Bear Strike On I-75 Closes Traffic For Hours

FORT MYERS, FL. --  At 5:47 a.m. Thursday a Ford F-250 and Mack truck were traveling southbound in the center lane of I-75, south of Bonita Beach Road, both ended up striking a bear crossing the interstate highway.

A Nissan Maxima, Mini Cooper, and Kia Optima were traveling southbound in the outside travel lane of I-75, south of Bonita Beach Road.

The Ford struck a black bear that was crossing the roadway in the center lane of I-75. The vehicle pulled over and came to a complete stop within the outside shoulder.

The Nissan also struck the bear in the outside lane, and then pulled over within the
outside shoulder of I-75. The Mack truck entered the outside lane to avoid the vehicle in front of
him, and struck the bear, then overturned, and the dump's trailer struck the Nissan. After impact, the Mack truck slid south, and struck the trailer of the Ford.

The Mini Cooper and the Kia then struck the bear in the outside lane, and came to a final stop in the outside shoulder.

The roadway was cleared at 9:35 AM.
