FORT MYERS, FL. -- Roberto Lopez Jr., aged of Tampa died after a crash Sunday morning on I-75 south of Alico Rd in Lee County.
A 2004 Chevy Trailblazer driven by Roberto Lopez Sr., 55 of Tampa was traveling north on I75 (SR 93) approaching the 127 MM in the inside lane (left lane) when the vehicle had a tread separation and Lopez lost control of the vehicle.
As a result, it started to rotate and it traveled onto the median of I-75, slid into the shoulder and began to overturn.
It overturned over the center cable barrier, into the southbound lanes of travel, overturned several more times, ejecting the child from the vehicle and came to rest across the inside and center, southbound lanes of I-75.
The child was ejected north of the vehicle to the median shoulder. The child was transported to Lee Memorial as a trauma and later died at the hospital as a result of his injuries.
I-75 southbound, inside and center lanes were closed for approximately 2 hours for the investigation. Charges are pending investigation.
Lopez Sr. and passenger Madelin Nunez, 44 of Tampa were in serious condition at Lee Memorial Hospital.
