Who Said "No" To War On Christmas Day?

Saying 'No' To War Means Saying 'No' To Weaponry

On Christmas Day, a notable historical figure gave a speech decrying war and those who promote and profit from it. Here are excerpts from that:

"...saying "no" to war, to every war and to do so with courage, to the very mindset of war, an aimless voyage, a defeat without victors, an inexcusable folly.

"This is what war is: an aimless voyage, a defeat without victors, an inexcusable folly.

"To say "no" to war means saying "no" to weaponry.

"The human heart is weak and impulsive; if we find instruments of death in our hands, sooner or later we will use them. And how can we even speak of peace, when arms production, sales and trade are on the rise?

"How much violence and killing takes place amid deafening silence, unbeknownst to many! People, who desire not weapons but bread, who struggle to make ends meet and desire only peace, have no idea how many public funds are being spent on arms. Yet that is something they ought to know!

"It should be talked about and written about, so as to bring to light the interests and the profits that move the puppet-strings of war.

"May there be an end to the fueling of violence and hatred."

Oweta Gayle Davis Dies At 68

Oweta Gayle Davis 1955-2023

Gayle passed away peacefully into the arms of Jesus on December 20, 2023 in Belleview, FL surrounded by her daughters.

A lifetime resident of Clewiston, Gayle was born April 27, 1955, the youngest of four and was totally loved and spoiled as a child by her siblings. She had a slight speech impediment as a youngster and had trouble with the word sister. It came out as "saucer." When asked her name, she referred to herself as "Gayle Bah-dee" because she couldn't pronounce the name "Baldree.” Family and close friends always referred to her as Gayle "Bah-dee."

Gayle spent much her youth working alongside her family in their grocery store. She spoke often of happy memories and shenanigans she and her siblings shared. Gayle loved her time at the store and thought of it as more fun than work.

Gayle raised her three girls in the small mid-Hendry County community of Flaghole where they had 25 acres to roam free and grow up close to family and nature. She loved being a homemaker and farmer’s wife. Watermelon harvest was one of her favorite times of year. She also enjoyed spending time in the hunting area each season with her family and friends, riding on the buggy and sitting around the campfire.

In the mid 80s, Gayle tried her hand in the retail business and opened Cane Patch Casuals on Sugarland Hwy. in Clewiston, where she met and formed lasting friendships with Marie Parker and Lisa Conley.

In 1986, Gayle was a member of the Clewiston Merchant Association where she participated in the development of the Sugar Festival, a city-wide celebration showcasing the community and showing appreciation to the sugar industry.

She later worked with the Hendry County School Board, holding instructional, clerical and administrative positions. During her tenure with Clewiston High School she reconnected and became close friends with her former teacher, Isabelle Belton. They shared many intimate conversations over lunch with lots of laughs, especially when Mr. Belton would join them.

Gayle loved to sing in church and cherished the time she served as a Sunday school teacher for the adult class at Clewiston Gospel Ministries.

Gayle loved to laugh and be silly, especially with her family and grandchildren. She took delight in making others laugh and often said she wished she could have been a stand-up comedian. She had a talent for interior design and always had the perfect outfit and accessories for any occasion.

In her final weeks, she found peace and tranquility sitting on her porch and spent her last days surrounded by her children and family at her daughter’s home.

Gayle is survived by her husband, Mike, daughters Belinda Lee of Georgiana, AL, Rebecca (Eric) Price of Belleview, FL, Sarah Pittman of Zolfo Springs, FL, step-daughter Maureen (Donnie) Creagh of LaBelle, FL. Sister Oveida (Paul) Shackelford, sisters in law, Vicky and Joann Baldree, and sister in love, Sue (Randy) Baldridge.

Grandchildren Kamie (Caleb), Chelsa, Alan, Wesley, Rusty, Jase, Jonathan, Alivia, Rachel, Donnie and Jazlyn. Great grandchildren Samantha, Gracelyn, Liam, Joshua and Micah.

Many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents A.P. Baldree and Frances Deese, brothers Pat and Mike Baldree and beloved caregiver Rebecca Castleberry.

