Marcus Van Billie Dies In Canal Crash

CLEWISTON, FL. -- Marcus Van Billie, 45 of Clewiston is dead after an alcohol related crash Wednesday morning at 5:22 a.m. in Hendry county.

A 1999 Chevy was northbound on County Road 835 near Rogers Rd. when it suddenly ran off of the roadway onto the east grassy shoulder. Driver Hope Overland, 38 of Hollywood, Fl. over corrected and the vehicle re-entered the roadway of County Road 835.

Overland then lost control as the vehicle began to rotate in a clockwise direction and while sliding sideways in a northeasterly direction, with its left side leading, exited the roadway a second time onto the east grassy shoulder. It overturned on the east grassy shoulder before coming to final rest in a water filled canal and came to final rest partially submerged.

Overland and passenger Michael Dean, 42 of Plantation were transported by Hendry County EMS to Lee Memorial Hospital. Both are in stable condition. Passenger Marcus Van Billie was pronounced deceased at the scene of the crash.

The FHP says the crash was alcohol related. Charges are pending.
