Florida Keys' Watercolor Kapers - Part 3 Brown Pelican

In Part 3 of this new story, a Brown Pelican talks about the history of the Florida Keys and how the Brown Pelican was there when it all happened.

The Brown Pelican

It is now a couple of hundred years later. This time in a small cove just around the corner from our beach is a boat at anchor. It is of a different look and design than the Spanish galleon. This ship is somewhat smaller and much more streamlined. It has triangular sails on two masts instead of the square sails of the galleon. It has no quarter or raised decks and has only three cannons on each side, their barrels pointing out of raised hatches on the ready.

There is a flag flying from the top of the tallest mast. It is all black and is emblazoned on each side with a skull on top and crossed-bones right below. There are two longboats drawn up on a small beach opening between the mangroves. In the distance is this end of a very small mahogany and pine forest. This is proof that our Spanish explorers have been visiting this area for quite some time and made good of their promise to log the forest.

On this beach are a mish mash of men, running, sitting, and lying about. Some appear to be drinking. They are almost all bare-chested and most barefooted. Some have gold earrings and gold nose rings. They have bandannas about their heads, single pigtails behind, and combination of beards of all colors, types, and sizes. They are all armed with pistols and swords.

These men are the pirates of the Caribbean. What are they here for? They could be looking for water. They will find little here, if any. There might be some in the old Calusa Indian well. But mainly they are here waiting for a Spanish treasure galleon returning to Spain from Mexico to come sailing by in the Gulf Stream. They mean to procure the gold and valuables for themselves.

We pelicans did not fear these men. They were too busy with other matters to pay us any mind. We did observe.

SNAP Food Benefits Increase Through September

WASHINGTON, D.C.  — The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced today a 15 percent increase in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits through September 2021, providing an estimated $3.5 billion to households experiencing food insecurity during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The funding is made possible by President Biden’s American Rescue Plan, which invests federal resources to reduce hunger across the country, strengthen the food supply chain, invest in rural America, and provide long awaited support to underserved, socially disadvantaged communities.

The 15 percent increase in SNAP benefits will provide about $28 more per person, per month, or more than $100 more per month for a household of four, in additional SNAP benefits.

“We cannot sit by and watch food insecurity grow in the United States,” said Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack. “The American Rescue Plan brings help to those hurting the most due to the pandemic. It increases SNAP benefits so households can afford to put food on the table. It invests in working people and small towns and small businesses to get the economy back on track. And it makes the most meaningful investments in generations to reduce poverty.”

Additional facts on nutrition assistance in the American Rescue Plan can be found here.

USDA touches the lives of all Americans each day in so many positive ways. In the Biden-Harris Administration, USDA is transforming America’s food system with a greater focus on more resilient local and regional food production, ensuring access to healthy and nutritious food in all communities, building new markets and streams of income for farmers and producers using climate smart food and forestry practices, making historic investments in infrastructure and clean energy capabilities in rural America, and committing to equity across the Department by removing systemic barriers and building a workforce more representative of America. Florida Coyote Attacks On Calves Not Common Says UF Wildlife Professor

Contrary to popular belief in the cattle ranching community, coyotes don't prey on cattle or calves, says University of Florida Professor in the Department of Wildlife Ecology and Conservation, Dr. Marty Main.

Dr. Main made a presentation at a University of Florida/IFAS webinar for the Florida Master Naturalist Program, Thursday, March 18 dicussing facts and myths about coyotes in Florida.

Coyotes, being omnivorous, prey only on smaller animals, rabbits, rats, mice, eat vegetation, and insects including grasshoppers, he said.

Although cattle ranchers sometimes place donkeys in their pastures thinking they will protect cattle and livestock, studies done by Dr. Main and others at Florida cattle ranches found that coyotes are not a widespread problem or significant source of mortality for livestock.

It seems calves sometimes found dead were victims of disease or natural causes, then disfigured after they died by wildlife in the area, but were not killed by coyotes.

Dr. Main's presentation "Coyotes in Florida: the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" discussed how the establishment and spread of coyotes in Florida has ramifications associated with how to classify these animals, as well as understanding their potential positive and negative roles regarding environmental, economic, and human welfare impacts.

His presentation discusses these issues to separate fact from fiction regarding coyotes in Florida.

Watch the Coyote webinar on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/OfficialFMNP/videos/839006786651063

(The section about preying on livestock starts at 33:00 minutes into the webinar)

Florida Keys' Watercolor Kapers by Bob Kranich

The Brown Pelican, (Part 2, Excerpt 24)

In this new story, a Brown Pelican talks about the history of the Florida Keys and how the Brown Pelican was there when it all happened.

The Brown Pelican

Our next visitors came along much later, sometime in the fifteen hundreds. They were supposedly much more educated and advanced. But they were a ruthless group of explorers.

Now we see a three-masted ship, a galleon. It has two raised decks above the main deck in both the front and rear. It is about one hundred and forty feet long and thirty five feet wide. Somehow it has found a way through the reef. It now sits at anchor in the Hawk Channel right off the shore of the same beach our Indian visitors had landed on at least six hundred years prior.

They have launched the ship’s two longboats and are rowing in to the shore. There are at least twelve to fourteen men in each one. They too are thrown up on the beach by the same kind of waves that assisted our earlier native Americans.

