Rock Climber Falls - Rescue Near Las Vegas Tuesday

LAS VEGAS, NV. - A rock climber at the Red Rock Canyon Conservation Ares west of Las Vegas slipped and fell resulting in dozens of mountain rescue teams from Clark County, Nevada to bring him off the mountain rock by a Las Vegas Metropolitan Police helicopter.

The accident took place at noon local time in the Spring Mountains in the Mohave Desert at the Calico Tanks Trail, a popular rock climbing location along the area's 13 mile Scenic Drive.

Rescue crews climbing up the face of the mountain, and coordinating the climber's rescue included Las Vegas Fire & Rescue's Technical Rescue Team, Las Vegas Metroplitan Police Department, and the Bureau of Land Management's Park Ranger.

The rock climber's condition is unknown at this time, but reportedly they were conscious during the two hour rescue finally by helicopter.

The BLM Ranger said today that accidents are not uncommon in the area, especially at this time of year when the desert temperatures are cooler and rock climbers flock to the Red Rock Conservation Area. There were about a dozen climbers observed on various other mountain sides in the area at the time of this accident.

The Red Rock Canyon Conservation Area is owned by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management and encompasses 2,000 or more rock climbing sites for adventurers. A very popular area, the BLM requires advanced reservations to visit.

Wrecker's Tale - Florida Keys' Watercolor Kapers

Florida Keys’ Watercolor Kapers
 by Bob Kranich

Wrecker’s Tale, (Part 8, Excerpt 59)

This is a new story, titled “Wrecker’s Tale”. Captain Dan Benson is the captain of a two-masted schooner , the Jenney Mae. His schooner is used to take his pineapples from his plantation to market and also wrecking. Wrecking means he will go out to a shipwreck and save people, ship, and cargo. It is an additional lucrative business because of the many storms and the reefs along the Keys. He and his sailing crew are running a load of pineapples through the Caribbean and up to New York. Two pirate ships are about to attack them.

Wrecker’s Tale

As soon as the slips were unloaded, the boat crew started planting and the land crew went down to Plantation Key to harvest pineapples.

At the end of the second day, Captain Dan asked, “What do you think, John, we’ve about got it all planted.”

“Yes, Sir. Benjamin has got a couple men on the last two rows. It’s looking good. Here they come now, Sir. They’re a tired looking crew.”

Captain Dan stepped towards the men and waved. “Men, you’ve done real fine. Climb up on the wagon, and let’s get back to the cabin. We’ll clean up and eat. I hope the cook is ready!”

While eating, John said to the Captain, “The schooner should be arriving soon. Sir, do you want me to make the wagon ready?”

“Yes John, and tell you what. Have our boat crew get any belongings they may need. Tell them that we’ll sleep on board this evening and leave at first light. I appreciate the fact that they have worked hard. But they know as well as I do we’ve got to move those pineapples to market.”

“Aye aye, Sir! We’ll be ready to leave on the half hour!”

The horse, wagon, and boat crew pulled up to the dock.

John said, “Look Sir, the schooner’s already in, and there be the sloop coming through the channel.”

One of the schooner’s longboats was just pulling off. They could see Jonathan standing up in the boat. His men were dipping the oars. They guided up to the dock and tied up.

Jonathan said, “Hello, Captain, John. Hi, men.” His men grabbed their duffels and headed towards the wagon.

“How’s it look, Jonathan?” Dan said.

“Very fine, Sir. A right good-looking batch of pineapples,” Jonathan exclaimed, “I do hope the cook has a bit of grub for us.”

John said, “He’s holding up for you. It was a real fine meal!”

“One thing, Captain. Did you and the crew just arrive? I mean did you have anyone up here before you just arrived on the wagon?”

“The reason I ask is as we were coming through the channel, Roberts there had his glass trained on the harbor and thought he saw two figures on the pier.”

“That’s right, Sir. Two of ‘em, they was. You know I got a good glass. Just like I saw that sloop,” Roberts piped in. “Beg your pardon, Sir.”

