdays.

Hendry County residents may now resume disposal of allowable items at the Transfer Stations.

Loads must be secured. Beginning July 1, a $10.00 fee will be imposed for any unsecured load entering the Transfer Stations.

Yard waste delivered to the Transfer Stations must be free of any other garbage, trash or debris and must be 4 feet in length and 4 inches in diameter. Full trees and oversized stumps must be cut.

White Goods (washers, dryers, water heaters) are allowed.

Tires must be off the rim.

Yard waste, tires and white goods must be separated from normal household trash, prior to delivery to the facility. Loads that are not separated will not be accepted.

Propane tanks, used oil filters, and other hazardous or special wastes are prohibited and will not be accepted. Unacceptable items found after unloading, if identifiable, are to be removed by the customer before the end of the business day.

Beverly Marcia Maxwell Arrested For Drug Trafficking

LOCAL WOMAN ARRETSED ON TRAFFICKING CHARGES

During the evening hours of June 7, 2024, Hendry County Deputies conducted a traffic stop on County Road 78, which resulted in the arrest of 58-year-old Beverly Marcia Maxwell of LaBelle.

While speaking with Maxwell, Hendry Deputies noticed a bulge in her clothing. Maxwell was found to have concealed in her clothing what was identified as a “crack pipe”. Hendry Deputies conducted a search of the vehicle and located a plastic baggie containing a white residue, which tested positive for cocaine.

Maxwell was taken into custody and transported to the Hendry County Sheriff’s Office. While enroute to Hendry County Jail, Maxwell was asked again if she had any additional drugs on her; she admitted to having concealed additional illegal narcotics on her body consisting of both cocaine and fentanyl. She turned them over to law enforcement.

In addition to this arrest, on June 8, 2024, additional narcotic charges were placed against Maxwell involving a previous investigation with Hendry Deputies.

Maxwell is charged with Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Possession of Cocaine, Possession of Methamphetamine, Possession of Controlled Substance and Trafficking in Fentanyl. She’s being held in the Hendry County Jail with no bond.

Terrence Henry Gardner Dies At 82

Terence Henry Gardner age 82 of Clewiston, Florida passed away at his home with his family around him on June 9, 2024.

Terence was born during WWII on May 10, 1942 in London, England to the late Henry William and the late Gwendolyn Grant Gardner. He married Maria “Mali” Soto and she survives him. He became an engineer worked around the World including places in United Kingdom, Greece, Sweden, Spain, USA (Kansas), South Africa, Italy, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, and finally working in Clewiston (USA). His two proudest projects were Wolf Creek in Kansas and United States Sugar Corporation “Break Thru” in Clewiston.

Terence leaves fond memories with his loving wife; Maria “Mali” Gardner of Clewiston, daughter; Samantha and her husband Jerimiah Brown of Sebastopol, California, son; Keith Gardner and his wife Kinvara of London, England, grandson; Wolfe Gardner of London, England, sister-in-law; Gillian Gardner (widow of Bob).

Terence was preceded in death by his brothers; Bob and Peter.

Terence's life will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 12, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. at Akin-Davis Funeral Home in Clewiston, where a visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m. The celebration will be presided by Pastor Chuck Pelham of New Harvest Church and Chaplain Rory of Vitas Hospice.

400 Seniors Receive Hurricane Prep Meal Kits In Fort Myers

FORT M YERS, FL. -- Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) and Community Cooperative distributed over 400+ hurricane preparedness meal kits to seniors across Lee County this week. 

Each of the meal kits, courtesy of FPL, contain water and a three-day supply of shelf-stable foods for breakfast, lunch and dinner should seniors be unable to leave their homes or receive home-delivered meals after a storm impacts the area.

State Buys 17,229 Acres In Hendry County's Devil Gardens

Devil’s Garden Florida Forever Project

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is celebrating the completion of a landmark purchase of 17,229 acres integral to the Florida Wildlife Corridor in Hendry County. This closing takes the conservation of the Devil’s Garden Florida Forever Project to over 60% complete.

“Often conservation happens in small increments, but today we are taking a giant step forward in a critical area thanks to this historic deal,” said DEP Secretary Shawn Hamilton. 

