How To Keep Your Energy Bills Lower

Energy Efficiency Day is Wednesday, Oct. 2, and Florida Power & Light Company is sharing easy tips for customers to do around the house to help manage energy usage and find ways to save all season long.

Bianca Soriano, FPL spokesperson says, “It’s Energy Efficiency Day. At FPL, we want to help customers keep their bills low, and a great way to do that is to be energy efficient at home. An easy way is to set your A/C between 75 to 78 degrees to save on your cooling costs.

"Also, use cold water when doing your laundry and use ceiling fans to cool you when in a room. Turn them off however, they only cool people not rooms."

The Tips

Cooling your home makes up more than 50% of your bill. Set A/C to a comfortable temperature and avoid changing it more than two degrees at a time for max savings.

Choose your dishwasher, which uses 1/3 less water, and skip the pre-rinse. Instead, use the rinse cycle until it's time to clean a full load.

About 90% of your laundry energy consumption comes from heating the dryer. Use your dryer’s auto sensor function to conserve energy by not over-drying your clothes. Remember to clean the lint filter before every load to dry your clothes faster.

Take advantage of FPL’s free tools and resources like the House of Savings Challenge where you can learn more ways to reduce your energy usage and compete for a chance to win a prize pack worth $150!

Alva Man Sentenced To 24 Years In Drug Case

Fort Myers, Florida – U.S. District Judge Thomas P. Barber has sentenced Richardson Bien Aime (35, Alva) to 24 years and 4 months in federal prison for possessing with the intent to distribute 50 grams or more of pure methamphetamine and possessing firearms as a convicted felon. Bien Aime pleaded guilty on June 11, 2024. Earlier this year, his wife, Christi Bien Aime (31, Alva) was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison in a separate but related federal case involving 400 grams or more of fentanyl and 500 grams or more of methamphetamine.

According to court documents, law enforcement began investigating Richardson Bien Aime in August 2023 after learning from a source that he was obtaining large shipments of methamphetamine from California via the U.S. Mail. During the investigation, law enforcement purchased methamphetamine, crack cocaine, and fentanyl from Bien Aime during multiple undercover transactions at his Alva residence. Investigators also seized a parcel from the mail stream containing more than two pounds of pure methamphetamine destined for Bien Aime.

In November 2023, law enforcement executed a search warrant at Bien Aime’s residence and seized more than a half a pound of methamphetamine, $6,000 in cash, and two firearms. Bien Aime, who had a lengthy criminal history including convictions for manslaughter and 10 felony drug offenses, was prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition under federal law.

This case was investigated by the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the United States Postal Inspection Service. It was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Michael V. Leeman.

Florida Keys' Watercolor Kapers by Bob Kranich

Florida Keys’ Watercolor Kapers
by Bob Kranich

Robert’s Best, (Part 16, Excerpt 101)

This is a new story. Robert’s Best is a sail boat. Grandfather Roberts has sailed it on the Intercostal waterway from Texas to Key West, Florida. His grandchildren and their parents have come to Key West on a visit. There will be a lot of funny happenings until the criminals from a previous story get into action. A side note is that a 1935 antique Chris-Craft Model 557 Cabin Cruiser is going to play an important part in the rest of the story. Grandfather Roberts has met Honest Dave and had a tour of his Chris-Craft. Honest Dave is going back to Homestead to check on his businesses. He will come back. Grandfather Roberts has moved into his new house on the Atlantic and we will get introduced to the A. M. Adams Turtle Schooner soon. The criminals are starting to get involved.

“Ok, everyone, put on your life vests,” I instructed.

“Yah, everyone. You too, Suzie!” Harold Junior put in.

“I know. Smart guy!” She answered.

“Now, we’ll motor around at first. I want to go out of the Bight, and then we’ll head south and look at the Navy Base to see what we can see!” I said. “Keep your eyes on the land there everyone. What do you see?”

