Viva Florida 500 Festival Coming In November

Happy Birthday Florida! 2013 marks the 500th anniversary of when Ponce De Leόn first set foot on this continent, in Florida, on what would become the birthplace of this Nation and the United States of America.

Hendry County is joining the Statewide Celebration of “Viva Florida 500” with the first ever Hendry County Heritage Festival to be held at the LaBelle Rodeo Grounds on Saturday, November 9th, 2013 from 9am until the Rodeo ends.

Ponce De Leόn is credited with bringing cattle, horses and citrus to Florida on his second expedition. The Cracker Cattle and Ponies today can be traced back to that time. Of course he brought the hogs and other maladies too.

Everyone has a story! Perhaps you share a common community, ancestry, faith, industry, or talent! YOU make Hendry County what it is today. We want to hear your story! There will be booth space available for communities, churches, food vendors, and exhibitors, for profit and non-profit groups, musicians, and historians free of charge.

Does your family have a “coat of arms”? Do you have any old photographs to share? Can you weave palm fronds into hats? Can you whittle? Can you make sour orange pie? Play a fiddle? This will be a celebration like none other! The planning committee is looking for more members with great ideas.

A poster contest is now under way to create a design to promote Viva Florida 500- Hendry County Heritage Festival that will be suitable for promotional materials and t-shirts. This is open to all ages. For Contest Rules and applications for booth space, exhibitor registration, etc. send an e-mail request to jpapinaw@hendryfla.net.
