$500,000 Sewer Line Repair In Port LaBelle Started This Week

LABELLE, FL. --   The Port LaBelle Utility System has received a grant from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to pay for portions of a new sewer line from the pump station west of the Port LaBelle Inn.

The total cost of the project is $500,680, replacing the original cast iron pipe within portions of the sewer gravity line system. The line serves the Port LaBelle Inn and the condos and apartments in the area located along the Hendry/Glades county line. The portion being replaced now in in Glades county.

PLUS had a study done by National Water Main Cleaning Co. in 2018, inspecting sewer lines throughout Port LaBelle for leaks with a remote camera and high pressure water flushing the cast iron pipes.

The major project began this Monday and is expected to take four months. No residents are expected to be affected by the project other than construction crews and equipment traveling daily on Oxbow Drive traveling to the site in in a fenced cow pasture at the west end of Oxbow Drive.

Several years back, the Port LaBelle Inn reportedly had sewer problems, possibly related to the old cast iron pipe system in this area.

Strickler Bros. Underground Inc. and CIE services, provided by Tetra Tech are the project contractors.

Editor's Note: In researching this project, the Department of Environmental Protection, South District did not respond to a call.

The Glades County Administrator's office shed no light on the project. The Hendry County Administrator's office likewise would not verify they knew anything of the project.

Calls to the Hendry and Glades County Building Departments led to similar results, claiming no knowledge.

A call to the Hendry Engineer's office was not returned. The Port LaBelle Utility System office refused to give out any information whatsoever, and referred us to Emily Hunter, Hendry County Communications Coordinator, who did respond to all our questions by email a day later.
