Be Safe! - Halloween Tips

The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles and its division of the Florida Highway Patrol is urging motorists and pedestrians to exercise an abundance of caution this Halloween by being safe, sober, and seen. Motorists should always use caution when behind the wheel and never drive impaired as buzzed driving is drunk driving.
“On Halloween, communities will see an increase in pedestrians on the roadways during the evening hours where visibility is low,” said FLHSMV Executive Director Terry L. Rhodes. “Motorists and parents must remain alert and vigilant to ensure everyone has a happy and safe holiday.”
FHP and law enforcement partners are working to make the Halloween holiday safe for everyone, discouraging impaired driving and increasing visibility of law enforcement on the roadways.
“There will be zero tolerance for impaired drivers this Halloween,” said Colonel Gene Spaulding, Director of the FHP. “If you plan to celebrate with alcohol this Halloween, never get behind the wheel – always designate a sober driver.”
Children will focus on the excitement of Halloween and forget about safety. FLHSMV strongly encourages parents, caregivers, and motorists to take extra care in safeguarding children. Follow these tips to avoid a scare this Halloween:
Motorists:
  • Pay attention and reduce distractions; turn off the radio and put down the phone.
  • Slow down and use caution. Costumes may impair a child’s ability to see and hear approaching cars, preventing them from getting out of the roadway quickly.
  • Watch for children walking in the street, especially if there are no sidewalks.
  • Enter and exit driveways slowly and always check behind your vehicle before backing.
  • Keep an eye out for trick-or-treaters who may suddenly dart into traffic from between parked cars.
Parents and Trick-or-Treaters:
  • Be seen! Carry a flashlight, wear bright clothing and put reflective tape on costumes and goody bags.
  • Use sidewalks whenever possible. If sidewalks are not available, walk facing traffic as close to the curb as possible.
  • Remind children to never run out into the street or cross between parked cars.
  • Cross streets at crosswalks or intersections. Make eye contact with drivers before crossing in front of them.
  • Be aware of surroundings. Don’t wear headphones or text while walking.
  • Children should not trick-or-treat unsupervised. Walk with your trick-or-treaters and hold the hands of young children. Review pedestrian safety with teens if they trick-or-treat without supervision.

Paying Tribute To Passing Of Alton Mims

LABELLE, FL. -- Gene McAvoy, Associate Director for Stakeholder Relations at the University of Florida IFAS Southwest Florida Research and Education Center today wrote:

"It is with great sadness that I note the passing of Alton Louis Mims on Oct. 26 2019.

"Louis was a very important part of the S. Florida Agricultural community. He was the owner of Mims Welding in Immokalee and LaBelle.

"His specialty was building a discharge pump that could move a lot of water out of a flat woods farm field very quickly.

"The 24” Mims pump was also special because it was a free standing pump that could installed and pumping water out of a flooded pepper or tomato field in 15 minutes.

"Louis or his son Preston would always be there to deliver or just move pumps after a heavy rain typically in the middle of the night with one of their big 6 wheel drive winch trucks. Just like Hotshot’s father, Louis Franklin Mims, (that moved his family from Pahokee in 1963) he normally had 10-15 of these pumps built and ready for delivery to the local farmers 24 hours a day.

"Sources indicate that several times when a farmer didn’t have the money to pay him he’d say “don’t worry about that just get the water out now and pay me when you can.”

"Louis was a long time resident of Immokalee, Felda and LaBelle area."

Gene McAvoy is Regional Vegetable Extension Agent IV Emeritus and President of the National Association of County Agricultural Agents

Obituaries - Nathan Snow, Alton Mims

Nathan Robert Snow, 32 years of age, died October 24, 2019 at 10:10 PM.

A lifelong LaBelle resident, Nate was an intellectual and questioned everything
and did his best to find answers. He both played and wrote music, read and wrote stories, and
loved to retell his stories to me in the voice of a circa 1800 hundreds British world traveler. Many conversations with his family consisted of nothing more than quotes from often watched movies.

From a very young age he could not only read, but could out play his big brother's friends at video games. Nathan's friends were like family to him and he loved us all. Not many knew him or understood him. Depression and other life woes kept him apart from most everyone. They missed knowing an amazing man-child.

Even though he knew his time was short, while we were at Hope Hospice he asked me, "Why are you paying so much attention to me all of a sudden?" I answered," You've never seen snow but it is beautiful. We should stop to appreciate that beauty before it melts away. You are my red bearded Snowman. I want to soak in all of your beauty that I can before you melt away." He seemed to appreciate that thought. He will forever be in our hearts.

He was preceded in death by his father Daniel L. Snow Sr. and is survived by his mother, Carol Hedges Moore (Jerry) and brother Daniel L. Snow Jr.

