Florida Black Bear Killing Questioned

FWC Offers Reward For Info

Officers with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) are seeking the public's help in their investigation into the recent death of a Florida black bear.

The bear's carcass was found dumped and wrapped in a tarp last Friday in the Golden Gate Estates area of Collier County. Decomposition had set in, and investigators suspect foul play.

"This is a disturbing case," said FWC Capt. Jayson Horadam. "Bears are protected under state law. It is illegal to kill or wound bears. The offense is punishable as a felony."

Anyone with information on this case is asked to call the FWC's Wildlife Alert Hotline at 888-404-3922. Callers may remain anonymous and could be eligible for a reward if their information leads to an arrest.

The FWC is committed to reducing human-bear conflicts. Access to unsecured garbage encourages bears to remain in neighborhoods, which creates conflicts. For more information about living with black bears visit MyFWC.com/Bear.

Hendry-Glades School Immunizations Required

Vaccinations Required for School Entry by Pat Dobbins

The first day of school is scheduled for August 22, 2011 in Hendry County, Florida. Parents need to make sure their children have received the proper immunizations as required by law.

The Hendry and Glades County Health Departments can provide school vaccinations (free of charge) for children from infants through the age of 18.

Please be advised that there are changes to the required vaccines for school entry. The new change in the vaccination schedule requires a fourth dose of the polio vaccine within a shorter time period.  This means a child should have an additional polio vaccination six months after their first dose or after they turn four years old.  Studies from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows the vaccine works better when given on this schedule.

Students must have proof of immunization on a Department of Health form (DOH 680 form). This form has been referred to as a "blue card" because it used to be printed on blue paper, however, the DOH 680 form can be in any color.

Students entering kindergarten are required to have the following vaccinations:

  • (5) DTaP (Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis): If the 4th DTaP vaccine is administered on or after the fourth birthday, a 5th DTaP isnot required.
  • (5) Polio: If the 4th dose is administered on or after the fourth birthday, a 5th dose is not required.
  • (2) MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella)
  • (3) Hepatitis B
  • (2) Varicella (Chickenpox)

Students entering 7th grade must receive a Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis) booster.

Immunizations will be provided at the following locations:

Hendry County Health Department:

  • Clewiston - 1100 South Olympia St
    • 8:00am to 4:30pm, Monday through Friday.
  • LaBelle – 1140 Pratt Blvd
    • 8:00am to 4:30pm, Monday through Friday.

Additionally, The Hendry County Health Department will be available at Middle Schools in LaBelle and Clewiston to provide immunizations for students. (See the schedule below)

Thursday, August 18, Clewiston Middle School – Open House for parents and students - 5pm to 7pm

Friday, August 19, LaBelle Middle School - Open House for parents and 7th and 8th graders - 11am-1pm

The Glades County Health Department will accept walk-ins for immunizations at their office located at 1021 Health Park Drive in Moore Haven Office hours are listed below:

 Glades County Health Department:

  • Moore Haven - 1021 Health Park Drive
    • 8:00am to 4:30pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays.
    • 11:30am to 8:00 pm on Wednesdays

If your child has received immunizations at a different location or in other cities or states, it is very important that you take all shot records for your child to your health department or healthcare provider. This will help to avoid delays or unnecessary duplicated immunizations.

If you decide to take your child to a private healthcare provider for their immunizations, please make your appointment soon so that your child will be ready to start school.

Warren Jeffs - Man With 70 Wives On Trial

Fundamentalist Mormon Leader Expecting Followers To Support Him

The jurors at the trial of a polygamist religious leader with as much as 70 wives and 31 daughters, are set to hear opening arguments on allegations of sexual assault against two under-age girls.

Warren Steed Jeffs, 55, leader of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is the defendant in a San Angelo, Texas trial this week. He is accused of having sex with a then 14 year old and a 12 year old.

Jeffs, as "Prophet, Seer, and Revelator" teaches that a man must have three wives to get to "highest glory of heaven," and the more wives, the better to reach it. Jeffs took over the cult after his father's death. He then married all but two of his father's 19 wives. His father, the previous cult leader, was said to have 60 children.

