Motorcyclist Dies After Missing Curve

PORT CHARLOTTE, FL. -- Edward A. VanWinkle, 59 of Ocoee died of injuries Saturday night after a crash at 8 p.m. near S.R. 776 east of Charlotte county road 771.

A 2008 Suzuki motorcycle was traveling in the eastbound right lane of S.R. 776 negotiating a curve to the left.  The driver drove into the eastbound bike lane and the cycle's right side struck the raised concrete curb.

It then drove up onto the grassy shoulder and the driver then drove back onto the roadway.  The driver repeated this action twice.  The driver then lost control of as the motorcycle crossed the sidewalk.

The vehicle rotated counter clockwise as it traveled down an embankment, overturned onto its right side and entered a ditch as the driver was ejected.  The driver was transported to Peace River Hospital and then transferred to Lee Memorial where he was pronounced deceased at 11:18 pm Saturday night.

Florida Highway Patrol Investigator Jeffrey Hause and Homicide Investigator Cpl. Michael Michaud indicated is is unknown at this time if alcohol was a factor. VanWinkle was not wearing a helmet.