“Thanks, Roberts,” Captain Dan said, “Jonathan, as soon as Roberts gets his eating and cleaning done, bring him back. We’re going to need him to go a’sailin’ with us.”

“Thank ye kindly, Sir,” Roberts said with a grin.

“Jonathan, keep a sharp eye. We will too. Could be those pirates that followed us out of Cuba. I’ll post a watch tonight. You do the same. After we leave make sure a couple of men are out here on the boats keeping a good lookout. Better arm them. Now we best get out to the boat, and you get your men up to the cook shack.”

As the long boat pulled up to the schooner they hailed the sloops crew. They were heading towards the pier, a waiting wagon, and a well-deserved supper.

As they climbed on board they could smell the aroma of fresh fruit. It was a quiet night. The schooner rocked in gentle swells. Dan had the men take a ship’s watch, two men every two hours. It was an uneventful night.

About five a. m., Captain Dan said to John, “How about we rustle the men out. Get the cook to making some coffee, and we’ll get some wind in these here sails.”

“We’ll use the jib, foresail, and the mainsail through the channel. After we get out into the deep water then put them all on and we’ll get to cracking!”

“Aye aye, Sir!” John acknowledged.

It was about an hour into their trip, “Sail, Sir!” Roberts hollered down from the perch on the main mast. “She’s up ahead. Just came out of the harbor on portside. There’s another, it’s smaller. If I’m not mistaken, Sir, the larger one is the same Cuban sloop.”

They could see the two white triangles in contrast to the green palms in their rear on the shore.

“Looks like they are aiming to head us off. Planning to cross our bow, Sir,” John said.

“John, put everything we got up, the forestay sail and gaff, top and main. We’ll try to outrun them.”

“Everything is up and out, Sir.”

“Make sure all the lines are taunt. We’ll need all we can get. Now I want the two breach-loading swivel guns at the two bow positions. Pre-load them and keep them out of sight in the chests.”

“Sir,” Roberts pointed out, “See the smallest sloop has crossed our stern. They’re trying to come at us from both sides. She’s much smaller and slower.”

John said, “Look, Captain, the big sloop on the land side is using their square rigging top side. She’s pretty fast.”

Cuban pirate ship:

“Captain Gomez, she’s fast!” Carlos pointed out.

“Don’t you worry. We’ve got ‘em. Have the men stand by the four pounder on starboard side. Now get those ropes tightened on the jib! And be quick about it!”

They were converging on a point just forward of the schooner.

“Look Captain Dan. They’re flying the skull and crossbones!” John said as he pointed.

“Hold her steady, John,” Dan said.

“Fire!...Blam! The pirate’s four pounder released its cannon ball in a shower of sparks, flame, and smoke. It plunked into the water just forward of the Jenney Mae.

Captain Dan ordered, “John, put the two men and loaders forward. Tell them no swivel guns in view and no mounting until I give the order. Just as soon as they’re in place start to bring our flag down,* so they’ll think we’re heaving to.”*

The two boats were both racing along parallel to each other at nine knots, both at full sails. The pirate sloop eased closer.

The pirate captain, Gomez, cupped his hands. “Heave to! Or we’ll blow you out of the water!”

RSW Airport Closed - Flat Tire Creates Massive Mess

FORT MYERS, FL. -- Southwest Florida International Airport's runway is closed until 7 p.m. tonight according to the FAA.

A United Airlines flight from Newark, N.J. had a flat tire upon landing at the RSW airport's single runway (06/24) this morning at 11 a.m., causing all operations, departures and arrivals to be halted.

Thousands of passengers were stranded in the terminal all day, and many presumably missed connections at hub airports they were flying to. Other passengers enroute to Fort Myers found themselves in Miami or Fort Lauderdale. One Delta passenger at Fort Myers said the airline offered a free meal to her as compensation for the inconvenience.