The number of wives and children attributed to polygamous marriages is in question due to the extreme secrecy of the sect. Members are said to lie to outsiders to protect their leaders and community as, making it difficult to know precisely what really goes on inside the locked gates of the remote community.

Jeffs was on the FBI's Most Wanted list until captured in 2006. Seven other male members of the sect have been found guilty of sexual offenses, including two who plead guilty.

Wednesday afternoon's hearings are taking up motions by the defense to limit documents to be allowed in evidence at the trial. Evidence collected includes DNA from hundreds of adults and children to establish family lines. The prosecution will have to prove the age of the alleged victims, and their sexual abuse by Jeffs in order to convict him.

The secretive nature of some prospective witnesses from the polygamous community, and their alleged propensities to lie to protect Jeffs may prove a stumbling block for the prosecution.

The jury is comprised of 10 women and two men, overseen by Judge Barbara Walther.

How Confident Are Floridians In Economy?

Interest Increased In Car And Appliance Purchases

The most recent survey by the folks at the University of Florida show more interest in big ticket purchases like cars and major appliances. Seniors are claimed to have improved confidence in future economic conditions.

Increased optimism about making major purchases played a significant role in consumer confidence rising two points in July to 68, according to a new University of Florida survey.

Four of the five components that make up the index increased or remained unchanged. The biggest improvement was in confidence to purchase big-ticket items such as cars and appliances which rose five points to 77.

"Some of this may have to do with declines in gas prices during the month of June and much of July," said Chris McCarty, director of UF's Survey Research Center in the Bureau of Economic and Business Research. "This leaves more money in people's budgets for other purchases."

The other index components that rose were perceptions of personal finances now compared with a year ago, which increased three points to 57, and expectations of personal finances a year from now, which climbed one point to 75. Expectations of U.S. economic conditions over the next five years remained at 72. The only component to decline was perceptions of U.S. economic conditions over the next year, which fell one point to 59.

McCarty said another reason for the increase was improved confidence among seniors, which rose five points to 66. Last month's overall decline, McCarty said, was due in large part to seniors' uncertainty over potential cuts to Medicare and Social Security. Although the federal government has not yet released its budget plans, the delay in reducing those programs may have led to a slight improvement.

McCarty also said seniors may have learned that proposed entitlement cuts might not affect those in or near retirement as much as previously thought.

Whether the increasing "confidence" by Floridians will lead to more purchasing is still up in the air.

Is Your Phone Hacked? It Can Be!

Phone Hacking - It's Easier Than Most People Realize

LABELLE, FL. -- Could your cell phone be hacked? Experts say it easier than most people believe for an unauthorized person to get into your phone and retrieve messages.

Here's why it is easy to hack a cell phone. Two of the largest cell phone operators, Sprint and AT&T don't require passwords or PIN numbers to access voice mail messages. That's the opening door for someone to listen to your messages.

Hackers just dial a phone number, press * to access that phone's voice messages and if a pass code hasn't been set up, all the messages are freely available. If a PIN has been set up, it's still fairly easy to guess what it is.

When a pin number is set up, people may use easy to remember, or easy to input combinations of four numbers. The most common PINS are 1234 and 0000.  Other most common pass codes picked are 9999, 5555, 1111, 2222 and surprisingly more odd numbers like 1212, 1998, 0852, and 2580.

Many may just pick the last four numbers of their phone number for their code, making it easy for an unauthorized user to try to get to your messages.

How To Eliminate The Possibility Of Hacking Your Phone

If you care about someone listening to your phone messages without your permission:

1. Make sure to set up a pass code, especially if you use AT&T or Sprint, and use something that will not be obvious or easy to guess
2. Erase old voice messages. Once erased they are not accessible by anyone
3. Don't tell anyone your code, no matter how much you might trust them.

Space Shuttle Completes Last Flight

At 5:57 a.m. EDT, space shuttle Atlantis landed for the final time at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida after 200 orbits around Earth and a journey of 5,284,862 miles on STS-135.