More than anything, she loved her family and doing her part to leave the world better than she found it. After losing both her brothers, Gayle vowed to live life in color. We ask that you please honor her by choosing colorful attire for the memorial service.

Cayman Turtle Schooner By Bob Kranich

Florida Keys’ Watercolor Kapers
by Bob Kranich

The Cayman Turtle Schooner, (Part 16, Excerpt 84)

This is a story, titled The Cayman Turtle Schooner. This story will tell about the forming and history of the Cayman Islands, the green sea turtle’s habits and life style, the building of a dugout canoe, and then a schooner, and lastly about the historic two-masted turtle schooner, A. M. Adams. They just dropped off the freedom fighters on a beach in Cuba and as they are leaving they are sighted by a Spanish gunboat.

Just then a puff of smoke came from a front gunport, and then a bang! There was a splash of a cannon ball just in front of their schooner.

“We could, Sir, but we can’t out run that!” as he pointed to where the cannon balls ripples were still in sight.

“Drop sails, Thomas. That will let them know we are not running,” Parker commanded.

“Aye aye, Sir. Drop sails men, real fast!” Thomas commanded.

The sails came down. The Saint Sebastian just sat there, rocking with the swells. The Spanish ship came into hailing distance.

“Ahoy there!” came a call from the Spanish ship, “Prepare to be boarded.”

A large quarter boat rowed by eight men in Spanish naval uniforms and two officers, one in the front and one in the rear, was fast approaching. They came alongside. The two officers and four men came aboard. Thomas and Parker met them. The two officers stepped forward. The four men had rifles and were right behind by the rail in a row.

One officer, who appeared to be senior, asked, “Who is Captain?”

Parker said, “I am Captain Parker of the Saint Sebastian, out of the Cayman Islands.”

“Senor, I am Major Dominique. I represent His Royal Majesty of Spain and the Spanish Governor of Cuba. You are trespassing in Spanish Cuban waters. What do you have to say for yourselves?”

“Sir,” Parker offered, “We were just trying to catch some green turtles.”

“A likely story,” the Spanish officer said. “We saw you. You were too far into shore. You were dropping off filibusters? Yes?”
Parker said, “No sir, we were after green turtles.”

The commanding officer turned to the officer behind him, “Lieutenant, you will take this prize capture to Havana. I will leave these four men with you. His men will sail the schooner and this man, Captain Parker, will be tied and locked up. His men will be impressed into the Spanish Navy. This captain will like Havana’s Morro Castle. But it is a pity he will probably hang for delivering filibusters. We’ve got to cast off, so take over, we’re already late for our visit to Santiago de Cuba.”

“Si, Senior!” The Spanish Lieutenant saluted.

The ranking one went over the side into the longboat and they pushed off hastily heading back to their ship.

The Spanish lieutenant said to two of the Spanish sailors, “Carlos, Sanchez, take the captain below, tie him up and lock him in the cabin. Pedro, Domingo, watch these men. Who is the first mate?”

Thomas stepped forward, “Me, sir.”

“Very good. Sails up and set a course for the western tip of Cuba. Due west and south of the Isle of Pines.

“Aye, Sir. Men, let’s get the sails up,” Thomas commanded. But there was a noticeable slowness in the men’s response.

The two sailors were talking Spanish and motioned for Parker to lead. He opened the hatch and went down the ladder. The two men followed.

Parker said, “This is the way.” That’s when he realized they spoke no English.

He opened the door to his cabin. They followed him in, tied his hands behind him, and then motioned for him to lie in his cot. Next they tied his ankles together. They went out speaking Spanish. They closed the door and he could hear them gibbering in their language, which Parker couldn’t understand. He guessed they were trying to find a way to lock the door from the outside. Then he could hear them leaving and climbing back up the ladder.

He thought, they must have improvised something.

He could feel the Saint Sebastian swinging around. He decided, that while they are getting accustomed to his ship he needed to act fast. He didn’t want to hang in Havana or even visit the dreaded Morro Castle Prison.

He rolled around and got the hammock swinging...Bang! He fell out onto the floor. Ouch! That hurt, he thought.