The jet, apparently landing to the southwest on runway 24, stopped a bit more than half way down the 12,000 foot runway, ending up on a taxiway near the 168 foot high control tower.

The Lee County Port Authority failed to notify the public of the runway closure problem on either it's Facebook page or the LCPA website. No announcements were made at all in the terminal building to notify passengers of the runway being closed so no flight could take off. Lots of announcements were made, however, about making sure pets were on a leash or in a pet carrier in the terminal building.

The United flight was the last plane to land today at RSW while Spirit flight to Detroit took off a few minutes before, and was the last plane to depart this morning.

One fully loaded Delta Airline flight was waiting on the taxiway ready to depart when passengers were told there would be a delay. It never got off the ground as all aircraft were grounded. Lee County Airport Authority personnel, fire trucks and emergency vehicles lined the field around the United Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft all afternoon.

Arrivals today were being diverted to other airports in South Florida.

UPDATE: The FAA revised the notice for the closed runway until 7:59 P.M. The first planes have now departed, a Flexjet private jet and a United Parcel jet. Two arrivals are scheduled for tonight and a full normal schedule continuing tomorrow morning.

Hotline For Reporting Derelict And Abandoned Boats

FWC creates hotline to address thousands of vessels displaced by Hurricane Ian

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has established a hotline for reporting displaced vessels still on Florida state waters because of Hurricane Ian.

When Hurricane Ian swept across the state, thousands of vessels were displaced by wind and storm surge. Some were pushed ashore, some damaged in marinas and private docks, others relocated but still afloat and some partially or fully sunken.

Photo: Derelict Boat On Caloosahatchee River - Aerial Photo by Don Browne

“We take this matter seriously and understand the hardship that Hurricane Ian has placed upon our residents,” said Boating and Waterways Section Leader Maj. Rob Beaton. “FWC officers are diligently working to determine the current number and ownership of storm-related displaced vessels across the state. We are committed to helping boat owners find their vessels and facilitate the removal of vessels from state waters that are posing a threat to the environment or blocking waterways.”

The FWC and partner agencies including the U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Department of Environmental Protection, Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, Department of Transportation, Division of Emergency Management and other federal, state and local agencies are working with vessel owners to remove or relocate these vessels.

The public can report vessels on Florida waters that are displaced or damaged by calling the Hurricane Ian Vessel Hotline at 850-488-5600, Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Callers should be prepared to provide the vessel’s registration number, current location and detailed description.

“These efforts will take time. While the majority of displaced vessels are in Charlotte, Collier and Lee counties, there are multiple counties affected on both coasts of the state,” said Coast Guard Cdr. Melanie Burnham, Incident Commander for the Marine Environmental Response. “We appreciate the cooperation of the boating public during this unprecedented recovery effort.”

Vessel owners are encouraged to hire a salvage company to recover their vessel to provide the safest method possible for the vessel and the environment. The removal of displaced vessels can hasten the recovery and overall resilience of native marine plants and animals.

Owners of vessels that have become derelict have 45 days from the day the hurricane passed over the state to either remove their boats from waters of the state or bring it into a non-derelict condition. It’s important for boat owners to know that they have options regarding the future of their vessel.

Owners of displaced vessels who lack the resources to have their boat repaired, or if their vessel is determined to be beyond repair, may release ownership of their vessel. This process can be initiated by contacting the FWC through the Hurricane Ian Vessel Hotline at 850-488-5600 and requesting to turn over a displaced vessel. An FWC representative will then contact the owner to explain the waiver process and facilitate the potential turnover of ownership.

Wrecker's Tale - Florida Keys' Watercolor Kapers

Florida Keys’ Watercolor Kapers
by Bob Kranich

Wrecker’s Tale, (Part 7, Excerpt 58)

This is a new story, titled “Wrecker’s Tale”. Captain Dan Benson is the captain of a two-masted schooner, the Jenney Mae. His schooner is used to take his pineapples from his plantation to market and also wrecking. Wrecking means he will go out to a shipwreck and save people, ship, and cargo. It is an additional lucrative business because of the many storms and the reefs along the Keys.

