Florida Power & Light Terminates Solar Energy Program

Florida Power & Light, without prior approval from the Florida Public Service Commission and approximately 60 days prior to the planned end of the 5 year solar pilot program, abruptly terminated access to $577,000 in funds used to incentivize solar energy efficiency improvements.

This comes as a shock to both industry participants and customers as other utility companies continue to participate in the program and may do so until allocated funds are exhausted or directed to cease program operation.

FPL customers who had set appointments or had been arranging financing to participate in the solar hot water rebate program were surprised to find out the program was terminated early and without notice.

The early termination of the program and loss of almost $600,000 in rebates represents a loss in real revenue to Florida's economy said a spokesperson for the Florida Solar Energy Industry Association.