He laid still for a moment to make sure no one had heard the sound. Then he scrunched and bent until he was sitting up. Then he tapewormed his way pushing with his two legs and sliding with his bottom. He came up to a couple of storage drawers, built into the side of the ship. He turned his back to them, took hold of a handle pull on the bottom one, and pulled with his fingers. The drawer came open. He got up on his knees and reached in until he found the knife. With his fingers he picked it up. He then held it with his hand and backed up and stuck it into a timber of the ship. After that he just put the rope on the blade and sawed through. Hands free, the leg ropes came off easy.

He looked around. Parker thought, what next? If I could slip off the boat and head for shore, I could join up with Major Monce’s group. Anything is better than the alternative.

He looked around. There was a glass window port in the rear. It was large enough for him to slip through. He took down the hammock and cut the ropes from both ends. Then he tied them together It would be long enough. There was a small chair. He tied the rope to it and set it below the window port. He tied the rope to his belt, opened the port, slipped through, and did a somersault. The chair came up to the port, and stopped there with a slam, hanging against the window. Parker came to a sudden stop swinging there back and forth out the rear of the ship, in the air, just over the water. He held on to the rope with one hand, cut the rope with the knife he had taken with him, and quietly let himself down into the water.
Immediately the Saint Sebastian pulled away from him as he treaded water. He was fortunate the seas were calm with only slight swells. Parker took one last look at the schooner, then he started to slowly swim toward the shore, far in the distance. It was then he realized there was something wrong with his shoulder. It was cramping. He must have injured it when he fell off the hammock. He stopped swimming and treaded water. He had to make it to shore somehow. He started to pull with his good arm.

Sebastian had just arrived from Nicaragua. He was diving down and eating some of the good sweet sea grass. He decided he had eaten enough and would dive down and swim out some. He took a deep breath and went down, down. He held his breath for quite a while, then pulling with strong front flippers he shot up to the surface.

Parker had been pulling with his good arm, then taking a deep breath and just floating. His one arm was hurting and cramping real bad. It looked like he hadn’t gotten any closer to the shore. He set out again with his tiring good arm. He said out loud, “I don’t think I’m going to make it...God, please help me!”

Google Paying $700 Million After Anti-Competitive Charges By States

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.—Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody, along with a coalition of 52 other attorneys general, secured $700 million from Google over the company’s anticompetitive conduct.

Attorney General Moody and the coalition’s lawsuit alleged that Google unlawfully monopolized the market for the distribution of Android apps, monopolized the in-app payment market and tied Google Play Billing to the use of Google Play. Of the $700 million, it is estimated that affected Floridians will receive tens of millions of dollars.

Google will pay $630 million in restitution to consumers harmed by the company’s anticompetitive practices who made purchases on the Google Play Store between August 2016 and September 2023. Google will pay the states an additional $70 million to resolve each state’s sovereign claims.

Those eligible for restitution do not have to submit a claim. Affected consumers will receive automatic payments through PayPal or Venmo, unless they elect to receive a check or ACH transfer. Additional details about the fund distribution process will be forthcoming. The action also requires Google to make its business practices more procompetitive in a number of important ways. The agreement and notice plan are subject to court approval.

This Week From The CDC

Respiratory Illnesses Are on the Rise

Respiratory illness activity is rapidly increasing across the United States, yet vaccination rates for COVID-19, influenza, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) remain low. Millions of people may get sick in the next month or two, and low vaccination rates means more people will get more severe disease. Getting vaccinated now can help prevent hospitalizations and save lives.

CDC is reaching out to healthcare providers and clinicians to encourage them to recommend all patients receive all respiratory immunizations they are eligible for. On December 14, CDC issued a Health Alert Network (HAN) advisory to raise awareness about respiratory illness activity and urge action. To increase vaccination coverage, COVID-19 vaccines are available at no cost to people who are uninsured or underinsured through the Bridge Access Program.