It was the 25th night landing, the 78th landing at Kennedy and the133rd landing in shuttle history.

Atlantis' main gear touched down at 5:57:00 a.m. followed by the nose gear at 5:57:20 and wheels stop at 5:57:54 a.m. At wheels stop, the mission elapsed time was 12 days, 18 hours, 28 minutes and 50 seconds.

The STS-135 crew consisted of Commander Chris Ferguson, Pilot Doug Hurley, Mission Specialists Sandra Magnus and Rex Walheim. They delivered more than 9,400 pounds of spare parts, spare equipment and other supplies in the Raffaello multi-purpose logistics module - including 2,677 pounds of food - that will sustain space station operations for the next year. The 21-foot long, 15-foot diameter Raffaello brought back nearly 5,700 pounds of unneeded materials from the station.

A post-landing news conference at Kennedy is planned for 10 a.m. on NASA TV and http://www.nasa.gov/ntv. The participants will be Bill Gerstenmaier, associate administrator for Space Operations, Bob Cabana, Kennedy center director, Mike Moses, space shuttle launch integration manager, and Mike Leinbach, space shuttle launch director.

Since STS-1 launched on April 12, 1981, 355 individuals from 16 countries flew 852 times aboard the shuttle. The five shuttles traveled more than 542 million miles and hosted more than 2,000 experiments in the fields of Earth, astronomy, biological and materials sciences. The shuttles docked with two space stations, the Russian Mir and the International Space Station. Shuttles deployed 180 payloads, including satellites, returned 52 from space and retrieved, repaired and redeployed seven spacecraft.

STS-135 was the 33rd and final flight for Atlantis, which spent 307 days in space, orbited Earth 4,848 times and traveled 125,935,769 miles.

A welcome home ceremony for the astronauts will be held Friday, July 22, in Houston. The public is invited to attend the 4 p.m. CDT event at NASA's Hangar 990 at Ellington Field. Gates to Ellington Field will open at 3:30 p.m. The ceremony will be broadcast live on NASA Television.

Shuttle Scheduled For Final Landing And Double Sonic Booms

Double Sonic Booms To Be Heard In SW Florida

LABELLE. FL. -- Sky Watchers in Southwest Florida are getting ready for the last landing of the NASA Space Shuttle. Atlantis will be traveling south to north over much of the southwestern coast of Florida in a northeasterly path, flying over Naple, Lehigh Acres, LaBelle, Sebring, and finally landing at Kennedy Space Center, north of Melbourne and Titusville.

Along the final flight path of Atlantis, an early morning double sonic boom will be heard by those on the ground, as the shuttle flies faster than the speed of sound overhead, having entered the earth's atmosphere. This will most likely be the last sonic booms to be heard by anyone in populated areas for a great many years.

As it's last payload mission, space shuttle Atlantis deployed a small, eight-pound, 5" X 5" X 10" technology demonstration satellite, called PicoSat, from a canister in the shuttle cargo bay. The satellite will relay data back to investigators on the performance of its own solar cells for analysis and possible use on future space hardware.

PicoSat was the 180th and final payload deployed in space shuttle history.

The Flight Dynamics Officer in Mission Control has slightly updated the times for Atlantis' two Thursday landing opportunities at Kennedy Space Center:

Orbit 200 - Sonic booms to be heard starting in Naples, Fl.
    Deorbit burn - 4:49:04 a.m. EDT
    Landing - 5:56:58 a.m. EDT

If a second orbit is necessary to land:

Orbit 201 - Sonic booms to be heard in the Tampa area moving east over Orlando to Melbourne
    Deorbit burn - 6:25:44 a.m. EDT
    Landing - 7:32:55 a.m. EDT

Florida Online Romance - Internet Dating Warning

Online Romance Scams Heating Up in Southwest Florida

In the old Waylon Jennings song "Looking for Love," the songwriter tells a story about his attempt to find true love; only to discover that he's been looking for love in all the wrong places. This familiar song describes the desire each one of us has to love and be loved, yet unlike the song we don't always end up finding that perfect person we've been dreaming of.