“There it is!” Harold Junior screamed, “It’s Mother Ship, a tender. Look at the one, two, three submarines.”

“Ok, smart guy, we know you can count,” Suzie said.

“Now, we’re going to go around the southwest corner of the island. You can see the old Civil War red brick fort there. I pointed, “It’s called Fort Zachary Taylor.”

“Are there civil war soldiers in it now? Can we go see it?” Harold Junior asked.

“Now it’s abandoned. But it’s a National Park and Monument. We may go and see it next week, Harold Junior. You and me.”

“Look, I see the Southern most house!”

“Now, Harold Junior, hold on to those rails. Don’t jump around,” Harold Senior warned.

“We’re in the Hawk Channel now. Let’s put up the sails. Harold Junior and Senior, up the sails, man the sail cranks.”

“Like this, Daddy,” Harold Junior proudly showed everyone, since he had learned how to raise the sails at Lake Houston.

Now we’ll just turn around and sail back to where we came from.” I cautioned. “Watch the boom as it comes around.”

We sailed back, dropped the sails, and motored into the harbor. Franklin and Bessie were there waiting. The two guys were gone.

The next day, mid-morning:

“Dad, We’re going to drive up to Miami, drop off the rental station wagon at the airport, and fly back. It’s non-stop on a Turbo-prop. We’ll call when we get in,” Harold Senior informed everyone.

“What’s a Turbo-prop?” Harold Junior asked.

“I was going to ask the same question,” I said.

I guess it’s a new type of aircraft engine,” Harold Senior answered, “Supposed to be pretty fast.”

“You-all have a safe trip,” I said, as they all hugged, that is all except Suzie and Harold Junior.

“Now, Harold Junior, mind your Grandfather, and I love you,” Mary said as she hugged him.

“Yes, Mom,” he answered.

They all got in the vehicle, waved and drove away. We watched as they turn left onto Whitehead Street, go to Truman Ave, turn right, heading towards Roosevelt Boulevard and straight out to U. S. One.

“Junior, let’s go in, clean up a bit, do some wash, eat, and we’ll make some plans.”

“Grandfather, couldn’t we eat and make plans, instead of cleaning?”

“I wish we could, Junior, but we don’t have a housekeeper. We are the cleaners.”

Harold Junior was playing out on the porch, in the back. “Grandfather, you need a porch swing like you have back at the cottage.”

“Sounds like a good idea, Harold Junior. Tell you what, we need two, one in the front and one in the back here. We’ll order them today, and see if they can put them in tomorrow. We’ll have them put on the ground floor. I don’t want you launching off into space!”

“It’s going to be fun, Grandfather.”

“Give me a few minutes, Harold. I’m going to be on the phone.”

Harold Junior didn’t answer. He was playing around in the backyard, digging in the sand, and rolling a green husked coconut around.

“Dave Crench speaking, Antiques my specialty.”

“Dave, that you? This is Tom, Tom Roberts.”

“Oh hi, Tom. Excuse me, but I always have to put in my advertising specialty. How you doing?”

“My grandson is here. The family left this morning.”

“You want to kick around some, Tom?” Dave asked. “I did some real neat work on my Chris-Craft. Wait till you see it! Tell you what, I got a few business deals to close. I’ll leave tomorrow afternoon and get there the day after, afternoon late. Don’t want to hurry my old antique. See you at the Bight. Oh, by–the–way, what’s your phone number? I’ll write it down.”

“295-8763,” I answered. “Give me a call and your time of arrival and we’ll meet you with Franklin’s carriage.”

“Who was that, Grandfather Roberts?”

“A guy named Dave. He’s coming down in his Chris-Craft Cruiser day after tomorrow, in the afternoon.”
“What’s a Chris-Craft Cruiser, Grandfather?”

“Instead of trying to describe it, I’ll show it to you when he gets here. I’ll want to tell you, it’s a cool looking boat. Now, I’m going to call the hardware store to see about the porch swings.”