Respiratory illness activity is rising

COVID-19 hospitalizations are rising quickly. Since the summer, public health officials have been tracking a rise in multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C), which is caused by COVID-19. Influenza activity is growing in most parts of the country. RSV activity remains high in many areas. In some parts of the country, hospital beds for children are already nearly as full as they were this time last year. If these trends continue, the situation at the end of this month could again strain emergency departments and hospitals, as it did in winter 2022-2023. Strain on the healthcare system could mean that patients with other serious health conditions may face delays in receiving care.

On December 14, CDC issued a Health Alert Network (HAN) advisory to healthcare providers and public health officials highlighting the increased respiratory disease activity occurring in the United States, particularly in the southern part of the country, and internationally. The HAN noted that low vaccination rates for COVID-19, influenza, and RSV could lead to more severe disease and a strained healthcare system for the rest of the season. These low rates can also lead to more days of missed work and school.

There’s still time to get vaccinated. Talk with your trusted healthcare provider about which vaccines you and your loved ones need to stay healthy this holiday season and into the new year. Find out more.

Antonio Sanchez Guilty In Clewiston Bank Robbery

Clewiston (December 4, 2023) – Antonio Jesus Sanchez, of Clewiston, has been adjudicated guilty of Robbery While Wearing a Mask and sentenced to 30 years in prison, the maximum sentence. He was sentenced Friday, immediately after the jury returned the guilty verdict, following a two-day trial in Hendry County.

On the morning of March 29, 2022, a man walked into the First Bank in Clewiston, wearing a mask and a hat to conceal his identity. He demanded a teller put money in a bag, while pointing to a walkie talkie underneath his vest, as if it were a gun. The teller gave him cash and he ran out of the bank.

Officers with the Clewiston Police Department arrived on scene and were able to make a positive identification of the suspect, as Antonio Jesus Sanchez, through a review of video and witness descriptions.

A search warrant was obtained for the defendant’s home and executed by the Clewiston Police Department and FBI. Detectives and FBI Agents located items inside that matched what the defendant was wearing and holding in the bank robbery video. They also found a pillowcase with more than $2,000 in it, on his bed, and the defendant had exactly $1,000 in $100 bills on his person, matching money denominations stolen from the bank.

Assistant State Attorney Evan Chaput prosecuted the case.

The Cayman Turtle Schooner, (Part 15, Excerpt 83)

This is a story, titled The Cayman Turtle Schooner. This story will tell about the forming and history of the Cayman Islands, the green sea turtle’s habits and life style, the building of a dugout canoe, and then a schooner, and lastly about the historic two-masted turtle schooner, A. M. Adams. They have sold their turtles in Key West. But now are approached by a person leading some fighters that want to go to Cuba to help in the revolution against the Spanish. They decide as a crew to take the fighters to Cuba. But as they leave they are sighted by a Spanish gunboat.

Captain Monce came over, his men gathering around the pile of tents and other items. “Gentlemen, this is Captain Parker. He has been kind enough to offer us transportation, so we can free Cuba. Please give him your attention and respect. Captain Parker, we are ready.”

“Ok men, listen up! Four men to each boat, Two will row with us. We’ll load those persons’ personal gear and some equipment.”

“Captain Parker,” Monce spoke up. “Captain, if we could load one of those crates in each boat first.”

“Yes, Major. Have your men load them. Keep the items down low and centered!”

They went back and forth four times with the two boats. Half way through, Parker and his three swapped jobs with Thomas and Benji. It was mid-afternoon when they weighed anchor.

“Thomas, it looks like due southwest will take us right off the west coast of Cuba, right where we were a couple of days back. God willing we shall make these two hundred and fifty miles in a little over twenty-four hours,” Parker commented.

“Aye aye, Sir,” Thomas responded.

“What I want to do is four-hour shifts and only two men on a rest per shift.”

“Aye aye, Sir.”
“Captain Monce,” Parker called.

“Yes, Captain.”

“Do your men have food? We have enough water for us and them to get to Trinidad,” Parker asked.

“Yes, Captain, I’ve got enough military rations to get us there and then for a couple of days. It’s not fancy, but we’ll live. We have to link up with Carlos Manuel de C’espedes’ forces.”

“Good, we’ll sail as fast as the Good Lord will allow,” Parker added.