Unfortunately, looking for love in all the wrong places can often be the case when searching for friendship, romance, love and even marriage on the internet. Every day thousands of people who join dating sites, social networking sites, chat room and instant messaging sites are becoming victims of the "Romance Scam."

Sadly, scammers are targeting individuals over the age of 40 who may be emotionally vulnerable due to a recent divorce or death of a spouse, though all age groups are at risk, including the elderly.

If you or someone you know is involved in online dating, be forewarned: that online contact could be a criminal sitting in a cyber cafe with a well-rehearsed script that's being used on thousands of other innocent victims. These heartless scammers play on the victim's vulnerability by declaring their undying love, sending flowers or gifts and promising a fairy tale life together.

They will also use stories of severe life circumstances, family tragedies, injuries to themselves while serving overseas in the military, or other hardships to keep their victims concerned and involved in their schemes. Eventually as the relationship progresses, scammers will ask the victims to send money to help overcome a financial situation they claim to be experiencing.

These are all lies intended to take money from unsuspecting victims.

In another scheme, scammers ask victims to receive funds in the form of a cashier's check, money order, or wire transfer, claiming they are out of the country and unable to cash the instruments or receive the funds directly. The scammers ask victims to redirect the funds to them via a money order or by opening a bank account and providing the love interest the bank account number.

Scammers may also ask victims to reship packages instead of redirecting funds. In these examples, victims are instructed to pick up merchandise at a store or shipping outlet then forward the merchandise to an address which is usually out of the country. Most likely the merchandise has been purchased online by the scammer with a stolen or fraudulent credit card.

Complaints have been received from victims whose online love interests are located in the countries of Nigeria, Ghana, England, Russia and Canada. The all internet users who are considering an online romance to remember that scammers will use whatever personal information you provide to quickly paint themselves as your perfect match.

Although these romances can be extremely exciting, apply common sense over your feelings.

Casey Anthony Leaves Jail With $537.68 - What Next?

Will Released Anthony Stay In Florida Or Did She Fly To Ohio?

Casey Anthony left Orlando's Orange county jail Sunday morning accompanied by attorney Jose Baez at 12:14 a.m.

Wearing a pink shirt, hair in a bun, the 25-year old served three years of jail confinement, mostly in "protective custody" away from the general jail population, leaving for the last time in an SUV mystery ride to one of her attorney's offices, the destination from there is up for speculation, although some say a 10-minute drive to Orlando Executive Airport was next.

She left jail with $537.68 in her pocket from her jail account, and made a 15-second walk out of the front-door main jail exit, accompanied by Kevlar-clad Orange County special response team deputies, to a waiting dark-colored SUV.

Her only apparent words spoken during her release were "Thank you" to the assault-weapon carrying deputy escorting her out the door.

Three journalists were allowed inside the jail at 10 p.m. Saturday night and waited for the release. Three scenarios were given to the reporters in case of any problems in the release from jail. They were instructed to film or photograph but were not allowed to ask her anything or speak to her.

The SUV transporting Casey, along with a bevy of escort police vehicles, as one theory has it, reportedly ended up in a covered parking garage at co-defense attorney Cheney Mason's office. Another speculation is Casey then was taken on a 10-minute drive to board a private jet bound for Columbus, Ohio.

Anthony was free at last after an acquittal on murder charges after having served her four-year misdemeanor sentence, minus one year for good behavior and time served, on four guilty sentences for lying to police. She has a prior felony record for stealing and bad check charges.

The question everyone is asking now is "Where is Casey?" and what will she do next.

Police activity was seen early Sunday morning at the Orlando Executive Airport, about ten minutes from her attorney's office, as someone looking like Casey boarded a private jet bound for Ohio. Anthony's parents, George and Cindy lived in Ohio before moving to Florida. And George's sister and brother-in-law live in the Youngstown, Ohio area.

A woman appearing to look like Casey, but now with long hair in a pony tail and wearing a short dress, was photographed running across the Orlando Executive Airport parking lot to a nearby building. If it were Casey, she would have let her down from the bun, and changed from the jeans and pink top she wore at the jail.

