Environmental Groups Gather In LaBelle On Earth Day 2011
LABELLE, FL. -- Hendry County's Earth Day was celebrated Thursday April 21 at LaBelle's Civic Park. Featured booths included Hendry County Recycling, University of Florida/IFAS, Florida Division of Forestry, and Hendry County 4-H.
Activities were scheduled for the kids including free hot dogs and drinks, and five oak trees were planted in the park to celebrate National Arbor Day. 50 people carried away free oak trees in three-gallon buckets and everyone took home a bag of recycled products from Hendry County's Recycling Department.
Coolest item given away today? A calculator with no batteries or solar cell, getting it's power instead by shaking ita few dozen times to produce energy stored in an internal capacitor to make it operate.
Other sponsors for the day included Hendry-LaBelle Recreation Board, LaBelle Rotary Club, Kiwanis Club of LaBelle, Hendry Audubon, Hendry Sheriff's Office, Clarke Mosquito Control, and the Port LaBelle Utility Conservation Project.