“Captain Parker, please keep a safe distance from the west side of Cuba. We don’t want to be picked up by a Spanish warship before we have a chance to fight!”

“Don’t worry, Sir. We don’t want that either!” Parker exclaimed.

They swung around western Cuba. It was a hundred miles on the circumference of a great circle.

Thomas informed Parker, “It’s a straight shot east-northeast to Trinidad, Sir, and less that two hundred miles to go. We should be there tomorrow at this same time.”

Parker could see that at least one-half of the volunteers who had been seasick were starting to recover. They really didn’t need as much food as they first thought.

“Land Ho! Straight ahead,” Benji sung out.

“It’s my homeland at last!” Sergeant Salizar said with feeling. “Now I will be able to help the revolution. You know it’s the poor Creoles born in Cuba against the Spanish merchants and the forces of the Spanish king.”

“Captain Parker,” Major Monce said. “There is a small harbor with a dock. There is a small village there, and Trinidad is farther back.”

“Just one second, Major,” Parker said as he motioned to Thomas. They stepped over to the rail in the rear. “Benji take the wheel,” Thomas commanded.

“What do you think Thomas, dock or unload with the Turtle boats?” Parker asked.

“I’ve been pondering that very thought, Captain. If I could suggest, here’s what I would do. Let Sergeant Salizar go first with four men to a boat and equipment. Kind of a reverse loading. Last trip, one boat with Major Monce, four of us, and his two crates of guns.”

Parker added, “Sounds good. We don’t want him to start a Navy with the Saint Sebastian as their first ship. Also he’s to pay us before he leaves the ship.”

Parker went over to Major Monce and told him the debarking procedures. He could see the Major wasn't too happy, but he had no recourse.

As they entered the harbor, they could see a grouping of small white-washed mud brick houses with orange tile roofs. The Escambray Mountains loomed straight ahead towering over the small seaside village. The unloading went off uneventful. While on shore Sergeant Salizar was organizing his volunteers.

“Ok, Major Monce, we’ve got your guns loaded. We’re going in,” Parker said. As he was coming back from his cabin where he had hidden the pieces of silver Monce had paid him.

“Thomas, you and George stow the other Turtle boat. Prepare to sail just as soon as we get back.”

“Aye aye, Sir.”

Parker, Benji and their other two men rowed in and tied up to the dock. Sergeant Salizar had some men from the line he had formed come down and lift the crates out of the boat.

Parker said to his men, “Prepare to cast off men. I’ll be right back.”
As he shook hands with Major Monce, he said, “Major, good luck, and God go with you.”
"Thank you
"
"Thank you, Captain Parker, and good sailing," He then turned and headed towards Sergeant Salizar who had opened both crates and was issuing rifles and bandoleers of ammunition. Parker could see a couple of new faces, men dressed in white, loose fitting clothes with large brimmed hats. They had rifles slung over their shoulders and bandoleers of ammunition across their chests. They were talking to Major Monce.

Parker’s men had the turtle boat untied. He stepped in and Benji followed, giving the boat a push off from the dock. It didn’t take the four of them very long to row out to the schooner. As they we’re hoisting up the turtle boat, Thomas said, “Weigh anchor! Sails up!”

“Good work, Thomas,” Parker commented, “Let’s get on home!”

“It looks like it’s about two hundred miles south-southwest, Captain,”

Thomas reported, as he stood there with both hands on the wheel.

They headed straight out to sea from the Trinidad area. They had been sailing just for twenty or thirty minutes, when Benji cried out, “Sail Ho! Some smoke too! Off the starboard Captain.”

Thomas gave Parker his telescope, and Parker went over to the rail. He saw a large two-masted ship, but it had a smoke stack in the center between the two masts. It was bearing straight for them. He handed the telescope to Thomas and took the wheel.

“What do you make of it, Thomas?” Parker asked.

“Doesn’t look too good, Sir. Looks like a Spanish gunboat. I can see gun ports lining the side and the Spanish flag. This one is both sail and steam power, and I can see the iron plate on her sides.”

“Think we can outrun them?”