I dialed the Island Hardware. There was a buzz, a click, and the line seemed to go dead. I was just about to hang up and try again when, I heard, “You called the Island Hardware?”

“Why, yes. Is this it?”

“What can we do for you?”

“I need a couple of porch swings. I would like them delivered and installed tomorrow morning, if possible.”

“Let me check, Sir.” It took a long time, but finally the person came back on. “Sorry sir, had to check stock. Tomorrow in the morning. Two porch swings installed. Your name and address sir?

“Tom Roberts, seven United Street, Atlantic side. Dead end street, yellow with white trim. 295-8763.”

“Thank you, Sir. Your installer will be Frank. About ten am.”

I noticed a strange click as he hung up.

Obituaries - Janet Baker Shelton, Lori Mae Olivarez

Lori Mae Olivarez
January 6th, 1965 - September 6th, 2024

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Lori Mae Olivarez, a beloved wife, mother, daughter, aunt, sister, and grandmother. Lori went to meet our Lord on September 8th, 2024, in Labelle, Florida, at the age of 59. She was born on January 6th, 1965, in Washington, Pennsylvania, to Walter and Joyce Sherman, who instilled in her an abiding love of the Lord.

She expressed this love through song and loved nothing more than lifting her voice in praise. She was united in marriage to her adored husband, Homero Olivarez, who was by her side until the day she was called home.

Lori dedicated her life to many passions. She was as a talented hair stylist, with a knack for drawing out physical beauty among the curls and strands. However, it was behind a microphone on the stage of a church where her own beauty shined bright and effortless. Her voice, soulful and authentic, betrayed her petite frame. It was common to hear gasps from her audience at the strength and energy flowing from this slight woman as she sang her opening notes. She was renowned for her beautiful renditions of classic and contemporary gospel songs and had a particular fondness for Karen Wheaton.

Despite her striking beauty, Lori was known for her fun-loving, goofball nature, which endeared her to everyone she encountered.

Lori leaves behind a legacy of love and family, survived by her mother, Joyce Sherman; her devoted husband, Homero Olivarez; her daughters Amanda Chapman, Vanessa Chapman, and Tiffany Freeman; her siblings Billy Sherman, Linda Brown, Karen Sherman, Jeffrey Sherman, David Sherman, and Timmy Sherman; and her treasured grandchildren, Aurora Chapman, Sophi Brewer, Jonah Walker, Layne Love, and Wyatt Love.

She will be missed by many friends and extended family members including her beloved stepchildren with her husband Homer. She is mourned by the fathers of her own children, Elwood Chapman and Cliff Freeman as well, a testament to the love they shared that only changed but never vanished.

She was preceded in death by her adoring father, Walter Sherman, her precious brother, Gary Sherman, her beloved grandchild, Alyna Gonzalez, and her cherished nephew, Brett Sherman. She is now reunited with those she missed so dearly.

A celebration of Lori's life will be held at the Akin Davis Funeral Home in Labelle, Florida, on Monday, September 16th, 2024, at 10:00 AM. Friends and family are invited to join in honoring her memory and sharing their condolences. She is surely among that choir most high. May she rest in peace, embraced by the eternal harmonies of heaven.

Janet Baker Shelton
March 7th, 1949 - September 7th, 2024

Janet Baker Shelton, born on March 7, 1949, in Cookeville, TN, passed away peacefully in Fort Myers, FL, on September 7, 2024. Her life, spanning 75 inspiring years, was marked by an unwavering dedication to family, community, and an abundance of kindness.

Janet's legacy is etched in the hearts of her loved ones. She is survived by her devoted son, Scott Shropshire; loving daughter, Teresa Ellis; cherished grandchildren Jordan Libak, Robert Pavlinovic, Justin Shropshire and three step grandchildren Adam, Ian and Sydnee Ellis; and her adored great-granddaughters Hali, Blair, and Bria Libak and step grandsons Ezekiel and Byron Ellis. Her siblings, Carol Quillin, Jerry Baker, Jimmy Baker, Larry Baker and John Baker, also mourn her passing, as do countless friends and community members whose lives she touched.

