Kids Injured In ATV Crash

Illegal Four-Wheeler Riders - Another Accident

LABELLE, FL. -- A crash Sunday afternoon between an all terrain vehicle and a Ford truck left two pre-tenns injured and taken to Lee Memorial Hospital with critical injuries.

The Florida Highway Patrol said the two boys were hit as they pulled from a wooded area onto Ft. Denaud Road west of LaBelle and north of Huggetts Road. ATV passenger Johnny Marquez age 9, of 43 Everglades Street, LaBelle, and driver Ryan M. Hellard age 12, of 1391 Navaho Avenue, LaBelle are reportedly being treated for broken legs.

The 2000 Ford truck driver, Solon Mils, 76 of LaBelle was not charged in the accident. Both boys were illegally riding the 1998 Yamaha ATV. In Hendry county, no ATVs may be ridden on public property or roadways. ATVs, as unlicensed vehicles, are often ridden unsupervised throughout the area by youths usually without protective headgear, and are a leading cause of serious juvenile injury.

The ATV had $10,000 damage according to FHP Trooper Timothy W. Burtcher and the Ford truck $500. Charges are pending against the ATV driver.

why wasn't Mr. Mils information also released like his address. You released the two boys names and address and not knowing all of the facts about what really happened don't you think thier story should be heard first. Base your story on the fact.

I AGREE THAT THE JUVENILES ADDRESS SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN POSTED, HOWEVER THE FACT IS RIDING 4-WHEELER ON THE ROAD WAY AT ALL IS ILLEGAL!!! UNINFORMED ADULTS PURCHASE THESE DANGEROUS WEAPONS ALL THE TIME AND LET YOUNG CHILDREN HAVE THEM AND PLAY WITH THEM UNSUPERVISED WITHOUT EXPLAINING THE LAWS OR PROPER SAFETY. ANOTHER FACT, MORE CHILDREN ARE SERIOUSLY INJURED AND KILLED ON ATV'S THAN PLAYING WITH HAND GUNS IN HENDRY COUNTY.

  3. How do we know that the boys were in fact on the road and not on the shoulder? From what I've seen and heard Mils could have rounded the corner and ran off the road and hit them. I would like to hear about the facts. Did the police estimate the rate of speed and did they do a breath test for alcohol consumption? Were the boys ever questioned about what happened?