A private twin-jet Lear 45 aircraft owned by a Naples, Florida company, departed from Orlando Executive Airport at 1:04 a.m. Sunday morning arriving in Columbus, Ohio at 2:51 a.m.  The 12-seat jet, operated in the Columbus area by a prominent Florida and Ohio real estate and automobile sales company, had filed a flight plan to depart originally at 10 p.m. Saturday night, but didn't take off until 3 hours later.

The mystery aircraft arrived in Orlando on Thursday morning, July 14th after a flight from Columbus, and sat at the Orlando ramp until Sunday morning's departure.

The Lear Jet was still parked at the Port Columbus International Airport Sunday.

Orlando Executive Airport officials reportedly claimed the plane was taking golfers back north after a Florida vacation.

    Speculation on "Where's Casey?":

    1. At one of her attorney's homes or guest homes in the Orlando area laying low for a few weeks and preparing for a defense in numerous law suits filed or being filed against her
    2. Flown to Ohio by private jet (see above) - from the attorney's office to the airport is a ten minute drive
    3. Going to Puerto Rico (Jose Baez is Puerto Rican and has contacts there) - no passport needed to enter P.R.
    4. California - If she has an agent or needs one, Hollywood may be a likely place to collect her first fees for an interview, , photos, movie or book deal
    5. South Florida - Miami - The place to "party" and be seen
    6. South Florida - Clewiston - The place to hide out in small-town Florida away from crowds. An "alternative" lifestyle resort is said to be opening in rural Hendry county catering to gay and bisexual clients. Casey is said to be bisexual, according to Jose Baez during her murder trial opening statement.
    7. In seclusion for therapy for what may now be multiple psychiatric symptoms

    New Access To Lee-Collier Park

Corkscrew Watershed Opens Entrance To Bird Rookery Swamp

Bird watchers and outdoor enthusiasts alike have a new gateway into the Corkscrew Regional Ecosystem Watershed (CREW) management area in Southwest Florida.

The South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) has completed an access enhancement to the popular Bird Rookery Swamp, opening a southern entrance point for the public to CREW. The work is part of the District's overall effort to facilitate recreational use of public land.

The Rookery's Swamp area's new features include:
    ·         Ample parking
    ·         Informational kiosks
    ·         Upgraded access to the existing boardwalk
    ·         Americans with Disabilities Act compliant facilities, including a wheelchair access trail
Encompassing 7,017 acres, the Bird Rookery Swamp Management Unit is managed by the District in cooperation with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). The site is a key component in maintaining the hydrological balance of the greater Corkscrew Regional Ecosystem Watershed.
The District and its partners — representing businesses, environmental groups, landowners and governmental agencies — manage CREW for its numerous benefits to water storage, wildlife preservation and public recreation opportunities. The 60,000-acre watershed spanning Lee and Collier counties includes a majestic 5,000-acre marsh at its headwaters and the famous Audubon Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary.

The vast majority of Bird Rookery Swamp features forested wetland dominated by bald cypress and red maple trees. There is also a mix of wet flatwoods and dome swamps bordering the western edge and an area of open marsh, dominated by sawgrass and Carolina willow in the center tract.
Many threatened and endangered plants and animals call Bird Rookery Swamp home. Florida panthers, black bears, white-tail deer, alligators and a menagerie of birds are just a sampling of Florida's native species utilizing the area.
Bird Rookery Swamp is also a great place for visitors to experience a glimpse of "Old Florida."  Recreational opportunities such as biking, hiking and nature appreciation are allowed throughout the property.  There is a 1,400-foot boardwalk near the public parking area that connects to a 12-mile loop of tram roads through some of the most beautiful natural habitats found in Southwest Florida.

HIV Map Of Florida - How Do Counties Compare?

Map Shows Incidence Of Diagnosed HIV Patients

The Rollins School of Public Health has published a website with an interactive map showing county by county statistics on prevalence of persons diagnosed with HIV.

