Christmas Crash Kills Man

Driver Hits Two Trees, One Death And Second Person With Serious Injuries

IMMOKALEE, FL. -- An early morning crash in Collier County, Florida left one dead. It's undetermined which of two occupants of the vehicle was the driver.

A 2003 Dodge Ram pickup truck was traveling south on State Road 29 north of county road 857 on the southbound lane at 4:30 a.m. Tuesday. For unknown reasons, the driver failed to maintain control and traveled (drifted) in a southeasterly direction across the northbound lane and entered the grassy east shoulder.

The driver then over corrected by steering in a southwesterly direction across both lanes of State Road 29 and the truck rotated clockwise. It entered the west shoulder where the truck's left front struck and knocked down a standing tree. 

As a result it overturned while continuing to travel in southwesterly direction. And as it was overturning it's right side subsequently struck a second standing tree, coming to final rest on it's right side faced northwest on the west shoulder, against the second tree. One occupant of was pronounced deceased at the scene and a second occupant was transported to Naples Community Hospital with serious injuries. 

Efforts to identify which occupant is the driver are ongoing. 

The vehicle occupants were Edgar Renata, 19 of Lehigh Acres, FL who was pronounced deceased on scene and occupant two was Ivan Zapata-Cruz, 19, of Immokalee, FL,  who sustained serious injuries and was transported to Naples Community Hospital.

Update: On December 27 the FHP identified the driver as Edgar Renata. A blood alcohol test is pending. His passenger was Ivan Zapata Cruz.