Known for her kindness and generosity, Janet was always eager to help anyone in need, demonstrating an energetic spirit that uplifted everyone around her. She embraced life with a zest that was both inspiring and contagious.

Janet’s interests were as vibrant as her personality. She had a passion for singing, blessed with a voice that could move souls and lift spirits. Antiquing was another of her beloved pastimes, finding joy in the stories and history of each piece she collected. She loved spending time at the beach, taking long contemplative walks along the river, and cherishing every moment spent with her grandchildren.

A celebration of her life will be held on Friday, September 20th, with a viewing at 10:00 AM, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM at Ortona Cemetery, 8898 W 78, Moore Haven, FL 33471.

Janet Baker Shelton's life was a testament to the power of kindness, generosity, and an energetic spirit. Her voice may have quieted, but her legacy will continue to resonate through the lives she touched.

May we all find inspiration in Janet’s journey, carrying forward the light and warmth she so generously shared.

Hendry County School District Response:

Good afternoon, parents and guardians. The Hendry County School District has received several Fortify Florida tips today. First, let me start by saying thank you so much for being vigilant about school Safety and reporting the information you are hearing or seeing. Your child's safety is Mr. Swindle's and the Hendry County school district's number one priority.

We continue to improve the security of our schools with or without threats being made. The Hendry County Sheriff's Office is investigating the tips we received today. These tips are contained in the West District of Hendry County. Currently, we have no evidence to support this as a valid threat.

These threats are a form of terrorism that is meant to disrupt your child's education. We must stay vigilant and investigate all possible threats to our children, but we must not allow this terrorism to affect our children's education.

The Hendry County Sheriff's Office, in collaboration with the Hendry County School Board, will continue to put security measures in place to keep our children safe.

We will have extra law enforcement presence and use weapons detection systems at several locations in the district. If there is a threat to our students, we will let you know and take the appropriate measures to eliminate the threat. As always, continue the strategy of "see something, say something," if you have any questions or concerns, don't hesitate to contact your District, school administration, or the Director of School Safety. We will let you know when we receive more information.

Florida Keys' Watercolor Kapers by Bob Kranich

Florida Keys’ Watercolor Kapers
by Bob Kranich

Robert’s Best, (Part 15, Excerpt 100)

Roberts’ Best

“That was a great meal. Let’s get on with our tour. We’ll walk down to the carriage there,” I pointed.

We loaded up, and Franklin said, “Next is the pirate house right there.”

“Do pirates live in there now? Will they capture us?”

“Now, Harold Junior, settle down. That is where some pirates lived a long time ago,” Harold Senior commented.

“Now we’re going to go about four blocks to Front Street by the main square and docks. That is where the aquarium is. You are about to see lots of tropical fish,” Franklin informed them.

They all came out of the aquarium, “See, Grandfather Roberts, I want to catch one of those sharks, only bigger. Why didn’t they have a sailfish? There was just a dead stuffed one on the wall.”

“Well, Junior, a sailfish is a game fish. It would be hard to keep one in an aquarium tank,” I answered the best I could.

“Yah stupid!” Suzie broke in.

“I’m not stupid,” Harold Junior replied.

“Yes you are. Yah...Yah...NaYah!”she teased.

“That’s enough! Both of you!” Mary commanded.
They loaded up, and Franklin asked, “How about the Turtle Crawls and the Bight? They can see where you gots your sail’n ship.”

Another good idea. Thanks Franklin,” I agreed.

“Look! I see Roberts’ Best.” Harold Junior stood up and pointed.

“Careful, Harold Junior. Sit down or you will fall off of the carriage,” Harold Senior warned.

“First we are going to look at the Turtle Crawls,” I said.

