'In God We Trust' - Sheriff's Latest Controversy

LABELLE, FL. -- Hendry Sheriff Steve Whidden's patrol cars are now sporting donated "In God We Trust" decals prominently on the rear end of three dozen patrol cars. The move has resulted in quite a stir in and outside rural Hendry county.

Whidden said, "I am proud to announce that we started rolling out our "In God We Trust" decals. As you can see the Deputies are proud to have them and I'm proud of that!"

The Sheriff said he wants to "spread the message." He reportedly told a local reporter “If you don’t like it, don’t look at it."

Putting in a plug for a local business, he said,  "I want to give a special thank you to Kim Sanders Marroquin from Ragin' Graphics who donated all the decals. I'm proud to serve this awesome community!!"

Hundreds of social media comments are taking sides on the issue including Stefan Hendrichen commenting, "That's legal in America? I was hoping for a religious neutral law enforcement."

But most support the decals as Lynda Liker commented on Facebook,  "This is wonderful Hendry County Sheriff's Office! What a welcome sight in such a messed up world."