This website provides a high-resolution view of the geography of HIV in the United States, 30 years into the epidemic. It allows users to visually explore the HIV epidemic alongside resources such as HIV testing center locations and National Institutes of Health-Funded HIV Prevention & Vaccine Trials Sites.

Glades county had between 24 and 53 individuals, while Hendry had between 54 and 159. Both counties have among the largest percentage per population affected.

It is noted counties with prisons may have an artificially inflated rate. Both Hendry and Glades had correctional institutions when the latest survey was made.

The data come from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's national HIV surveillance database that is comprised of HIV surveillance reports from state and local health departments. AIDSVu will be updated on an ongoing basis in conjunction with annual HIV surveillance data releases, as well as new data and additional information as they become available.

    Hendry Car Crash- Tree Wins

Man Hits Tree On Birchwood Parkway Curve

LABELLE, FL. -- A slight curve on Port LaBelle's Birchwood Parkway apparently took another victim Thursday morning. About 9:30 a.m. a red older model Mazda lost control and hit an oak tree in the median, crushing the car's front end badly.

Although the roadway is posted at 25 m.p.h. drivers on this stretch of road just north of State Road 80, frequently lose control in the slight curve in the roadway, ending up hitting one of the many palm and oak trees planted in the median.

This morning's crash left the car with a crushed front end, and resulted in several Hendry county deputies, several units from the fire department, EMS, and the two FHP patrol cars responding.

The unidentified male driver turned down treatment from EMS and presumably suffered no injuries. The crash is still under investigation and charges may be pending.

Complaints have been made to the Hendry Road and Bridge department over the years asking for a sign warning of the curve. There have been a dozen or so car vs. tree crashed in this 1/8 mile stretch of road.

Phone Scam Alert - You May Have Won A Car!

Chicago Company Calling Consumers With Misleading Statements

Beware of anyone calling you from a company called Premium Gifting saying you may have won a car or one of the "top four prizes."

The company, Premium Gifting LLC., is apparently seeking prospects for other companies selling time-share or vacation offers and wants to get you to a location where they are having a "prize drawing." In reality you will sit through a high pressure sales pitch.

They only want married couples, so if you're single they won't "invite" you, a tip-off for a sales presentation for real estate or vacation packages.

The phone message assures you that they are not telemarketers, that they know you are on the "Do Not Call List" and obviously they wouldn't be calling if they weren't legitimate, they say, and tell you that you have won a prize.

They claim you filled out an entry form in the last 12-16 months.

The phone number they leave on voice mail for you to return is: 1-866-933-6013 ext. 124 and you are to ask for "Shirley."

The company's website is http://premiumgifting.com. The owner of the site is unknown, hiding behind a "domain proxy" so you can't determine the site owner.

Be alert for anyone calling you who doesn't know your name, and says you've won something.

    Free Fatherhood Classes In Hendry-Glades

    Fatherhood Classes

The Fatherhood Grant with Healthy Families Program of the Hendry County Health Department is coming to a close, however some classes will still be offered through the assistance from United Way.

The grant allowed them to go out in the community and teach fathers ways to take care of their babies and get them involved in the parenting process. There has been great success with the Fatherhood Classes in the past.

Babies don't come with instruction booklets, so this grant gave an opportunity for dads to learn how to nurture their babies. Routines are essential for a child's development and parents need to be consistent, predictable and reliable for their babies. The main goal of the class is to give fathers more confidence in their role of caring for their baby. Moms and dads should be equal partners in caring for their baby.

The classes also teach fathers many hands-on skills and baby-basics, which include holding the baby, diaper changing, burping the baby, comforting the baby when they are upset, as well as many other things that dads may face when their bundle of joy arrives.

Research has shown that when fathers are involved in a child's development, the children do better in school, have better social skills, and have higher self esteem (Which results in less juvenile delinquency and a decrease in teen pregnancies).

"Dad's who have completed the program have reported back that they now have a greater confidence in taking care of their baby and realize how important their role is to the healthy development of their child", says Jim Martinson, Fatherhood Facilitator for the Hendry County Health Department.