He and his sailing crew are returning from Cuba after purchasing pineapple slips to plant. As they leave Cuba a pirate ship follows behind, just out of sight, stalking them. They speed up and loose them. When Captain Dan gets into the Key West harbor he visits an old friend and purchases some armament.

Wrecker’s Tale

“Good Grief, Man! Do you think that they may be lurking about?” James asked.

“Don’t know. We may have lost them last night. But I’m going to be ready for them.”

“Well, Dan, I’ve still got a few back in the warehouse. I’ll clean them up and get you everything you need. If I’ve got them I’ll also give you the chests to store them, the grape, and powder on deck.”

“Thanks, James. My First Mate John can be found at the Key West Inn.”

“Don’t you worry, Dan. I’ll take care of it for you. I pray you don’t need to use them.”

Captain Dan literally skipped the short distance to his home. As he was coming up the walk his two girls and wife Jenney Mae, were outside to greet him.

“Hello, Dear, we saw your boat come into the harbor this morning. The girls have been going up to the captain’s walk a lot the last few days looking for you,” she said as she embraced him.

“This is so lovely, Dear,” the captain said as he put his arms out to hug the two girls who ran up to him.

The next morning came too soon.

“I’ll be a week or two, Jenney May. We have to plant the six thousand pineapple slips. It will take about an acre of land. We’ve got it ready. Then we have to harvest the old field on Plantation Key and immediately transport the pineapples up the East Coast as far as New York. I will send word by my field manager Jonathan as to my schedule.”
He said his goodbyes and hugs and went down the street. When he got to the dock one of his longboats was waiting for him.

“Good morning, John. You too, Benjamin and Roberts,” the captain said.

John announced, “Cap’n we’ve got the swivel guns secured. It kind of feels like we’re sailing a Man-of-War,”* he said jokingly,

“Sir. Benjamin and me’self went by Master James’ warehouse after the evening meal, and he gave us the guns, shot, and powder. They was all loaded in chests. Right smartly, I must say. We stowed them on deck and I’ve took the liberty to get the swivel mounts installed. You know Matthew is the best carpenter we’ve got. He said he knows just where to place and mount them. He’s working on it now, Sir,” he said proudly.

“One more item Cap’n. Jonathan will show it to you as I row out,” John stated. “Go to it, Benjamin.”

“Well Captain Dan, this here is the best tool to use to plant those pineapple slips. It’s a narrow bladed hoe.* We’ve bought four of them,” he said as he showed one of them to Captain Dan.

“Why is it so short, Benjamin?” the Captain asked.

“Sir, it needs to be short. You use it with one hand and grab a slip with the other. We only have to dig down three and one half to four inches. Since the hoe’s handle is twelve inches long, that is the distance between plantings. We don’t have to measure. One other thing, we should use double rows, if you please. Two foot between rows and well-staged will yield the most for the space.”

“Well done, men,” the Captain said.

Captain Dan climbed up on the schooner’s deck. He looked back at First Mate John and Benjamin and said, “Now, men, let’s get this Man-of-War up to Key Largo.”

On the way to Key Largo, the Captain and John looked over Matthew’s work on the swivel gun mounts.

Matthew explained, “Sir, even though we have only four cannons, I’ve built six mount locations. These swivel guns are lightweight. They’re only about seventy pounds apiece. Why, one man can pick ‘em up, and place ‘em from one side to other. Usually you’re only fir’n off one side. I’ve placed mounts, port, and starboard in front, two midd’lin and two aft. I feel that it should do it”

“Looks good, Matthew. Thank ye kindly,” the Captain said, “Now John, let’s look in these chests and see those guns.”

They opened a chest, “Capt’n I’ve already did some looking,” John said. “Two are like this. But two are strange looking. See over here.”

