Literacy Buddies Wanted For Pre-K Kids

LABELLE, FL. -- The Early Learning Coalition of Southwest Florida offers the Literacy Buddy Project for 3 and 4 year old children in VPK (Voluntary Pre-kindergarten) and School Readiness programs in Lee, Collier, Hendry, and Glades County.

School Readiness is subsidized child care based on need. Last year over 1700 children had a literacy buddy. A literacy buddy is a volunteer who agrees to receive letters from a child and then purchases a book for the child and mails it to the child at his child care facility. In the first few weeks of school, children write letters requesting a book on a particular subject from a literacy buddy.

After the child receives a book from their literacy buddy, the child then mails a thank you to the buddy. This exchange takes place three times during the school year.

Applications to become a literacy buddy are available online at elcofswfl.org. Click the Literacy Buddy link and scroll to the bottom. For additional information, please email literacybuddies@elcofswfl.org or call Robin Gretz at 239-935-6186.
