Two off-duty law enforcement officers reportedly were involved in shooting a naked woman Saturday afternoon in Hernando County, Florida.
Detective Rocky Howard, 31 of the Hernando Sheriff's office and William Mechler, 26 of the Tampa Police Department were at an informal gathering at a private residence in Spring Hill, Florida when they were approached by Inga Marie Swanson, 42, who was naked and acting "a little bit irrational," according to the Sheriff's office.
She was asked to leave and did so. At about 1:15 p.m. she came back and confronted the two law enforcement officers with a weapon, and one or both shot her. Swanson was described as an "irrational, armed and naked" woman.
She was reportedly not part of the gathering or invited to it. There were a "handful" of people at the residence, Hernando Sheriff Al Nienhuis said. He would not reveal what kind of weapon was carried by the woman.
He said the two off-duty officers were "acquaintances."
"She was not in her right mind," the Sheriff said, and believed she was not targeting the two officers. "It was a very unusual situation they were confronted with," he said. Both officers seems to doing well, he said, after talking to them.
It is not yet known who fired the weapon that killed Swanson. Both are on on paid administrative leaves. The Sheriff said his deputy should be back on duty within a few days "if every thing works out ok."