John opened the second chest, “Why, John,” the captain said. “These two are breach* loaders. You take this breach block out of the trough at the back of the gun, then throw in this pre-measured bag of grape. Put this bag of gun power behind the balls and push the breach block forward and lock it in place, like this. You can fire this gun twice as fast as the other muzzle* loaders.”

“Very good, Sir,” John exclaimed.

“John, we’ll wait till mid-morning. When we are away from any Key Wester’s hearing, we’ll have a class and then do some live firing. It looks like Master James got us up with plenty of powder and shot.”

“Ok, men, listen up and pay attention. The Captain’s going to give us a class on firing these here ‘big guns’,” he said, kind of smiling. “Any one got any experience?”

“Yep. Simon and I were in the U S Navy,” one of the men, Amos said. “We fired big bore guns, not those pop guns!”

“Well, Sir if it is ok with you,” another man, Clyde spoke up, “Confederate Navy, out of Mobile.”

Captain Dan stated, “It don’t matter what navy you were in. You’re manning the Jenney May now. We’re all Americans! Now listen up. You three experienced men will command and fire the guns. The rest of you are co-loaders. That leaves me at the wheel and John running the ship’s ropes. So let’s go through the mounting process, loading, aiming, and firing. Now remember to look to me to fire all at once. Do your best. Man the guns on the sea side.”

Captain yelled, “Fire!”...Blam! Blam! Blam! The smoke covered the deck on the starboard side.
Captain yelled again, “Reload!”… Fire!... Blam! Blam! Blam!

“OK, men,” the captain yelled. “Swab them out, and when they are cool, real cool, we’ll stow them back in their chests.”

“There’s the Key Largo harbor Capt’n,” the First Mate announced, “I see the sloop, Sir.”

As they sailed into the harbor and were lowering a longboat the wagon appeared on the beach. It pulled right up to the pier.

“Jonathan seen us, and come to give us a ride, Capt’n.”

The Captain gave the order to drop the anchors, and load up. They pulled their longboat up to the small dock.

“Hello, Captain, good to see you. I trust your trip was favorable,” Jonathan said with a welcome.

“Yes, Jonathan, we’ve got six thousand slips. We’ll get a good rest, and see what we can do in the morning.”

“Well, Sir, I think you will be pleased. The men have got the field cleared and ready to plant those slips,” Jonathan said proudly.

“Very good, Jonathan. Let’s get on to the plantation house. We’re famished.”

“The cook’s working on it, Sir. Let’s load up, men.”

When you’re tired and have a lot of work to do, the morning comes along very fast.

“Captain... Jonathan and I were talking,” First Mate John said as they were finishing their breakfast, “We can cut our time in half. We can take Benjamin and our crew and plant the slips up here in the new ground with those twelve inch hoes. While we’re doing that, Jonathan can take the schooner after we unload the slips, and he and his crew can start cutting pineapples.”

Jonathan added, “Sir, both crews should be finished in a couple of days.”

“A great idea, men!” The captain paused thinking...then said, “We’ll have to plan. Just as soon as the pineapples are put in the hold they will begin to ripen. We’ll have to leave for the East Coast immediately! John make sure we have provisions for a week.”

“Aye aye, Sir.”

“Men, let’s get going!” Captain Dan said enthusiastically.

Early Friday morning September 30, 2022, a report of concern about a missing mother of two young children came into Sheriff Whidden who immediately responded and acted.

The reporter told Sheriff Whidden her friend 39-year-old Katie Baunach stopped by her residence on Thursday September 29, 2022, and stepped out for a moment leaving her two young children at approximately 9:00 pm. Katie said she was going to run by her ex-husbands house to pick up a few things and be right back. She has not returned, nor has she had any phone communication with Katie. Investigation revealed Ian and Katie Baunach had a contentious relationship involving domestic violence.

The ex-husband was identified as 43-year-old Ian Baunach of Ft Denaud, Florida.