Stretching from the Caloosahatchee River to Big Cypress National Preserve, this vast acreage will conserve critical habitat for the endangered Florida panther and provide significant water quality protection. The natural systems of Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park and Big Cypress National Preserve are dependent on the water supplied from this area, and most of the Devil’s Garden project lies within the Western Everglades Restoration Project planning boundary.

The new parcel creates additional opportunities for public recreation in the Okaloacoochee Slough Wildlife Management Area and will be managed by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Through the Florida Forever Program, the state conserves land that provides environmental, recreational and preservation benefits, including water quality and quantity safeguards; resilience from storm impacts; habitat and species protections; and outdoor recreation opportunities.

Since 2019, the state has committed more than $1.4 billion to the Florida Forever program, including $950 million specifically for the Florida Wildlife Corridor. This consistent funding has enabled DEP to acquire over 265,000 acres for conservation since 2019, 92% of which are within the Florida Wildlife Corridor.

Obituaries - Raymond Clyde Crawford, Mirta Azanza, Patricia De La Cruz

Raymond Clyde Crawford, age 80 of LaBelle, Florida passed away on June 4, 2024, after a courageous battle of a lengthy illness.

Raymond was born September 15, 1943, in Pahokee, Florida. He was a kind child that carried on into his adulthood. Raymond was a Livestock Inspector for the State of Florida for many years before he retired. After retirement, he worked as a cowboy, helping whoever needed help with ranching. He was a former director of the Hendry County Cattleman’s Association, former Board of Director for the LaBelle Youth Livestock Association, and held a longtime membership with the Florida Cattleman's Association where he was a State Director and received the Honorary Director award in 2018.

Raymond was preceded in death by his parents Patricia and Raymond Reinbott and one brother Donald Jesse Reinbott. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather who will be greatly missed by his entire family and friends. 

 He is survived by and leaves fond memories with his loving wife Linda Snell Crawford, his sister Frances (Tommy) Parsons, brother Charles (Judy) Reinbott, & sister-in-law Sue Reinbott. Children: Donnie Crawford, Billy Joe (Andie) Tindall, Mark Tindall (Cristy Jacobson), Lori Brinker (Frank Robert Dana), and Nicole Tindall. Grandchildren: Blake (Allyson) Crawford, Bryson Crawford, Windall Tindall, Kindall (Hunter) Ward, Kaydence Tindall, Jesse Hubbard, Ashley (Austin) Lott, Kenzie Tindall, and Kaylee Dana. Great grandchildren: Austlynn Lott, Hayne Tindall, Irie Hubbard, Wyatt Hubbard, Troy Hubbard, and Steelie Ward, along with a host of other family and friends.

A celebration of Raymond’s life will be held on Friday, June 7, 2024, at the Pavilion of Ortona Cemetery in Moore Haven, FL where Pastor Mitchell Wills will preside. The family will receive friends for visitation at 9:30 a.m. with a service following at 10:00.

Bishop Richard Johnson Dies At 82

Bishop Richard Lynn Johnston, age 82, of North Fort Myers. FL passed away at Gulf Coast Medical Center on Friday, May 24, 2024.

Richard was born on April 8, 1942. In Montcalm, West Virginia to the late Rev. William Belcher and the late Una Johnston. Richard was a master electrician before he received the call to become a Minister of the Gospel. Richard Married Brenda Watkins on July 12, 1960, in Tazewell, Virginia, she survives him. Richard enjoyed riding his motorcycle, cheering on the Rays, but most of all he loved preaching the word of God. Richard was a loving and caring man who will be dearly missed by his entire family and church family.

Akin-Davis Funeral Homes Change Ownership

LABELLE, FL. -- According to the Florida Secretary of State office, Akin Davis Funeral Homes has dissolved the corporation, previously under Danial Akin's name.

The Secretary of State office says FPG Florida LLC of Winter Park, Fl. officially now is doing business Akin Davis Funeral Home, the 50 year old funeral home the late Cecil Akin started in LaBelle.

Foundation Partners of Florida LLC of Winter Park, Fl. has the funeral home license and is licensed as an "Apprentice/Training Agency" by the State of Florida under Donald Ray Campbell as the funeral director in charge. They also have the license for the Clewiston office.

The same company is doing business as Monarch Crematory under funeral directory Dean Ray Beck. And they also do business as Caloosa Memorials in LaBelle, selling monuments.

A sign of the change has been noticing recently that obituaries were being posted irregularly. The new website makes it a bit difficult to find local obituaries without searching through many pages.

