Grandma’s Grove Experiences Rash of Vehicle Burglaries
LABELLE, FL. -- On the morning of Thursday, January 6, Hendry County Sheriff’s Office received approximately 19 calls from residents of Grandma’s Grove reporting their vehicles had been unlawfully entered during the nighttime hours.
Deputies along with Investigators and Crime Scene personnel processed the vehicles for fingerprints and spoke with victims and residents of the park. It was determined that while there was not a large amount of items or cash taken, it was reported that there were stolen credit cards, wallet, $60 in cash and a purse, phone and personal documents. It is worth noting at this time, all of the vehicles entered were left unlocked.
“I cannot stress enough the importance of locking your vehicle at night and removing valuable items,” Hendry County Sheriff Steve Whidden said. “This continues to be a problem. We can only do so much,” Sheriff Whidden continued. “By leaving your vehicles unlocked, valuables in your car, windows down and keys or keyfob in the vehicles, you are inviting the thief to take what belongs to you”.
It is also important to file a police report when this happens, some insurance companies and credit card companies may require a report be filed with local law enforcement. If your driver’s license is stolen you may take a copy of the police report to the Drive’s License Office and they will replace it at no cost.
The loss of items such as checks, credit cards, driver’s licenses and personal documents such as Birth Certificates and Social Security Cards, may be timely to replace and costly.
