Smiley Hendry, age 84, of Moore Haven, passed away March 12, 2017 at home.
Smiley was born Sep. 12, 1932 in Glades County, FL, to the late Abe and the late Bertie (Whidden) Hendry. Smiley proudly served his country with the United States Army in the Korean Conflict. Smiley worked as a commercial fisherman for many years. Smiley and his wife, Rebecca led the fight to keep Fisheating Creek open to the public, winning the battle on June 27, 1997.
Survivors include his children; Tina Green, and Smiley Hendry, Jr. Four grandchildren; Clarissa and Joel Hendry, Tansy Ewing and Hannah Ertl and seven great grandchildren; Sebastian and Anyah Lopez, Bristal, Jalynn and Audrey Hendry, Ashlyn Ewing and Landon Ertl.
Smiley is preceded in death by her wife of 54 years, Rebecca "Becky: Hendry.
Graveside service being presided by his family was held in the Pavilion of Ortona Cemetery on Friday afternoon at 2 pm, with military rites being conducted by the United States Army.
