ALVA, FL. -- Sari Alfadil, 19 of Fort Myers died as a result of a crash Saturday afternoon on State Road 80 near Alva involving a forklift traveling at slow speed on the four-lane highway.
A forklift driven by Nathanial Thompson, 56 of Fort Myers and a 2002 Chevy Blazer driven by Alfadil were traveling eastbound about 2:22 p.m. on the outside lane of SR 80 east of Bateman Road.
The forklift was directly in front of the Chevy. Both were traveling at a speed very slow for the roadway that was being traveled.
Richard Long, 51 of Okeechobee was traveling eastbound on the outside lane of SR 80 approaching the location of the forklift and the Chevy but could not observe the two vehicles traveling at an extremely slow rate of speed until very close to the rear of the Chevy.
Long attempted to avoid the Chevy by maneuvering to the left but a collision could not be avoided. Subsequently, the front portion of his vehicle collided with the rear portion of the Chevy driven by Alfadil, which was propelled in an east direction as it rotated clockwise.
The left side of the Chevy then collided with the rear portion of the forklift which came to rest facing east while occupying the eastbound outside lane of SR 80, east of Bateman Road.
The forklift then rotated counter-clockwise, as it traveled slightly southeast, then overturned and came to rest facing north in the south grass shoulder of SR 80, east of Bateman Road. The forklift driver and Long had no injuries.
Charges are pending investigation.
