$18 Million SR80 Road Project For Hendry County

New Construction Begins At State Road 80 And U.S. 27 Near Clewiston

CLEWISON, FL. -- The Florida Department of Transportation begins construction of a new interchange this month on State Road 80 at US 27, west of Clewiston, as part of the Florida Department of Transportation's Strategic Intermodal System and Florida coast-to-coast transportation plan.

US 27 was recently resurfaced a few mile east from Stitt Ranch to this project's eastern limits and from this project's northern limits to Old US 27.  The new interchange ties together the newly resurfaced roadway.

This project modifies the SR 80/US 27 intersection with an elevated "T" overpass for SR 80 eastbound traffic to US 27 northbound and for US 27 northbound traffic to SR 80 westbound.  The project realigns US 27 and widens 3/4 mile of SR 80 to four lanes.  These improvements, along with a new traffic signal and lighting, enhance traffic operation at this intersection according to the Florida Department of Transportation officials.

Initially, crews will construct temporary lanes for US 27 traffic in the median (adjacent to existing US 27 southbound lanes).  Traffic shifts to these lanes for approximately 14 months while crews build the new bridge for the SR 80 "T" overpass to the east.

Crews will construct two new westbound SR 80 travel lanes to the north of the existing SR 80 roadway. Existing SR 80 lanes will be resurfaced and become eastbound travel lanes.  Widened shoulders will provide for emergency stopping and a 64-foot median will separate existing and new
lanes.

Other project activity includes construction of retention ponds, ramp connections and resurfacing SR 80.  Crews are scheduled to work during daytime hours.  No night work is anticipated.
