Clewiston Sugar Festival Attendance Down

Lots Of Fun With Slimmer Crowds This Year

CLEWISTON, FL. -- The Clewiston Sugar Festival, sponsored in large part every April by Clewiston's U.S. Sugar Corporation, is an annual event celebrating the town's primary industry, the growing of sugarcane and noting the end of the cane harvest each year.

Clewiston, America's Sweetest Town, and Hendry county's largest municipality rolled out the carpet once again Saturday with lots of fun, music and food for all. Plenty of arts and crafts and exhibitors this year, along with maybe the largest collection of antique, classic and "hot rod" cars and trucks on display in one place, a big draw for visitors.

Attendance, although lower than past years, might have been helped a bit as travelers passed through Clewiston and down State Road 80 and U.S. 27 because of the road closings due to smoke along State Road 29 and Alligator Alley this weekend.

Former Hendry County resident known as "NaplesCritic" Paul, showed up at the Sugar Festival to record it live on the internet using a netbook computer and a webcam Saturday. See Paul's Festival car show video above. Paul now lives in Naples and was joined by wife and his mother to take in the Festival and record it live on his webcam broadcast website at http://justin.tv/naplescritic

Under his leadership, the Corporation not only prospered by tripling its production, but he led the way in charitable giving to the surrounding communities of swimming pools, youth centers, an auditorium, day care facilities, housing projects and multiple scholarship programs.

Two of his proudest achievements during his tenure as President were the creation of an Employee Stock Ownership Plan whereby the employees would own 47% of the Corporation and the commencement of the diversification of the Corporation into the growing/processing of citrus.

John was the beloved and respected leader of the sugar industry as noted by the numerous accolades that he accumulated and/or achieved during his career which included "Sugar Man of the Year', Florida Agriculture Hall of Fame, Honorary Doctor of Humanities-Florida Atlantic University, "White Hat" award by Agribusiness Institute, President of the Florida Sugar Cane League, President of the Florida Sugar Marketing and Terminal Association, State Director of Florida Chamber of Commerce, Council of 100, Florida Land Council, Florida Farm Bureau, 1975 Citizen of the Year for Clewiston, Florida and Dedication of the Sugar Festival in 1992.

Jennifer Black New Community Relations Manager At U.S. Sugar

CLEWISTON, FL. -- U.S. Sugar announced the addition of Wellington resident Jennifer Black as its new community relations manager.  She will assist in general communications, work with our local officials and be responsible for local corporate community activities such as coordinating U.S. Sugar’s local contributions activities, local tours in conjunction with the Clewiston Chamber of Commerce, corporate golf tournaments as well as participating in Sugar Festival events and other special projects in the community.

“We’re excited to welcome Mrs. Black to our community and to our Public Affairs team,” said Judy Sanchez, senior director, corporate communications and public affairs.  “As an avid equestrienne, she’s been a part of the western Palm Beach County community and we look forward to bringing someone with her agri-business background and experiences even further west to enhance our community relations efforts.”

“This is an opportunity for our company as well as our community to let others know what a sweet place we have here,” Sanchez said.  “Jennifer Black will be a great asset in enhancing our community relations efforts through expanding local tours and social media messaging.”

A Florida native born in Key West, Black grew up in Wellington, Florida.  Prior to joining U.S. Sugar, Black was an integral part of the planning and management team for the Palm Beach International Agricultural Summit, an original event showcasing Palm Beach County agriculture that drew more than 1,100 participants.  Black also has experience as a systems supervisor for a global logistics firm and social media manager for an American design company.  She is a licensed real estate agent in Florida.

Black and her husband are part of the equestrian community in Wellington.  Horseback riding is a lifelong passion.  She also enjoys world traveling, canoeing and exploring the outdoors and educating others on animal welfare issues.

Black has a master’s in Agribusiness from the University of Florida and a bachelor’s of science degree in Business Administration from Lynn University.  She graduated with an International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma in Sweden.  She has volunteered with The Open Door and Mentors for Teen Mothers.
