LABELLE, FL. -- Charles Townsend III, of Fort Denaud was southbound on CR-78A approaching a stop sign at the intersection of SR-80 Monday at 12:05 p.m. as a motorcycle driven by Robert Alan Baker, 63, of Lehigh Acres was eastbound in the left turn lane on SR-80 at the intersection of CR-78A.
Baker turned left as the truck driven by Townsend failed to yield the right of way from a stop sign. As a result, the front of the truck struck the left side of the motorcycle which continued northeast overturning causing the driver to separate from the cycle.
The truck came to a controlled stop in the paved median while the motorcycle came to final rest in the inside westbound lane of SR-80. Baker was not wearing a helmet according to the FHP.