Sheriff Whidden sent a marked patrol car over to the residence of Ian Baunach, where Katie Baunach’s car was located in the driveway. After several attempts to make contact with either Katie or Ian failed, the patrol deputy left. Approximately forty-five (45) minutes later the patrol deputy again arrived at Ian Baunach’s residence and found Katie Baunach’ s vehicle had been moved and parked on the side of the road abandoned. The driveway gate was now locked to prevent any incoming traffic.

Detectives with the Hendry County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Unit and Major Crimes Unit quickly convened and drafted a search warrant for the residence of Ian Baunach, under suspicious exigent circumstances, to search for missing person, Katie Baunach. A call was placed to Ian Baunach as deputies approached his residence. Ian was seen pacing in front of his house and refused entry to the deputies. The driveway gate was breached and deputies with the SWAT team approached Ian and secured him without incident.

As Detectives and SWAT members cleared the residence, they were unable to locate Katie Baunach. Deputies observed numerous things within the residence that led them to believe criminal activity had occurred. Detectives drafted a second search warrant seizing the residence and land as a Homicide investigation.

Detectives spent four days with Crime Scene Investigators combing the residence and five (5) acre parcel. Detectives discovered human remains at the residence/property of Ian Baunach. Detectives are not able to make an identification on the human remains at this time and are in the process of working with DNA testing.

Ian Baunach is being held at the Hendry County Jail with a $325,000.00 bond on un-related charges, possession of a controlled substance. He has had several arrests in the last year including for trespass and domestic battery.

This is still a very sensitive and active investigation and information is limited at this time to maintain the integrity of this investigation.

Detectives are traveling to the State of Indiana and the State of Mississippi to further this investigation.

If you have any information about this murder or if you saw anything suspicious, please contact the Hendry County Sheriff’s Office at 863-674-5600 or you may call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-780-TIPS (8477), where you may be eligible for up to a $3,000.00 cash reward.

UPDATE: A GoFundMe account has been set up by relatives and friends of Katie Baunach.

Murder At Port LaBelle Inn

LABELLE, FL. -- A young male was an apparent murder victim at the Port LaBelle Inn this morning, presumably from a handgun bullet.

On scene were Hendry deputies and investigators, FDLE investigators, and a Glades County Deputy.

The hotel property is split between the Hendry and Glades County boundary line.

At 1 p.m. today a bare chested male was lying face up between two green ServPro trucks.

ServPro of Braun Station is a franchise commercial water clean up company from San Antonio TX in business for about 10 years in Texas.  A green pickup truck with Texas license plates was observed outside the crime scene possibly a ServPro supervisor or franchise representative.

One truck had it's panel door open. Dozens of evidence markers were on the ground in front of the trucks with a crime scene evidence camera aimed at the victim.

Shortly after 1 pm investigators enlarged the crime scene adding tape up to the hotel entrance area. Investigators were apparently still searching for a gun and were on the third floor of the hotel. Evidence bags were seen by neighbors being carried along Oxbow Drive earlier this morning.

Neighbors say a commotion was heard early this morning in the parking lot as hurricane disaster relief crews were loading up trucks. Six ServPro trucks were observed earlier this morning. Four apparently left leaving two, now on each side of the deceased man.

A neighbor across the street from the hotel says there was lots of noise this morning but didn't hear a shot.

The hotel hosts men from St. Matthews House undergoing drug and alcohol rehab. They reside on the third floor, and do chores around the hotel and grounds. The men and staff normally leave the hotel each morning around 8:30 a.m. to attend a program at 1st Baptist Church in LaBelle. This morning, they did not leave the hotel.

UPDATE: It is confirmed that an employee of ServPro of Braun Station, Vincent Keith Harris, 36 year old, described as 6'3" 206 lb. black male, of San Antonio, TX reportedly fled in a ServPro truck and has been arrested. He is charged with 1st Degree Pre-Meditated Murder. Also, confirmed is the white male victim was a ServPro employee and named as  29-year-old Messiah Devon Grier.