 

The new Akin Davis website indicates "AFTERALL™ is the trade name of a network of licensed funeral, cremation, and cemetery providers associated with Foundation Partners Group, LLC."

That group either owns or manages hundreds of funeral homes around the country.

There are Akin Davis Funeral Homes in LaBelle, Clewiston and Fort Myers.

Florida Hurricane Tax Free Holiday This Week

Concurrent to the start of the 2024 hurricane season, Governor Ron DeSantis today urged residents to take advantage of the 14-day sales tax holiday for disaster preparation supplies. 

Governor DeSantis also announced a $7.5 million award to Lee County through Florida’s Job Growth Grant Fund to help rebuild and enhance the shrimp dock, which was destroyed during Hurricane Ian, at San Carolos Maritime Park. This dual-purpose facility will serve as an emergency operations site to launch barges, provide a place for shrimp vessels to dock, and transfer product to distribution trucks.

Right now, through June 14, the first of two Disaster Preparedness Sales Tax Holidays is happening, which means many disaster preparation items can be purchased tax-free, including:

Water
Shelf-stable canned food
Batteries
Flashlights
Reusable ice
Pet items
Toys
Portable power banks and more

Other important items that are tax-free include:

Portable generators

Tarps or other waterproof sheeting

Smoke detectors and alarms
Fire extinguishers
Carbon monoxide detectors
Portable radios less than $50

And since pets are part of the family, too, several items such as pet leashes, beds, wet and dry food, and over-the-counter pet medications can also be purchased tax-free through June 14.

Robert’s Best, (Part 10, Excerpt 95)

This is a new story. Robert’s Best is a sail boat. Grandfather Roberts is going to sail it on the Intercostal waterway from Texas to Key West, Florida. That will be an adventure. Then his grandchildren and their parents will come to Key West on a visit. There will be a lot of funny happenings until the criminals from a previous story get into action. A side note is that a 1935 antique Chris-Craft Model 557 Cabin Cruiser is going to play an important part in the rest of the story. Grandfather Roberts has just arrived in Key West, docked his boat, and met Honest Dave with his 1935 antique restored Christ-Craft Cabin Cruiser.

Roberts’ Best

“Oh, hi, didn’t see you there. About forty days out from Galveston,” I answered.

“Ran the Intercostal, did you?” he asked.

“Yes, sure did! Moving to this island, if they’ll have me. By the way, that’s some boat you have there. Did you restore it yourself?”

“Yep. It’s a nineteen thirty-five, twenty-eight foot Chris-Craft Model 557 Cabin Cruiser.* Got it off a guy near Homestead, Florida. He had it all tore apart. It took me and a couple of friends two years to restore it. I wasn’t in a hurry. Just like you see me now.”

“I like antiques. In fact that’s how I make my money. Honest Dave, the antique man. I refurnish and sell antiques of all kinds. If it’s old, and I like it, I buy it. If I don't want to keep it, I sell it, for a profit, naturally.”

I stepped up onto the dock, Honest Dave did the same.We shook hands.

“Dave Crench, pleased to make your acquaintance.”

Dave was of average height and somewhat muscular. His black hair was hanging out under the cap, but with his long sideburns, I could imagine he looked like Elvis.
“I’m Tom Roberts of the twenty-eight foot sail’n sloop Roberts’ Best. I’m proud to meet you Honest Dave.”

How about a tour of your Chris-Craft? It’s not every day I get this opportunity.”

“Tom, I thought you would never ask. Step right in there.”

“Wow! This mahogany wood is pristine. I like the Captain’s quarters. Even a mahogany and brass six-spoke ship’s wheel, and your chrome trim shines,” I said admiringly.

“It wasn’t easy. Lots of sanding and refinishing to the mahogany. Some of the chrome fittings had to be replated.”

“How many will she sleep, Dave?”

“Take a look up front for yourself. Could squeeze in three if you had to. Not to mention the cross-the-transom cushion in the stern.”

“Dave, what about power?”

“Well, Tom, that is what I like,” he said as he pulled back the engine’s cover. “This is a cruiser, not a speedster runabout. The in-line, six cylinder flathead is an original Chris-Craft ninety-five horse power “K” engine. It’s all she needs. It’s easy on fuel but will still move out because it’s got a lot of torque.”

“A great boat, Dave!” I complimented.