Aid Available To Homebound Veterans And Spouses

LABELLE, FL. -- Veterans and survivors who are eligible for a VA pension and require the aid and attendance of another person, or are housebound, may be eligible for additional monetary payment. These benefits are paid in addition to monthly pension, and they are not paid without eligibility to Pension.

The Aid & Attendance (A&A) increased monthly pension amount may be added to your monthly pension amount if you meet one of the following conditions:

You require the aid of another person in order to perform personal functions required in everyday living, such as bathing, feeding, dressing, attending to the wants of nature, adjusting prosthetic devices, or protecting yourself from the hazards of your daily environment
You are bedridden, in that your disability or disabilities requires that you remain in bed apart from any prescribed course of convalescence or treatment
You are a patient in a nursing home due to mental or physical incapacity
Your eyesight is limited to a corrected 5/200 visual acuity or less in both eyes; or concentric contraction of the visual field to 5 degrees or less

This increased monthly pension amount may be added to your monthly pension amount when you are substantially confined to your immediate premises because of permanent disability.

Since Aid and Attendance and Housebound allowances increase the pension amount, people who are not eligible for a basic pension due to excessive income may be eligible for pension at these increased rates. A Veteran or surviving spouse may not receive Aid and Attendance benefits and Housebound benefits at the same time.

Caloosa Baptist Partners To Cancel Medical Bills

LABELLE, FL. -- Within a few weeks, 350 families in Hendry County will begin receiving
notification that their overdue medical debts have been satisfied in full. This is but the first step in what organizers hope can be extended to more than 20,000 SW Florida families in the coming months, amounting to $28.7 million in debt relief.

Of the 11 SWFL counties covered in the campaign Hendry County is the first to have all of its debt meeting the criteria below PAID IN FULL  The organization bought $500,000 in overdue debts from the collections companies which covered 350 different families. In Glades county they are buying $35,000 in past due medical bills to benefit 60 families.

The campaign is being spearheaded by a group of area churches calling themselves Christians for SWFL (christiansforswfl.com), working through a national non-profit organization called RIP Medical Debt (ripmedicaldebt.org).

RIP locates and buys the debt from bill collectors on behalf of the local group—for pennies on the dollar—and subsequently cancels the debt in its entirety. Since it’s a detached third-party and a 501(c)(3) charity, there is no income reporting required or tax implications for those being helped. It’s a no-strings-attached gift to the beneficiary, with no future obligation to pay the debt.

Recipients are chosen anonymously among those with medical debt who:

• Make less than twice the federal poverty level,
• Have out-of-pocket medical expenses totaling 5% or more of their annual income, or
• Are insolvent (debts exceed assets).

Notices will be sent in bright yellow envelopes, emblazoned with a red headline that reads “Your debt paid by SWFL Churches!”

United Way Campaign Co-Chairs: Mr. Tommy Perry, President of Johnson-Prewitt & Associates and Mr. Scott Bass, Glades County Schools Superintendent will lead the campaign with a goal of $340,120. This is a 1.6% increase over last year’s goal.

The theme of this year’s campaign is “One Way, United Way.” In regard to co-chairing this year’s campaign, “I am excited to partner with Mr. Tommy Perry to lead the Campaign for United Way in Hendry and Glades Counties this year! The funds raised in our area are so important to the agencies that support our School District”, says Mr. Scott Bass, Glades County Schools Superintendent and Hendry/Glades Campaign Co-Chair. “Agencies like the YMCA, which provide After School Programs and Healthy Families for Parenting Support Groups. Our United Way truly benefits the programs right here in our community”. Additionally, Mr. Tommy Perry, President, Johnson-Prewitt & Associates and Hendry/Glades Campaign Co-Chair says, “United Way is a valuable partner in our community. I am looking forward to working with Mr. Scott Bass to raise much-needed funds for our United Way Partner Agencies. We would like to encourage everyone in the two county area to participate in the Campaign through donations and volunteerism.”

All money raised in the United Way campaign stays in the local community to help support the local human service network. United Way Partner Agencies and initiatives include: The Alvin A. Dubin Alzheimer’s Resource Center, Abuse Counseling & Treatment, Harry Chapin Food Bank, Healthy Families, and United Way 211, to mention a few. These agencies serve a diverse range of needs in our community such as nurturing children and youth, strengthening families, and meeting critical needs like helping the elderly and disabled live independently, and empowering communities by bringing health and human services to neighborhoods.

In addition to raising funds for human service organizations in our community, the United Way promotes partnerships and collaborations among agencies and initiatives, helping them to work together focusing on issues and solutions that continue to improve lives.