“Look at those big turtles swimming around. I would like to ride one!” Harold Junior exclaimed.

“You couldn’t ride one of those big turtles. They would bite your foot off, and then sit on top of you,” Suzie teased.

“Could too!”

“No, you couldn’t’!“

“Now both of you settle down,” Mary had to intervene, again.

“What is that boat with the big masts? Is it a pirate ship?”
Harold asked as he pointed at the sailing ship tied up to the dock on the other side of the turtle pens.

“Harold Junior, that is the A. M. Adams. It’s a turtle ship out of the Cayman islands. It catches these turtles and brings them to Key West to the Turtle Crawls,” I said.

“I still think it looks like a pirate ship,” Harold Junior insisted.

They walked over and out on the dock where the Roberts’ Best was tied up.

“It looks like she did okay on the Gulf trip, Dad,” Harold Senior commented.

“She is a good boat and a real fine sailor. Also that diesel engine really saved me!”

“Are we going to go out to catch a sailfish, Grandfather Roberts?” Harold Junior asked enthusiastically.

“Not today, Sonny,” Harold Senior put in.

“Now we’re going to get Franklin and Bessie to take us back to the house. We need a rest. Tomorrow we’ll take a sailboat ride around the harbor and part of Key West,” I said sympathetically. “We’ll fish another day after your family leaves to go back home. You’re going to stay with me a couple of weeks, Junior.”

“O...k, Grandfather Roberts,” Harold Junior sighed.

“Home, Franklin. You and Bessie have been superb! We all want to thank you.” As everyone said with me, “Yes thank you, very nice, great!”

“Old Bessie and me just wants to help. You have been my greatest customers.”

“And friends,” I put in. “Now tomorrow we’ll need a ride to the boat in the morning. How about 9:30, Franklin?”

“Yes sir, we’ll be there,” Franklin answered, as Bessie shook her head and blew air from her nostrils. It was a coincidence, but they all laughed.

Franklin and Bessie were right on time the next morning

“There they are!” Harold Junior yelled.

“Not so loud, pipsqueak!” his sister commanded.

They loaded up, and thirty minutes later they were on the other side of the island at the Key West Bight.

“Thanks, Franklin. Check back in a couple of hours, around twelve. It’s just going to be a harbor tour, a short trip.”

“Yes sir, Mister Roberts. See you-all then.”

Unknown to Tom:
As they loaded up they didn’t notice two guys in Panama hats, light pants, and Hawaiian shirts sitting nonchalantly on a dock-side park bench.

“There they are, Vince. The whole family down from Texas. This old guy, Roberts, must have some dough. He’s got a nice sailboat, buys a house cash, pays for the whole family to come down here, and doesn't work. Might be easy pick-in's.”

“Frank, check into it. What else you got? Any new boats come in?”

Obituary - Ela Mai Woods

Eula Mae Woods
May 23rd, 1924 - September 1st, 2024

Mrs. Eula Mae Woods was born on May 23, 1924, in McCormick, South Carolina to Bishop and Josephine Crawford Wardlaw. She was the oldest of seven children.

When Eula was 15, she and her parents began to study the Bible with Jehovah’s Witnesses. In 1940 at the age of 16 Eula dedicated her life to Jehovah and was baptized. She served Jehovah faithfully for 84 years. During that time, she never missed a “Memorial Celebration”

She would tell you with a smile, that she had “no regrets and that is has truly been a life well lived.” She pioneered whenever she could and was always happy to be used by Jehovah. In her early twenties she met and married the love of her life, Caldwell Woods. They had two children, Caldwell, Jr and Mary Helen. They loved their children and taught them to love Jehovah.

Anyone who knew Eula would tell you that she loved Jehovah, and she loved people. Her prayer was that she would never forget Jehovah’s name and she never did. Eula loved to talk, so she had no problem telling people about her loving God Jehovah and his wonderful promises for the future.