They scramble out and pull the boats up onto the sand. They are not as graceful as our Indian friends were. There appears to be a leader. He walks up on the land and plants a yellow and red flag onto the sand. He is dressed in ornate clothing. Flowing pantaloons hang around his waist and down to his upper knees and tights cover his legs. His followers gather around him. They wear fancy hats and clothing. Some are wearing metal breast plates, and a couple have blunderbusses,* some have pikes and all have straight-style swords.

These are the conquistadors or explorers who conquered Mexico. What are they here for? They will claim this land for the king and queen of Spain. However, basically, they are here for gold, silver, and jewels. They will find none here. Let’s listen a moment to them.

The leader: “I, Don Juan Diego de Escanpar do claim this entire land in the name of their Royal Majesties, the King and Queen of Spain for all eternity. Men look around, see what is here. I would like gold, but if you can capture some natives, we can take them back to Cuba to work our sugar plantations.”

One of the men, “Look, Don Diego, at the very large mahogany trees.”

Don Diego says, “Very nice. When we return, we will log those trees, and send the lumber back to Spain. Their Majesties will be very proud, and it will bring us fame, favor, and fortune.”

Now we pelicans had to be a bit wary around these men. They would have shot us and had us for dinner.

Quitting Tobacco Goal Of Tobacco Prevention Efforts At Health Department

LABELLE, FL. – Each year, Through With Chew Week raises awareness about the dangers of smokeless tobacco use (chew, dip and snus) and the effective tools available to quit.

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, quitting smokeless tobacco is more important than ever. Smokeless tobacco is harmful to health and is highly addictive. The use of some types of smokeless tobacco products is associated with an increased risk of heart disease and stroke, and having heart disease increases your risk of severe illness from COVID-19. Smokeless tobacco also contains harmful chemicals, such as a radioactive element called polonium-210 and harmful metals including arsenic and lead. Some of these chemicals are known to cause cancer. Apart from cancer, other oral health issues from smokeless tobacco include mouth sores, gum recession, tooth decay, and permanent discoloration of teeth.

“Smokeless tobacco poses serious health risks, and the use among adults in rural areas continues to increase” said Kristi Hall, Tobacco Prevention Specialist “We want residents in Hendry County to know that Tobacco Free Florida has free tools and services to help them improve their overall health and quit tobacco.”

In the past, Hendry Tobacco Free Partnership has participated in the Swamp Cabbage Parade in LaBelle and the Hendry County Fair in Clewiston to help increase awareness of Smokeless Tobacco and Through With Chew Week. This year, due to COVID-19, the SWAT clubs took a different approach to spreading awareness.

Hendry County School SWAT Club’s in both Clewiston and LaBelle Middle and High Schools participated in a “Skip The Dip” jump rope competition. “It was very fun-filled. The students really enjoyed participating and spreading awareness.” said Ms. Ross, LaBelle High School SWAT advisor. Ms. Porth, the SWAT advisor for Clewiston Middle School stated, “The students did a race and had to jump from one end to the other”.

Those looking to quit tobacco can create a personalized quit plan using Tobacco Free Florida’s free Quit Your Way tools and services. The Quit Your Way program offers free tools and services like Phone Quit, Group Quit and Web Quit, as well as individual tools like text support, a Quit Guide and helpful emails. Free nicotine replacement therapy such as nicotine patches, gum or lozenges are available to tobacco users who are 18 or older, if medically appropriate.

For more information on quitting tobacco, you can call 1-877-U-CAN-NOW (1-877-822-6669) or visit tobaccofreeflorida.com/quityourway.

On March 5, 2021 at approximately 2:13 pm Detectives with the Hendry County Sheriff’s Office General Crimes Unit, put closure to a thirty year old sexual battery case that involved several juvenile victims.

In the early part of November 2020, Detectives with the General Crimes Unit received a complaint and information concerning a sexual battery of a child under the age of 12 which occurred approximately thirty years prior. “We are committed to this community and work very hard to ensure the safety of all citizens”, said Sheriff Steve Whidden. “We take these offenses very seriously and will not stop until we apprehend the perpetrators of these violent crimes”.

Florida Governor Greatly Expands Who Can Get COVID Vaccinations

LABELLE, FL. -- Today, Governor Ron DeSantis issued Executive Order 21-47 which expands COVID-19 vaccination in Florida to include the following:

 During this first phase of vaccine administration, all providers administering any COVID-19 vaccine shall only vaccinate the following populations:

 Long-term care facility residents and staff;
Persons 65 years of age and older; Health care personnel with direct patient contact;
K-12 school employees 50 years of age and older;
Sworn law enforcement officers 50 years of age and older; and Firefighters 50 years of age and older.

 In addition to hospital providers, physicians licensed under chapters 458 and 459, Florida Statutes, may also vaccinate persons whom they deem to be extremely vulnerable to COVID-19.

Advanced practice registered nurses under chapter 464, Florida Statutes, and pharmacists licensed under chapter 465, Florida Statutes, may vaccinate persons determined by a physician to be extremely vulnerable to COVID-19.

Such physician determinations shall include a statement that the patient meets the defined eligibility criteria established by a form prescribed by the Florida Department of Health.

Editor's Note: It appears that because of the current shortage of vaccine, exceeding the supply, this new order may further complicate and confuse the public, who may now be waiting even longer to get the vaccine.
