Buildings To Be Illuminated With Purple Lights Tomorrow

In recognition of October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Attorney General Pam Bondi will have the Old Historic Capitol in Tallahassee illuminated in purple on the evening of Wednesday, Oct. 1, beginning at 6:30 p.m.

The Freedom Tower at Miami Dade College in Miami and the SunTrust Financial Centre in Tampa are also joining this effort.

Florida is home to 42 certified domestic violence centers that provide emergency shelter to more than 15,000 survivors and their children.

According to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, 187 individuals died from domestic violence in 2013, accounting for more than 19 percent of all Florida homicides.

“By raising awareness about domestic violence, we can empower victims to seek help,” said Attorney General Pam Bondi. “Victims in need of assistance can call Florida’s toll-free domestic violence hotline at1-800-500-1119.”
