Large Fires Out In South Hendry County

LABELLE, FL. -- Hendry county received between one and two inches of rainfall over the weekend helping to put out the large fires burning in forest lands in southern Hendry and eastern Collier county. According to Gerry LaCavera of the Florida Division of Forestry the wildfires in Picayune Strand State Forest (Collier County) and Okaloacoochee Slough State Forest (Hendry County) are 100% contained. The fire in Big Cypress is now 90% contained at 63,599 acres.

LaCavera, a wildfire management specialist with the department, says although the wildfire risk was temporarily lowered by the rainfall received over the weekend, high winds and high temperatures could raise the risk again by mid-week even without additional rainfall.
