LABELLE, FL. -- A 1997 Mazda Protege struck a tree in LaBelle, Christmas day. The driver has not been named pending notification of kin.
The Mazda was traveling south on SR 29 (South Main St.) in LaBelle at about 2:24 p.m. approaching the intersection of CR 80 A (Cowboy Way) and for unknown reasons, traveled onto the west shoulder directly in front of the Winn-Dixie supermarket located at 906 S. Main St.
The left front of the vehicle struck a tree, the vehicle then rotated slightly counter-clockwise, and came to final rest facing south. An investigation for alcohol use is underway. The driver was not wearing a seat belt.
The driver was taken to Lehigh Medical Center.
