LABELLE, FL. -- Ramiro Gaona, 19 of LaBelle was arrested at 12:45 p.m. on Saturday on charges of DUI, DUI Property Damage, DUI Manslaughter, and Possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
He is alleged to be responsible for the death of passenger Jose Gaona in a crash on February 22. The driver and passenger had been under the influence of alcohol said the FHP crash report.
Ramiro Gaoma was traveling east on the single eastbound lane of Helms Road, a two-lane rural roadway posted for 45 miles per hour when his vehicle reached a slight left bend in the roadway adjacent to the intersection of Camel Drive.
He failed to negotiate the left curve, causing the right side of the vehicle to enter the grass shoulder to the south when he over corrected toward the left causing the vehicle to cross the center lane divider and enter the grass shoulder to the north.
Then he over corrected toward the right, causing the vehicle to begin rotating clockwise and to overturned on the north shoulder, ejecting Jose Gaona Jr., 26 of LaBelle.
The vehicle rolled one and a half times and arrived at final rest on its roof, facing southwest on the north shoulder. EMS attempted to transport passenger Jose Gaona to Lee Memorial Hospital, however he passed away en route.
