What You Don't Know About Donald Trump And Ambassador Joseph E. Davies

Joseph Davies was the Ambassador to Russia from 1936 to 1938 and wrote the pro-Stalin best selling book Mission to Moscow in 1941. His wife, Marjorie Merriweather Post, was the wealthy heiress of the Post cereal fortune, who built Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida in the 1920s, where Trump now lives.

She divorced him in 1955. After Davies passed away in 1958, Post remained the estate’s owner until her death in 1973. She intended for Mar-a-Lago to become a presidential retreat, and gave the property to the United States, but the U.S. government later declined the offer.

In 1985, Donald Trump purchased Mar-a-Lago and transformed it into a private club while maintaining a private residence there. Davies lived there with his wife. Trump later became its owner, and the property has become the President's Florida "Whitehouse."

There’s no clear evidence that Donald Trump has publicly expressed admiration for Ambassador Joseph E. Davies. However, there are some potential reasons why Trump might have found Davies interesting if he were aware of him:

Pro-Soviet Stance – Davies was known for his sympathetic views toward the Soviet Union, particularly Joseph Stalin, which could align with Trump’s controversial stance on U.S.-Russia relations.

Wealth and Influence – Like Trump, Davies was a wealthy businessman who transitioned into politics and diplomacy. Davies was the head of the first Federal Trade Commission.

Government Service – Both held significant political roles: Davies as an ambassador and Trump as President of the United States.

Interest in Foreign Relations – Davies dealt with U.S.-Soviet relations during a critical time, while Trump’s presidency was marked by high-profile dealings with Russia and other global powers.

Communication Style – Both were known for expressing strong opinions; Davies wrote extensively about his experiences, while Trump is known for his outspoken nature, especially on social media.

Media and Public Image – Davies wrote the book best selling book Mission to Moscow, which was later made into a film, promoting a pro-Stalin narrative of U.S.-Soviet relations. Trump, too, has been deeply involved in writing book, influencing media and shaping public perception and promoting relations with Russia.

However, Trump has never publicly mentioned Davies as an influence or someone he admires, but took the Davies Coat of Arms (granted to Davies in 1939) as a logo for the Trump Organization, changing "Integrity" to "Trump".

The Trump coat of arms doesn't meet the British standards. Saying so doesn't make it so.

    1. The Lord Lyon King of Arms, the Scottish authority regulating heraldry, in 2012 ruled that Trump could not use the emblem because it wasn’t officially granted to him. He tried to use it at his golf course in Scotland

    2. No surprise. But respecting rules and traditions have never been a strength for Trump.