During her life she helped several people to come to know and serve Jehovah. Her favorite saying was, “it’s just around the corner,” and she believed that with her whole heart. She often spoke of her dear family members and friend who preceded her in death and how she longed to be with them again in paradise.

Eula had many talents, she was a very accomplished seamstress and tailor, she had a talent for remembering and explaining the Bible talking to people and putting them at ease, cooking, as she could take very humble ingredients and make them taste good. She loved puzzles and could put them together so fast it would make your head spin. When was was young, she loved to travel, dance, sing and laugh.

Eula is survived by two sisters, Mary Holt and Daisy Jordan; her son Caldwell Woods and his wife Rose and her daughter Mary Helen Chaney and her husband John, and many grand, great, and great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.

Two Arrested After Traffic Stop In Felda

TWO ARRESTED ON DRUG CHARGES

Thursday evening, August 29, 2024, by Hendry County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Cpl. L. Drew was monitoring traffic on State Road 82 in the Felda community when he observed what was later identified as a 2013 Infinity SUV with only one working headlight.

Cpl. Drew initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle and when the deputy asked the driver to step out, Cpl. Drew immediately detected a strong odor of marijuana. After speaking with both the driver, identified as 32-year-old Mikira Mungin of Immokalee and the passenger, 35-year-old Talbot Karsa Fuller, also of Immokalee, a search of the vehicle was conducted. Hendry County Sgt. J. Locke along with his K-9 partner Reggie arrived on scene and completed a free air sniff of the exterior of the vehicle for narcotics.

The search revealed narcotics in various locations within the vehicle along with a considerable sum of cash in various denominations and drug paraphernalia. The Narcotics test was completed and tested positive for Marijuana and Fentanyl.

Mungin was arrested and charged with Possession of Marijuana over 20 grams, Trafficking Fentanyl, Possession of Controlled Substance without Prescription, Possession of Methamphetamine with Intent to Sell, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia Use to Transport Fentanyl. Mungin was released August 30, 2024, on $90,000.00 bond.

Fuller was arrested and charged with Possession of Marijuana over twenty grams, Trafficking Fentanyl, Possession of Controlled Substance without Prescription, Possession of Methamphetamine with Intent to Sell, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia Use to Transport Fentanyl. Ron Jackson Arrested After Alleged Amigos & Beer Incident

LOCAL MAN ARRESTED FOR ATTEMPTED BURGLARY AND POSSESSION OF NARCOTICS

During the early morning hours of Wednesday, August 28, 2024, the owner of Amigos & Beer Restaurant was closing when he heard the doorknob on the outside door of the building jiggling as if someone was attempting to enter the closed business. With failed attempts the owner heard what sounded like someone trying to jump onto a garbage can to climb onto the roof. The business owner then looked out the window and saw a man outside the business.

Upon the arrival of deputies, a search of the area was conducted, and deputies noticed a man exit the property of Amigos & Beer and walk toward Martin Luther King Blvd. Upon further investigation Deputies were able to determine 41-year-old Ronald Martin Jackson had in fact attempted to make entry into the Amigos & Beer Restaurant. When deputies searched his backpack, they located a syringe and a clear substance which later tested positive for Methamphetamine.

Jackson was arrested and charged with Loitering & Prowling, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and Possession of Methamphetamine. Jackson is currently being held in the Hendry County Jail on $9,000.00 bond.

Hendry County's Confused Waste Pickups

LABELLE, FL -- Hendry County released this statement this afternoon:

"Please be advised that waste pick up services that were regularly scheduled during the Labor Day holiday will be picked up on the next regularly scheduled service day, which is Thursday, September 5.

"All waste pick up for the remainder of the week will be picked up on the regularly scheduled day beginning today, Tuesday, September 3."

Any questions?

The holiday trash schedule has always been a mystery to many. In many neighborhood, homes were putting out trash today, Tuesday. When, nothing was picked up, they thought well, maybe it's going to be Wednesday. The homeowners still have no clue about yard waste pickup for this week. Regular day, or delayed?

