Two Injured In Hendry Crash

A 1998 white Freightliner CMV hauling an empty trailer was traveling south on US-27 in the outside lane approaching the intersection of Farm Drake Road Thursday in Hendry County.

A 2019 silver Kia SUV was traveling south on US-27 in the inside lane approaching the intersection of Farm Drake Road.

The truck veered left taking up both southbound lanes of US-27 as the driver of the Kia, Bruce Newton of Bartow steered right to avoid colliding with the Freightliner. The truck made an abrupt right turn onto Farm Drake Road directly in front of the Kia. As a result, the front of the Kia collided with the rear of the trailer being hauled by the truck.

After the collision, the Kia came to a final rest in the inside lane of US-27 with the front facing west.

The truck came to a controlled stop in the dirt entrance to Farm Drake Road with the front facing south. It's driver Naud Margarito of Belle Glade had no reported injuries. Newton was transported by
ground to Hendry County Regional Hospital and was later airlifted to Lee Memorial Hospital, to
be treated for incapacitating injuries.

Passenger Linda Newton was airlifted from the scene to Lee Memorial Hospital and is listed in critical but stable condition.
