19 Taken To Hospital After Bus-Car Crash

CLEWISTON, FL. -- Drivers of a car and a bus along with 17 others were taken to area hospitals this morning after a crash at 6:49 a.m. Monday in a rural road in Hendry County.

A 2010 Nissan was traveling westbound on CR 846 (Immokalee Road) east of County Line Road as a bus was traveling eastbound on CR 846. The auto crossed the center line and the driver of the bus attempted to evasively steer toward the right grass shoulder. As a result, the left front of the Nissan struck the left front of the bus. 

The car rotated and came to rest facing northeast, from within the north grass shoulder. The bus came to final rest from within the south grass shoulder facing southeast. 

The Nissan driver, Joseph Augustus, 46 of Riviera Beach, FL sustained critical injuries and was taken to Lee Memorial Hospital.

The bus had 45 passengers, all farm workers on board at the time of the crash. 12 passengers and the driver, Silverio Ramirez-Santiago, 56 of Immokalee, FL were transported to Hendry Regional Hospital, 

Five additional passengers were transported to Lehigh Regional Hospital. All occupants transported sustained minor injuries. The crash remains under investigation.