Our guess as to the translations: If your regular trash pickup day falls on one of the holidays the county observes, that day will have no trash pickup. It will be skipped entirely and you must wait for your next regular pickup day. If your trash pickup does not fall on a holiday, your regular pickup will be as normal. It is not clear if this applies only to this week's Labor Day pickup, or will apply to all future holidays as well..

Florida Car Pricing Scams Being Prosecuted Starting September 1

Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody, Florida's chief law enforcement officer in July warned Florida auto dealership owners that she will begin enforcement of Florida's 25-year old law of false advertising and unfair business practices starting September 1.

A letter was sent by certified mail to all Florida dealerships with the stern warn for all dealers they must now start fully disclosing what had been for decades hidden fees and costs in advertisements.

Florida dealerships were not being prosecuted for advertising car and truck prices that were misleading or false. For decades, nearly all car and truck advertisements, did not include added fees and equipment, or disclose that the vehicle price depends on rebates which all customers may not qualify for.

In most cases the added fees and qualifiers were in small print at the bottom of an ad, or even on a different page of the dealer's website, making it difficult for consumers to know what the real price is, or to comparison shop among several dealers.

Consumers can file a complaint to the Florida Attorney General's office if they find misleading pricing and sales tactics to 1-866-9-NO-SCAM or MyFloridaLegal.com,

Earl Stewart, Jr. of Earl Stewart Toyota in Lake Park, Florida, has been crusading against dealers who advertise false and misleading prices, and giving different prices for each customer..

As one of the few dealership offering "one price" to all customers. with no hidden fees, he says it's unfair for auto dealers to advertise a lower price than consumers can actually buy a vehicle for, while he advertises a real price that is higher than those artificially "low" prices of his competitors.

Stewart, on his weekly radio show, has blasted Attorney General Moody for her lack of action against dealers who have been breaking the law for decades.

Stewart says the lobby of the Florida Automobile Dealers Association (FADA) is just too powerful, and puts pressure on Moody and past Attorneys General to not interfere in their businesses.

As Moody notified dealers of actions against dealer misleading advertising, the FADA and President Ted Smith sent a certified letter on June 14 to all of Florida dealership owners warning of possible enforcement coming September 1, but subtly hints it may be "business as usual" as the Attorney General has always been lax to enforce the law and does not have enough personnel to prosecute dealers anyway.

Smith notes in his letter to dealers that the Office of the Attorney General (OAG), for the last 20 years has taken "a predominantly hands off approach with respect to dealer advertising" even though the 25-year old law is clear that the advertised price must include all fees and extras (excluding government taxes and fees).

Smith said the OAG had given guidance to the FADA since 2004, that even though dealer advertising is violating Florida Statute 501.976(16), no enforcement action would be taken against dealers as long as they provide a footnote below the advertised price stating that delivery fees would be added to that advertised price.

The OAG has followed that policy for the last 20 years. The OAG said they believed this would cause no harm to consumers. Apparently, the OAG will still allow this practice, but go after dealers who hide the footnoted information, or hide or don't disclose "add-ons" to the price, or show a lower advertised price by including discounts for which  not everyone can qualify.

The FADA has been holding "roadshows" for it's dealers to explain the possible new enforcement action and held  a webinar July 17 for dealers at a cost of $199 to members or $375 for industry vendors.

Some consumer advocates guess that consumers will most likely continue to find vehicle shopping a time consuming chore as dealerships continue to use advertising tactics against consumers trying to comparison shop, and find online true pricing.

A future trend maybe online shopping through vendors like Amazon who are planning this year to offer one manufacturer's dealership vehicle prices on their platform that presumably will be transparent and competitive. Sam's Club, Costco and AARP offer car buying services that refer consumers to pre-selected dealers with low price and price transparency that also is a help to comparison shopping although all dealerships are not included among the car buying services.
