On Friday December 4, 2020 at approximately 3:33 pm, Hendry County Sheriff’s Office Deputies responded to a call of “shots fired” in the area of 2100 10th Street in the Harlem Community. As Deputies arrived on scene, they were made aware of a gunshot victim being treated at Hendry Regional Medical Center. The crime scene was cordoned off with Crime Scene Tape and Detectives with the Major Crimes Unit and General Crimes Unit responded along with the Crime Scene Unit.
This area is heavily traveled during this time of the day and furthermore is a main route for school bus travel transporting young children home from school.
Through the investigation detectives determined the victim was traveling northbound on 10th Street with two other adult occupants and one infant occupant, when they were flagged down by a group of five to six young adult males. The victim pulled over in front of the True Vine Church located at 2100 10th Street in the Harlem Community. The front seat passenger exited the vehicle to talk with the group of young males. A fight had ensued between the front seat passenger and the group of young adults. The victim exited the driver seat and attempted to break up the fight. It was at this time Willingham pulled out a handgun and began to fire shots at the victim striking him twice.
It was learned through the investigation that the victim was running towards his vehicle at the time he was being shot at where the vehicle had his infant nephew in the rear seat. It was further learned that a school bus carrying twenty-eight (28) elementary children was stopped due to the incident happening in front of the bus. As the suspect was shooting at the victim, it placed the infant in the rear seat of the vehicle along with the bus driver and the twenty-eight (28) juvenile passengers in direct line of fire.
Willingham is currently being held in the Hendry County Jail with No Bond.