“What’s your plans Tom? I don’t know about you, but I’m hungry. I know it’s early, but my stomach thinks it’s late! I’ve been here about four days. I know a couple of good eating places only a couple of blocks from here. It’s good, it’s early, because we can eat and get back off the street before the town gets rowdy. What do you say? I’m buying. There is a small restaurant you might like.”

“That was some good food. Thanks, Dave. I’m going to turn in. I had a long and busy morning. See you tomorrow.”

Next morning, Key West docks in the Bight.

I poked my head out of my cabin.

“Hey Tom, so you're an early riser like me. Come on over. Had your coffee yet? I’ve got mine and yours ready to go. How about some eggs?”

“I’m coming right over, Dave. It’s alright if I just call you Dave and leave off the Honest part?”

“Yep, Tom, that will be fine. Don’t want the locals to get any ideas. Have a seat right there, and I’ll rustle up your grub. Where you heading today, Tom?”

“Thanks, Dave. I’ve got to find me a place to live. I have this respiratory and allergy condition. It came from and was aggravated by the Houston pollution and the high humidity.”

“What’s wrong with living on your boat?”

“Well, Dave, a boat’s fine, but I’m used to having a sturdy footing most of the time. A boat is great for recreation and getting away from it all for a few hours. But think, I’ve been the last thirty-eight days on the water. No, I need some land sleep.”

“What you looking for, Tom? I’ve been looking around a lot. I could guide you around some, or at least show you the sights and all that I know.”

“Well, to answer your first question. I need a good ocean breeze, no pollution. The answer to your second question is, yes. Show me what you know about this here island.”

“You’ll need to get your walking shoes on and come back and we’ll start out!”

“Tom, if what you need is a lot of breeze, that means the Atlantic. Also since you like antiques, you need an old house. You’ve come to the right place, this island is full of them, real fine ones, and historic. You need a two-story with two to three porches on the second floor. Let’s hail a touring carriage. Here’s a horse and buggy, coming down the street right now. That way we can see everything at a slow pace. We need to get to the other side of the island. You need covered porches. They call them verandas here. It’s when the porch roof is a continuation of the house roof.”
“Hey, old timer,” Dave said to the carriage driver. “We need a ride. My friend here is looking for an old house. It’s got to be on the Atlantic. He needs porches on the second floor. What’ve you got?”

The carriage driver said, “Wooah Bessie,” as he pulled tightly on the reins. “Well Sar, I know a dead-end street right on the Atlantic. It’s called United. I think I saw one for sale on that street when I was passing by.”

They stepped up into the carriage. “Let’s go, Bessie, ge’up!” the driver said as he lightly snapped the reins.

“Driver, how could you be just pass’n by, when it’s a dead-end street?” Dave asked with a smile in his voice.

“I must confess, Sir, there’s this real pretty Miss living on that street, and you might have guessed it. I’m sure sweet on her!”

“Tell you what, oh by the way, what’s your name, driver?” I asked.

“Franklin, Sir.”

“I’ll tell you what, Franklin, if this is the right house, you will get a tip big enough to take your sweetheart out to dine.”

“Thank you kindly, Sir.”

“Franklin, please take us through old town on the way over, so my friend Tom here can see just how historic and unique Key West is.”

We went west out of the Key West Bight. Three blocks and Franklin said, “Sir, I’m going to take a short three-block around-about here and show your friend here Front Street and Old Mallory Square. It’s the real old seaport front.”

“There now, we’re gon-a-go all the way down Whitehead Street. It’s about eleven blocks to the ocean and our turn. We’ll go right past the oldest house, Hemingway's house, the light house, and a lot of other interesting sights.”

Roadwork On Port LaBelle Eucalyptus Blvd June 4

LABELLE, FL. -- Please be advised that beginning on Tuesday, June 4, 2024, Hendry County Road & Bridge will be conducting roadwork to replace culvert pipes under SW Eucalyptus Blvd.

SW Eucalyptus Blvd will be closed to through traffic between NW Beechwood Circle and NE Beechwood Circle in order to complete the repairs.

Work is expected to take 10 days to complete.

Operations will occur between the hours of 8am-5pm.

Motorists should expect possible delays for the duration of the project and allow extra time for their commute.

Please note that this schedule is tentative and subject to change. The Hendry County Engineering Department will notify of any changes.
